Perfect Dark release weeks away?

Work complete, 1200 Points, release soon, says rumour
A juicy rumour has hit the web claiming that Rare's long-awaited Perfect Dark remake for Xbox Live Arcade is only weeks away.

According to an unnamed Xbox Live marketing representative, "The work is pretty much finished... as far as I'm aware, the conversion has been complete for some time now," reports Electronic Theater.

"We're expecting a release very soon, there's been talk that the game would launch in either the last week of January or beginning of February."

The unnamed rep continued, "Logic would suggest that it's safe to assume that would probably be the case, though of course with such a high profile title all parties involved would like to ensure the release doesn't clash with any other big games," and then added it's "1200 [Microsoft Points]. I thought that would have been obvious by now." Sounds like someone got out on the wrong side of the bed.

As for the official line, well, there isn't one. It's all just guesswork until Rare or Microsoft comes clean. Hopefully that will be soon.

This means Perfect Dark, not Perfect Dark Zero right?
harky on 13 Jan '10
That pic does not look like it's from "Perfect Dark Zero", which I incidentally put down an hour or two ago in a fit of rage yet again over some of the atrociously stupid game mechanics. Example: You only get new weaponry for your in-between mission armory if you pick them up during the previous mission and hold on to them until the mission is completed. The catch being that you have limited weapon slots and thus you can actually end up missing out on a powerful weapon which only appears right at the end of one mission which ends as soon as you kill the last bad guy wielding that weapon. Guess what? No new weapon for you unless you pick it up from one of the other last bad guys before killing the very last one (while being shot at by the other bad guys with a weapon that makes mince meat out of your health). Ta-daa! Gaming idiocy at its finest! I'm so glad I only paid 5 quid for a second hand copy in excellent condition.

1200 MS points for the this other "Perfect Dark" game is probably too much even if it is the original game which many claim is better than "Perfect Dark Zero". Rehashed games, no matter how extensive the digital face lift has been, are still rehashed games and do not qualify for premium pricing, IMO.

Yup CVG have it massively wrong. It's Perfect Dark a remake of the N64 game that we are awaiting the release of.

To The_KFD_Case :

How old are you? I would wager you are a younger gamer, and not actually old enough to have played Perfect Dark on the N64. Until you do, do not judge a game by its sequel (which Perfect Dark Zero effectively was).

1200 MS Points for what was one of the finest multiplayer experiences (and one of the best co-op FPS games) in gaming history is a bargain.

Play it before you judge it.

However I will agree with you entirely on your summation of the game mechanics of Perfect Dark Zero. It was truly terrible.

Change that title right now! Evil or Very Mad
YCshinobi on 13 Jan '10
i've said it before i didn't mind zero but only on dark agent difficulty: it came alive then.

tbh though, even the biggest pdz fan would have to admit the story mode was average at best. online co op was quite fun though.

it's also one of the few games this gen with true real time lighting. shoot the lights out and make your own shadows,it worked in the original and still holds true in pdz.

the multiplayer however is my favourite on 360. 32 player, designed by the guy who did the original doesn't sound too bad to me: 32 player infection on urban is as good as it gets for me.

when facility and temple turned up as free dlc i was more than happy with the game.

still, there's something about returning to the complex etc... on the original that is impossible to resist. it was never as good as the eye, comedy aliens and a pointless bossfight on the skedar (i mean, really!?) world undermined the quality of levels like the g5 building etc...

multiplayer however is godlike. one of my favourites ever. up there with super mario kart and snes sf2turbo.

we'd much rather have a new game rare! pd and pdz played both, but was not even slightly impressed, i'd say the worst games rare have made, kbfd probably the best

I know a lot of people seem to like ragging on Perfect Dark Zero, but when I got my 360 I impressed enough with it to enjoy it a fair bit.

Playing it now for the first time, most will be quick to dismiss it. It plays like a last gen title and the graphics are hit and miss in quality.

At the time of the launch of the game it was a decent shooter.
bazzatuk on 13 Jan '10
I think this might be a titling mistake, as for why anyone would think Perfect Dark Zero(the cartoony game) is worth 1200MS points is beyond me. The Original PD was an improvement on it's older sibling GoldenEye. This game had it all, hectic multiplayer, fast and furious, incredible weaponry, bots, best multiplayer maps from GoldenEye, weapons with secondary functions. Who didn't like the Super Dragon? I'm going to be looking for this jaunt back into the 90's. All Hail Rare, of old that is. Not these new fangled guys who can't make a decent game anymore.

You are ever so wrong about your guess as to my age...Unless you consider anyone born during the year the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan "a young gamer".

If you go back to what I typed previously, you will see that I am not criticizing the game play of "Perfect Dark". I am criticizing the price tag for a game that is nothing more than an update regardless of how good the original title may have been in your and others' opinion. It's a cheap cash-in move on the part of the companies involved, and while you may be a-okay with that, I personally prefer to pay the higher fees for new games that push the envelope and not yesterday's re-heated leftovers no matter how tasty it was back in its heyday.

That's just it: Part of me genuinely likes "Dark Project Zero" (the musical score is fantastic, IMO) but every few hours something infuriating crops up in the game and it goes pear shaped. Guess it may be best just to enjoy the parts that appeal to one and get through it as quickly as possible - a bit of a shame as I prefer to savor a game rather than grind through it like one would with a chore.
The_KFD_Case on 14 Jan '10
Perfect Dark was one of many highlights of the first 3d gen although I can understand the dislike of the price point, isn't that price point equivalent to £17 which some games of today can be bought for. I'm saying this mind you unaware if they've added anything new apart from a visual update if new content has been added like with Banjo Tooie I may not mind.

Apart from the visual update (which I have somewhat mixed feelings about though mostly negative due to the re-skinning), there's also not going to be any frame rate issues Very Happy online multiplayer Very Happy and then the expected XBLA extras of achievements/leaderboards and the like Smile

Just a shame it won't utilize the camera to put your mug in the game like the original was supposed to Sad

If the MS points converter is to believed, then 1200 MS points only amounts to 10.20 GBP. That's not so bad in retrospect, yet as you point out there are newer games which may offer more, and certainly more up-to-date gaming tech. For example: I've managed to pick up "Demigod" for 15.00 Euros during a sale in a retail store - that's 13.38 GBP. Also, on Amazon.co.uk you can currently pre-order the "Alien vs. Predator" PC version (the new upcoming one) for 17.99 GBP.

While that is almost 80% more in cost than this updated "Perfect Dark" game, it will most certainly look better and I'm guessing it will offer a superior multiplayer experince with the three factions of Space Marines, Aliens and the Predator to choose from. That particular game's quality remains to be seen, but it too is arguably a re-take on an old title (the original is from 1999) yet it has had more than a make-over; it's been built from the ground up.

It would be if they are handling the update, but they aren't.

Yeah, I bet if Rare we-re doing the re-make it the re-skinning wouldn't look so damn bad it does Mad that or they wouldn't of done it at all (and just left it high-def) which personally I would of been happier about...
