Yamauchi "angry" after GT releases

"A game release is not a very happy time for me," says Gran Turismo creator
Polyphony perfectionist and Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi says he usually gets pretty pissed off after releasing Gran Turismo games. And not because it often takes them so damn long to get them out the door.

"I am usually pretty frustrated when a version comes out," said Yamauchi when asked why he continues to make one GT game after another. "Right after the release, I think we should have done this or should have done that. A game release is not a very happy time for me. When a new title comes out, I look to the next one to fix it," he explains.

"I'm usually pretty angry after the release of the title," he concludes in his interview with Venturebeat. And we're usually pretty angry before the release of a title, because you guys love to delay them all.

Yamauchi also says GT5 uses roughly 80 percent of the PS3's horsepower. Check out the rest of the interview through the link.

mookistar on 14 Jan '10

IAN-BUFFTON on 14 Jan '10
Right after the release, I think we should have done this...

Should have done it sooner?

...or should have done that

Should have done it sooner?

It may very well be that you get better, more predictable performance from having that spare headroom rather than maxing it out.

It's a mental disease, similar to what Michael Jackson had. Only his problem was with plastic surgery, not car games.

Never happy, always striving for perfection but destroying your life trying to reach it. And in the end, you never get it and end up a sad lonely crazy man.
Nick33 on 14 Jan '10
Well he's gta release it eventually for f sake Rolling Eyes.

Only 80% of the power? s**t after releasing the game when the consoles been replaced you could of at least pushed it to use 100%............ Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

Lol what?

Are you a twonk?

Most people have the decency to admit that they could have done better. I doubt he is destroying his life by striving for perfection. And as if you are dismissing him for admitting fault's in his products.

Tis' the funniest stuff in the world, people mad as hell that the game isn't released yet. I say kick back and relax, lots of games to buy or rent in the mean time, seriously all the p**sing and moaning is only going to send your pressure up. Have a drink and just enjoy your other games and movies and girlfriends and living life. I swear some folk rant like this is the one thing in life they were waiting for. I digress. 80% of PS3's power, those coders are good, hope they can squeeze 90% out of it for the next one. As long as this one plays well, i don't care if they squeezed blood out of a PS3 as long as my game runs and is fun.

Well written and a wise insight. The pursuit of perfection, or just about anything else for that matter, taken to the extreme and at the cost of all else is a good recipe for some of those tragic yet avoidable tales one comes across from time to time.

Whether this chap suffers from quite so concentrated a state of being is up for debate.
The_KFD_Case on 15 Jan '10
Sure KFD, you keep telling yourself that, in the meantime I'll get to play the game and you can only sit looking out the window dreaming of better things some day, maybe, on Xbox 360 and PC (graphics and gameplay).

Excuses, excuses. Yeah, yeah. Rolling Eyes

The difference being that this generation you have online functionality integrated into everything, so if there's something you're not happy with you can patch it easily.

So this game release should be a time of introspection and then updating. No excuse.

I must disagree there. This "patching" culture a lot of devs seem to adhere to these days is downright shameful. A number of times I've recieved a game on it's release date only to find there's an update awaiting me when I put the disc in.

Having the ability to do mass-patching post-release is no excuse for letting a sloppy release (ahem) out the door.
