Sony has claimed that new FPS MAG will be a 'tipping point' for consumers to buy a PS3.
The 256-player online FPS is released later this month on January 29h in the UK, and has been turning a fair few heads - not least for its crazily huge multiplayer.
Sony confirmed the UK release date this morning, as reported by CVG. Mainland Europe will get the game two days earlier on January 27th, and it will hit Australia and New Zealand on January 28th.
"MAG is a very important IP for us and definitely a key exclusive for PS3," SCEE UK product manager Phil Lynch told MCV magazine this week. "MAG is a real statement of intent for us to engage fans of FPS games.
"With the successful Resistance along with Killzone 2 and now MAG, we feel we are a viable choice for gamers looking to get that much more from their console. MAG will definitely be one of the many tipping points for those who haven't got a PS3 to get one this January.
Lynch added: "Our sales expectations for MAG are high. Thanks to the massive success of titles like Modern Warfare, Killzone 2 and Resistance, FPS as a genre has become much more accessible to everyone.
"Allied to this, I think MAG's unique selling points of unparalleled scale and groundbreaking player command structure will really make it stand out against the competition."
I already have a PS3 and this doesn't interest me in the slightest. Impressive numbers and the game probably will be good, but I don't like online play so this really isn't for me.

Agent will potentially make me buy a PS3, not another "Me too!" shooter that just ups the number of people playing and therefore the number of tossers you're likely to meet online...

I don't think this game will shift PS3's like GT5 will, GT5 is the reason I bought my PS3. My PS3 supports the latest and greatest peripherals (G25/27) and it continues to be the center of my room, Blu ray and the like. This is why I really have it, it has other uses which make it perfect for what I do.
If it does sell well, then I'll buy it. If not then no chance. I was on the closed beta a few months ago and the gameplay was superb, but the long waits for players to fill a match put me off a bit. However that problem will go if enough people buy it. Maybe I'll wait a bit & see how well it does first.

Why does everyone complain about the time it takes to get into a match?
I was in the open beta and although i only played around 10-15 matches each time i got through in a matter of seconds. Quicker than COD WAW or Killzone 2. Now i could of just been lucky but it seems unlikely as the games were almost full of players and it was consistant.
I think those complaining either only played the closed beta (with far fewer players) or never played at all.
Yeah, I must admit the thought of me getting shot by one of the other 255 players as soon as I spawn in and take a step forward really appeals to me. Think I'll pass on this one and wait for Avp/Bioshock 2.
This isn't on the same level as god of war 3 or Modnation racers (hopefully). It might be quite a good game...but as a game temptation for non ps3 owners to finally dive in for console+game...NOWAY.

Might be awesome or it might be a nightmare of too much too fast too often. I thought the PS3 was going to make me get a "second job" in order to afford one? Hmm I haven't done that either.
I am a HUGE PS3 fanboy and will jump on anything better than the 360 and if the 360 comes out with summin better I come out with lame arguments why lol. But this doesn't look at all that interesting to me, we have so many great FPS' like SONY said but I don't think another one is gonna help sell a PS3, if anything we need less.
This game seems more suited for the 360 anyway, imo a console seller is a much loved series, like Final Fantasy or Tekken and we lost both of them to the 360. I think SONY is in a dream world if they think MAG is gonna shift a ton of consoles.
Still less than Microsoft who thinks "Natal" is the equivalent of releasing a new console...That's gonna ruin great games, you mark my words. It will just get fazed out eventually.
I can understand where Sony are coming from, having seen the popularity of the MW franchise. FPS fans seeking another challenge would be in their element collecting all the ranks and trophies in MAG.
However, I am not totally convinced that MAG will be a sure-fire hit because it is a tough game, that takes no prisoners.
I'll be getting it because I enjoyed the beta. And I know that a few of my PS3 owning buddies will be getting it too, so that's me covered.
I'm looking forward to it. Especially as I found MW2 multiplayer a bit same-old.
The problem with MW2 for me is that it takes just a few trys to become good at the game, thanks to the auto-aim. It's a casual shooter, whereas MAG is pretty hardcore - in the same vein as Socom.
I'm the same with music, in that I'd prefer to listen to Temper Trap, rather than Girls Aloud.
For me Uncharted 2 has to be a good reason to buy a PS3. Just finished it last night and thought it was awesome. Out of the three consoles I hadn't really used my PS3 that much until I got this. Not sure about M.A.G but there are plenty of other good games coming out for PS3 this year that could be a reason to buy one.

Oh but you didn’t include your ‘center of the room’ love rant to give my comment context, boo hoo hoo, as otherwise it would have made sense that you love it because of this, and this, and this, and this and this etcetera, etcetera. I like both! 'Biology' is a brilliant pop song inasmuch as 'Love Lost' is. Though I'm more partial to a bit of Frightened Rabbit at the moment, 'Floating In The Forth' is a massive choon and then some.
I found it quite fun. Not sure it would be a game to convince me (if I didnt have one already) the beta is good takes no longer than 1 minute to get a game (not sure where the 30 minute BS came from) I just dont like online fps too much least its not an arcade like mw2 though socom and mag are thinking mans games. if people like them kinda games they will buy it.

Respawns with 20 secs delay sucks though and im guessing it may turn into a snipers paradise. Heres a quick story Was defending objective C when a whole squad came parachuting in about half a click up the road. Time to get in position with my rifle. Well hidden,up high i peer down my scope down the road and see not 1 but 2 squads (about 16 people) coming straight down the road with another squad being droped in behind. Time to break out the launcher and call for help. Launch 2 shells into the group of oncoming squadies managing to take at least 10 and poped 3 more with my rifle while they were trying to regain their bearings, before 1 of their snipers pegged me.
Would be better if people worked together like your supposed to. Think it supposed to break down like this. You get put into a squad of 8 players,the highest ranking player in the squad becomes the squad leader and issues orders to the rest of the squad which they follow to gain XP. There are 4 squads in a platoon. Alpha,Bravo,Chalie and Delta sauads(32 players). I believe the highest ranking player of the Platoon can become platoon commander and issues orders to the squad leaders to follow, who inturn pass the orders down to the squadies he thinks best for the mission. And lastly theres 4 platoons to a company (128 players) Im not too sure about how orders are issued at the company level,im assuming the same as previous levels but i think it will be a case of 1 war with 4 platoons fighting all over a virtual continent, so effectively you will have 1 platoon covering 1 area/map so that means there will only ever be 64 players fighting in your area or map at a time.
Really think this game could spawn a explosion of disaplined clans if done right.
1) MAG games do not take 30 minutes to get going. The beta took no more than 5 to start. Which is longer than MW2, but then again it didn't drop out again, dump you back into a new lobby, change host, spend ages 'sending blocks' only for it to be laggy as hell... and dump you back to the main menu again (waiting for party leader!) so is often a smoother experience.
2) Its not that great. Its interesting and I suspect that the huge games could be fun (I only played the 64 player versions in the beta. Never hit Level 10), but you know what it reminded me of - a mod for the original halflife I used to play called Firearms. Graphics weren't much better, some fundamental flaws in level design (the return of spawn camping). Weapons are limited, certainly compared to MW2, and don't feel as solid. I can't help but feel that all the top guys are going to be camprers (sorry, snipers) who are going to simply pick off anyone who isn't from a mile away.
Really dont get why anyones comparing it to MW2, it plays more like a Battlefield game in almost every aspect.
I tried the open beta after quite a slow start, think it started over an hour after they said it would be up and ready, my impression was i wasnt impressed, i'd rather wait for BFBC2 i had more fun in that beta than MAG's.
And to say this game will shift consoles is just retarded, like someone else mentioned, well known brands shift consoles like Halo and GoW and FF.

Not really, Darksiders looks/plays/is awesome- and that's the polar opposite of washed and pastely! I like games to have a distinctive style, but I think that just comes with being an artist. I am a bit fussy i must admit.
And if you think Halo is bland you should try Killzone 2... wait... I'm sure we've been here before.
