Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Has Konami made a Messi? We go hands-on...
Pro Evo has been in a state of flux these past three seasons. And when we say 'flux', we mean it's been arrogantly wallowing in its past glories, slipping ever further into disrepair while FIFA sneaks up behind it and throat-punches it.

Not that legendary producer Seabass Takatsuka seems to be too worried. After all, we've all been weaned on a diet of PES for who knows how long, snapping up each fresh instalment with zombie-like compliance. Except (and especially as far as some PS3 owners were concerned) last term's scrappy iteration was the straw that tore Fernando Torres' hamstring... so to speak. Indeed, Pro Evo 2008 echoed many of the worries we've been voicing in general about many 'next gen' Japanese games; that is, they're not so much pushing gameplay boundaries as simply whacking a tin of pretty paint all over the screen and yodelling 'ta da!'.

Alas, and it positively hurts us to tell you this, when it comes to the crunch PES 2009 - far from being a proper next gen kickabout - is largely same old, same old. Much like this season's FIFA, while it's still a great game it's also a massive disappointment. The engine is the same, some of the old flaws have been ironed out (they've been replaced with new ones, mind), the AI is still as occasionally daft as ever (despite all those promises) and it all feels... utterly anti-climactic. Much like watching Aussie could-have-been Harry Kewell, you just know the talent is there, if only he could be arsed showing it. It's just so frustrating.

On the field, things pretty much look the same as ever. It still doesn't match up to its EA rival in the prettiness stakes, but a few new animations certainly bump the level of fluidity up a notch. Gameplay is what you're all dying to know about though, and it's in this area where PES 2009 is... well, intriguing, at least.

First of all, the ball feels slightly heavier, making passing crisper and speedier than ever - though bear in mind your players have a fraction of a second longer to get the ball under control than before, meaning you'll initially be robbed of possession all the time. Secondly, shooting is nowhere near as arcadey as last year, meaning balance, preferred foot and the proximity of defenders has wreaked havoc on your ability to bang in 25-yard screamers. Finally, the lofted through-pass is finally a deadly weapon in the right hands, which leads to some breathtaking breakaways.

Summing up, we'd say this: after an hour you'll be swearing your head off, convinced Konami have actually taken a step backwards gameplay wise. Our advice: go and get some fresh air, come back and play it again - it'll win you over in the end.

Crucially though, these 'improvements' simply aren't enough to guarantee a 90%-plus score. Not any more. Take heed Konami: all this laurel resting is finally beginning to catch up with you...

It's tricky. On one foot, PES is a crushing disappointment, yet another tentative toe in the next gen waters that favours consolidation over innovation. On the other, it's still the best kickabout you'll find anywhere outside, well, real life. Whether it's doing anywhere near enough to convince you to buy yet another update masquerading as a full game is one for XBW's Dubious Footy Games Panel to decide next month. But in the meantime we'll keep on taking to the field every lunchtime. Er, just to be sure.

Well from the demo I think its quite a big improvement.

I bought 6 on 360 & it was awful compared to the PS2 version, the same with 2008. The PS2 verions of these just played faster & more fluid than the current gen counter parts.

But the demo for this just felt right. Its a major step forward IMO. The faster passes & extra weight seem like small changes but they add significantly to the gameplay. Same with the shooting, its much more controlable & precise than before. The control over the players feels loads better too & the new first touch animations & dribbling with skilled players adds extra control & is handled brilliantly.

I think I may finaly pick the current gen version over the PS2 one this time. Got nothing but good vibes from the demo.

christ the mag that this article came from was out over a week ago.
after playing the demo of PES i'm glad i've purchased fifa this year. being a old die-hard PES fan the games recent slump since moving to this gens machines has just ruined the game for me, last years version being the worst offender. the online components were better in the original xbox version and the PS3 one last year was a jittery mess. i cannot stress how much fifa has improved this year with solid shooting and all round better play. it feels like a real game of football. to any other diehard PES fans, don't just do the usual and say its fifa and it'll be the same old shite because thats what konami have been doing for the last few years. yes i know that they've moved the 360 spin and drag back onto the d-pad and the be a legend mode is in it now but give fifa a good try and you'll never look back. that is unless konami do something really special and pull they're finger out there arses. but going by the demo that doesn't look likely.

But isnt the new FIFA getting praise because it now plays like PES?

So why not stick with PES as its still improved (if only slightly in some peoples opinion) & still plays better than FIFA?

It seems PES is getting marked down because it hasnt changed much, but just because FIFA now plays like it - so is basicaly the same - FIFA now gets praised.

I have been a PES fan ever since the first edition and hadn't bought a Fifa game since 2003. I took a bit of a gamble with Fifa 08 and would say that I played that more than PES2008 - especially online.

This year, with Fifa 09 really impressing me, I don't intend to pick up PES until it drops down in price. It hasn't appeared to change for a while so I don't feel like I should purchase at full price when they've hardly made any improvements.

I've played the demo a few times now and cannot say that I'm impressed. The sound effects annoy me just as much as the commentary now, which is saying something.

Too right mfnick! and FIFA is still no where near as solid to play.
Posted by nologo
imo, FIFA 09 is was such a huge disappointment...ppl barked on about how insanely good it is!blah blah blah..and the fact of the matter..its same old same old (again)..a slightly polished turd attempting to be PES. pes 09 feels fantastic.. (although god only knows why on earth they wud change the skill controls?) it reminds me of the glory days of pes on ps2! and finally they have fixed the replays!wh00t!
this preview is total rubbish...basically saying fifa is now better because its like pes?no...fifa still sucks and modelling still feels like they dressed apes in 3D motion capture suitsand said "Chase that ball".

However, i'm tempted to delay purchasing pes09...in favour for winning eleven 09 (version 2+)..as i'm sure the old pes fans know..the japanese release several versions of the same game but with tweaks etc..and i often find NSTC games are better..
EDIT: plus i prefer japanese commentary for some strange reason (not that i understand it like lol)..but when playing the game over and over again..i hate hearing english commentary team repeat them same crap lol

I tried to like the demo, but as much as i played it i thought something was missing, I will still be buying it, but only after i find out if the online isn't gimped, because lets face it, last years was a write off.

I have plumped for a ps3 copy of Fifa 09 and find it a pretty decent kick around, the online works, it looks decent, and as people have said it plays like pro evo. So what we have is the offspring of the best looking football game out there and the best football game (IMO - not everyone's). It's certainly come on leaps and bounds.

I will hold off my final verdict untill i have played the full Pro Evo 2009, i am hoping that the demo was an old build with the sounds just tagged on to send it out, rather than being fully representative.

I was hoping Pro Evo 2009 would be the built from the ground up game us pro evo fans wanted, but from what the demo showed its everything but.

it plays like PES without the faults. through balls actually go where you want them, unlike PES and you can pass a ball to the player next to you. if you tried that in pES you'd end up losing the ball. plus the pitch in fifa is bigger and you seem to have a bit more space to do something with the ball.
as i said i've been playing PES since the ISS days and every year the games had the same faults and i cannot play more than 2 games of it a night or i'd end up smashing something up. the game just infuriates me now. it may well just be that fifa seems new to me but i cannot remember ever playing over 30 games of PES in one weekend which i managed online in fifa over that weekend past. 4 or 6 would have been my limit before i'd get pissed off with passes not going where i wanted them in PES. plus the online aspect of fifa just runs like a dream, something that konami cannot seem to get right. if they haven't sorted that the legends online mode will just fall flat on its face. fifa runs pretty smooth playing with 10 a side. in the past few years PES has struggled to get a decent 1 v 1 game going.

My solution is to buy something else altogether! I'm totally fed up of footy games now to be perfectly honest. Seriously though, i've been playing footy games on console since Sensible Soccer on the Amiga many moons ago.
The evolution of the great game has failed to evolve in line with the technology available today.
When you see how little these games improve year on year you can surely see my point.
I'm giving up on video game footy until such time as a game appears that totally captures the true spirit and feel of the real game, which will probably never happen!!
Posted by mfnick
Exactly my point. It doesnt make any sense. They say FIFA now plays like PES so its good. But PES plays like a slightly improved version of PES but its bad.

Just because its under a different name they are recommending it more. Im all for boycotting these yearly updated games, especailay ones like PES that are changing so little. But id still rather buy PES of FIFA this time because i'd prefer to play the better game rather than the one thats a surprise because its actualy good for a change.

I'm with mfnick on this one. the demo fells much better than last years effort. i'll be buying this on release for the 360 (prays it's not sh!t online)
Posted by mfnick
To quote the article though:

Also the added weight & changes to passes means you can make those passes to the player next to you. Thats these faults sorted. I spotted that myself from the demo.

Admitadely the sound is shite! But thats not the area im interested in.

With your last point, if online is of major importance than FIFA may be better. We dont know yet. But I mostly play this with my mates in the same room 2vs2 so thats not a problem for me. Sure online would be a nice bonus but im not particularly bothered. Especialy seeing as though most of my mates cant afford broadband or to take the 360 online. & if they can, they arent interested in doing it anyway.
Posted by ensabahnur
To quote the article though:
i used to love playing PES6 2 v 2 online with me and my mate in one house and my other mates about 30 miles away. but last year it was hard enough trying a 2 v 2 game in the same house(PS3 version). don't get me wrong, i'd love PES to be good this year, i've been playing it for years. but then its because i've been playing it for years that the last few versions have pissed me off.
as for the through ball it was the grounded one i was talking about. i've always been able to use the lofted one but trying to send one along the ground has always been like its pre-determined where its going, and its usually not towards where you want it.

I actually cant believe this guy, do you play football ever m8, like real life football?!
Im sorry but i've owned both and i bought fifa this year for the specific reason that in pro ev they run like forest ****ing gump. The ball still feels locked to each player which results in what looks nothing like football, fifa however with the physics stuff implemented looks like football, balls bounce off players, players stumble when tackled and it isnt just a canned animation. I believe that this preview is utter bollocks, how can pro ev be the best footballing game when its the easiest game of football ever!, seriously in the 4 minute demo i won 7-0 against the comp on the highest difficulty setting WTF!. In short what im trying to say is that pro ev is for people who dont play football in real life and want to feel like they could be quite good, fifa is for people who play football a lot (4 times a week) and know how the game works and how to create good build up play, end of!
Posted by davidc
..i think the main issue is that at least fifa seems to improve each year , graphically and gameplay wise...where pes seems to be stuck in a time warp.....

personally i like both but just wish pes had the penache of fifa....
Posted by nologo
u must play a different game..as pes is famous for its "realistic" scores instead of fifa's 27-13 scores. in a sense your true...fifa is for the ppl who buy games because they have the full license and are brain dead jocks..while real gamers prefer PES. due to having a real life and not living on the DOLE..i have a couple of hours commute to work each day, so don't have time to play 4 times a week. but yes, fifa's motion capture look like apes who have sh*t their shorts.
Posted by ensabahnur
ah fifa vs PES. its the last bastion of games fanboys.
Posted by nologo
not really for me mate..i really did want to like fifa cos the last pes was so bad...but fifa never changes..the same old same old..which is exactly the same for pes dont get me wrong..but i prefer that same old to fifa's same old.
Posted by ensabahnur
eh have you even played a fifa game recently. stick fifa 06 and fifa 09 next to each other and you've got 2 different looking and playing games. ok the same can't be said about PES but fifa has changed over the past few years. it may not be to your tastes but at least they're trying.
Posted by Zidano
Although Fifa plays a little more like PES, it still maintains what was great about the past Fifa games. In my opinion they are very close to striking the perfect balance, and if they iron out the remaining kinks, Fifa 2010 will be immense.

I'm forever hoping that PES will pull something out of the bag that looks and feels like a current gen offering, but Konami now appear to be riding on the game's success, just like Fifa has done in the past.

I can never understand why everyone argues over which is better than the other.

For once we actually have two top class footie games - surely this is something we should be celebrating?! Instead people just prefer to 'support' their favourite game rather than just play them.

The PES demo is excellent and to be honest ive always preffered PES to FIFA, but FIFA 09 is absolutley brilliant. Its the biggest football game Ive ever played.

I wouldnt trust this 'preview' in any way to be honest. It seems they have already made their mind up about the game and have clearly not even played all of the modes yet. They talk about how good the lofted through ball is but I found that this was the one thing wrong with the demo. EVERYTIME I used it my striker went through and scored. Thats not good. It could be a total gamebreaker, but I'll reserve judgement on that for when I play the full game.

Also, I think this was the same mag that reviewed UEFA Euro 2008 and gave it a really low score saying it was just 'FIFA 08 with the Euro license.' This clearly showed me they hadnt played the game as it is much, much better than FIFA 08 and is pretty much the same in gameplay terms as FIFA 09.

I've already bought FIFA on Xbox for the online, and im defo gonna get Pro Evo for PS3. not just for the pad but also the trophies, and the inevitible squad update file you'll be able to get from the internet. Apparently you can edit crowd chants and everything, so it should be awesome.

For the past 3 years fifa have pushed the limits to make a better game that tries to contend with PES. Now fifa 09 is out we can clearly see its on the verge of rivaling PES. The reason people want fifa like pes is a compliment to konami itself. However, while fifa and ea have worked hard and made improvements, pes has rested on its laurels. So for arguments sake, lets just say konami and pes worked hard like fifa to make improvements. We can certainly say that fifa would still be 3 years behind. So while fifa customers have payed money for better gameplay , konami and pes gamers have payed money for no improvements (apart from animations and a "heavy ball") lol..KONAMI HAVE ONLY THEMSELVES TO BLAME!!!

I agree.

I really enjoyed the PES '09 demo. I actually managed to get shots on target from beyond the 25 yard box  Whenever I tried to shoot from long range in the two previous PES's, the ball would become an entity all on its own and go where it wanted - and no, it wasn't because I was sh*t or don't know how to play PES.

The passing felt better. The ball, which has always been pretty good anyway, felt lovely and smooth. The game in general had an overall smoothness to it aswell.

Having played both demo's i think PES is a far superior game to Fifa. Its much improved over last year and is still a joy to play. Anyone who prefers PES over Fifa will agree that Fifa just doesnt feel right. It feels too cumbersome and devoid of rhythm. Im not a big fan of Fifa but I give it a bash every year to see what all the fuss is about and it disappoints all the time. Every year it gets "more like PES" But it never plays as good as pro evo. PES 2008 was a real let down bbut this year it seems to get it right. Thank God!

I aint played FIFA for a few years till now but it seems to me as if they have changed places. Back in the Pes4 day when it was going for realism with the 1-0 games to now when it is so easy to score and FIFA the other way round, gone from 6-6 draws to being happy to scape a 1-0 win. (I always play football games on the hardest setting) PES just seems to be to much of a arcade style game even Seabass himself said last year that the game was not good enougth and needed major work so why does this years feel like the same game with minor tweeks, mainly to the speed of the game, where fifa feels like they are making big strides (can't belive I just said that about a ea game). Get it sorted Konami, give the next gen (or current gen) a proper pes and not one still based on the engine forn the snes days.
Posted by KesMonkey
I buy PES every year, for me it's simply the slicker of the two games. I've always thought Fifa feels 'clunkier' - more robotic. However, every year I try Fifa to see if it finally rivals PES in the gameplay department.
I like how this years Fifa plays (because it's more like PES than ever), but I really hate how the camera works. Every time the ball changes direction, there is a noticeable jerk in the camera movement that really starts to grate after just a few minutes play. It will be PES for me again this year. I just hope they have sorted out the netcode.

I thought wii boy had been banned. shame.

having played both fifa and pes demos, i will be getting pes.
Personally the fifa demo did my head in, but i can see that if I really gave it a chance i might like it. but then probally remember its chealsea next for my master league team and not look at fifa for about 6 months, just like i did with 08.
Im sorry i just prefre pes. simple as.

I think this year, FIFA has finally managed to beat PES.

PES 2008 was a lazy, shoddy, half assed game more reminiscant of the 'This is Football' series than its former glory. FIFA on the other hand, while slow, was complete- minus a training mode which the new one also still hasn't got.

I was so much hoping that they'd pull out all the stops for PES2009, but I guess I was wrong.
Posted by Eclipse Dj
I own a Wii and 360 so am not a fanboy when it comes to games consoles. To say that all other versions other than Wii are obsolete is crazy!

Yes the pointer controls on Wii PES were highly praised, but is not without it's faults and is by no means perfect.

There is no way you can physically control ALL 11 players on the pitch at once. You still only control one with the ball and point and move other players, one at a time.
Posted by timmytom1
the reason FIFA has been getting praise for this approach is because it is becoming pro with more depth league wise i have enjoyed PES since the 3rd one but since moving to the current gen Tatsuka has done practically nothing with the game.although i have to admit that 09 is noway near as good as the hype suggested but then again is aything? as for pro .well there is usually a big bug clearout between demo and release so it will be better but unless they sort the online and the frankly sadistic master league out i ain`t buying
Posted by Skullet
Been playing Pro Evo since the ISS days, but I wont be buying PES 2009. For me I can't help feeling it could have been released as a patch for last years lacklustre effort, and certainly isn't worth the full price of a game.
