Modern Warfare 2 exclusive DLC deal explained

"That's a big reason you'd want to buy an Xbox 360 instead of another console," says Aaron Greenberg.
Last week Microsoft reconfirmed it had the exclusive on the first two Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 download packs due this spring. Major Nelson said, "This spring, the first Modern Warfare 2 content packs will be available exclusively first on Xbox Live." Now Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has explained why.

"I think about it like a sports team, when you sign a star athlete for your team... when you sign that free agent, I think it makes your team better. At the end of the day, we want to turn as many people as possible into Xbox 360 fans," he said at CES.

"And then to say, on top of that, to take the biggest game of last year, and be the exclusive place you can get that downloadable content first, I think that's a big deal.

"That's a big reason you'd want to buy an Xbox 360 instead of another console. So we think from a business standpoint that's part of the reason more people are buying the Xbox 360, more people are on Xbox Live, it's part of the reason more people are buying Modern Warfare 2-more than two to one our box vs. the PS3."

If you own a PS3 and 360, which version of MW2 did you plump for and why? Bet it's got more to do with multiplayer than DLC?

I bought it on PS3 and am probably one of the few people who couldn't give a rats bottom about multiplayer. Never taken it online and I don't really intend to. I bought it because it was supposed to be a great game. Now while some will argue that it is and that multiplayer is the best bit I still think that a game should be judged on all aspects. Take Uncharted 2 (I know PS3 but bear with me), that has a brilliant single player campaign, maybe the best in recent years, but it also has a very solid online aspect to it. I've even taken it online to try it. Uncharted 2 got 9s and 10s and rightly so, but then so did MW2. I honestly couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
Anyway back to the DLC problem. It's just MS being MS. Popular game buy it out. Did it with GTA IV and now MW2. It's a pain in the bottom for us PS3 owners, but at least this isn't permanently exclusive. Then again I didn't care much for either game (and that's not because of exclusivity that's because both are seriously overrated).

Modern Warfare 2 exclusive DLC deal explained by LordVonPS3

The hilarious thing about this article is that the "exclusive DLC maps" are already on the X360 MW2 DVD. People are paying to unlock something they already have in their hands and by regurgitating this tripe, CVG is (un?)knowingly contributing to the deception.

With that in mind, I think Greenberg should have been quoted as follows...

"I think about it like a stealth tax, or like getting raped by the company you love... When you buy that full price game and then pay again to access the hidden content, it makes us more money. At the end of the day, we want to make as much money out of as many Xbox 360 fans as possible." he said at CES.

this is ridiculous i bought it on ps3 because i like the controls better than the 360 plus i got friends that when we go on-line we tare we destroy all those players that think they're good but but if they think that the 360 version is superior so be it i tried it on both consoles several times and still i never like the controls anyway keep making DLC exclusive for xbox and lose all the playstation users money what's wrong with these people don't we count or what our money isn't worth s..t to these guy what's the matter god i hate this very soon i'm going to stop buying games if they keep up with this is unfair Evil or Very MadEvil or Very Mad

This hasn't explained nothing about the DLC, just made me not want to buy an xbox even more now. Any company thats thinks its ok and is even proud about hindering people's enjoyment just because they think more people will then buy their chavvy machine than put up with their bully boy tactics deserves to go under. But as they know people are quite selfish creature's so microc0ck will get away with it time and time again.

Count me out Microsoft! Sorry but I do not like your exclusive games, PS3 has much better games over all in my opinion, thats why I bought PS3 the day it came out and thats why I don't want to pay for Xbox Live becuase you already have ENOUGH money! Stop getting these stupid exclusives, PS3 is better quality I think, just make your own games and stop taking DLC's from PS3 and PC its pathetic, it doesn't affect sales much at all, take tomb raider underworld, even though there were exclusive DLC's for the 360 version, the PS3 version still outsold the rest! And GTA IV 360 sales were hardly affected much either. I chose MW2 on PS3 becuase I don't want to pay for internet, when I already pay for broadband, and plus I only have the PS3.
And anyone who says 'well the PS3 is over priced' it is not! It is under priced, when it first came out they were selling it for nearly £100 less than it cost them to build each one, they were making a loss for a while becuase of that, shows how Sony doesn't look for every custumers penny, but customers satisfaction.

ive seen alot of this now, people going for the ps3 instead of the 360, not long ago it was all 360 to some people, but i see so many people going for the ps3 now, regardless of ms little exclusive deals that they say will make people buy a 360 instead
Miss_Wacy on 11 Jan '10
The thing i find amusing is that only PS3 owners have posted on this; I own both consoles (although my PS3's Bluray drive died 13 months in and Sony want to charge me £99 to fix it so it has not been touched for 6 months) and my personal preference is the 360. (just for the record that is not a cue to get into the RROD debate)

In all honesty though BOTH companies are guilty of either getting their wallets out or using other means to get exclusivity, look at Ghostbusters and Arkham Asylum to name just 2 off the top of my head for PS3.

I personally do not buy a game or console based on the extra content or DLC for each format, i buy a game based on what i get on day one so DLC does not influence my decission in any way.

Can i also say regarding the controls that my understanding is that the button layout would be identical on PS3 and 360 seeing as besides the different shape of pad the buttons are identical; so it would be down to pad preference not control layout.

Well done Microsoft for signing this deal. It wont win the 2010 ps3 vs Xbox 360 war, but it wont hurt Microsofts bid. Personally, i hate this game. Its so easy in single player, veteran is a peice of p**s, and I don't like the maps, killstreaks etc on multiplayer. I am an xbox owner but doesnt mean i am anti-PS3. I like the idea of Heavy rain but am more than happy to stick to my xbox, with Splinter Cell, Alan Wake and Mass effect gaining my attention this year.

Much prefer MAG. Won't be getting DLC unless it was something cool like zombies in WaW. MW2 as it stands is ruined online with campers. Plus my live ran out and I wont be re-newing it as I rarely used it. Will check out splinter cell though (have a free month of gold voucher somewhere)

This is funny. Sony is guilty of these exact same practises, both this gen AND last. Its just become more open and talked about now. Its called business, so stop whining and deal with it. Sony dont give a s**t about you, and neither does MS for that matter. They want your money and thats it. So cut the "this isnt fair" or "MS is evil" crap, its really getting old.
gazza_be on 11 Jan '10
Surely when the exclusivity deal ends and the DLC is available on the PS3 we will still have to pay for it.

The way some people are talking they seem to think that only Microsoft are going to charge for it.
paul_brown940 on 11 Jan '10
Not that i play, or even like this game..however:
I understand the business aspect of it. It just feels incredibly cheap to shaft all those people who brought the game for the ps3 before any of this was announced. If they had announced it previous to release, thats one thing. Post release it seems a very cheap thing to do.
Go play Borderlands instead if I were you lot.
jazzy_p on 11 Jan '10
Its only a timed exclusive so who cares, at the end of the day with how MW2 has performed with all the bugs and hacks MS have basically paid for a beta period for the new content, the 360 users can iron out all the issues during their exclusive period Laughing.

Plus the far superior Bad Company 2 will be out by then so anyone that actually wants a decent online game will be on that anyway Wink

I bought PS3 version for two reasons:-

1) Don't want to be ripped off by MS (£40 a year for Live and more money for DLC).

2) PSN is free.
wildhook2 on 11 Jan '10
Firstly off, what is it? Surely that’s the most important thing here, if it’s some new spec ops stuff that’s separate from the campaign then I might be interested, for anything competitive multiplayer based I’m not.

Also the whole exclusivity point is moot anyway when preceded by ‘timed’, no one really cares as it all depends on what machine you play the most anyway, if all your friends have a PS3 then they’ll have the same amount of time (which is likely to be short) than you to wait. It’s all rather silly really.

Um, thats the same reason just worded differently twice Rolling Eyes And DLC will cost the same on PSN as it will on XBL. I fail to see how this is MS ripping us off and not Infinity Ward or Activision.
gazza_be on 11 Jan '10
I totally disagree with any exclusive deals. I don't like them and I find it hard to believe that they actually work.

Forgetting people that have both PS3 and a 360 for a second, the majority of us are either Sony or Microsoft gamers. Regardless of which type you are I cannot see a big Sony fan purchasing a 360 just for DLC, or visa versa. I'm sure there are plenty of 360 gamers that would happily play a PS3 exclusive if it were available to them. But how many are honestly going to buy a console for just one game, or even a couple for that matter?

In my eyes exclusive deals suggest just one thing. Developers really don't care about gamers at all. They sign these deals assuming it'll be better for them financially. I can understand that with a small business, but we're nearly always talking about companies that make millions, often tens of millions from their games.

I know developers are running a business and I'm sure exclusive deals are supposed to be better for them financially, but I find it hard to believe sometimes. Surely if a game is good, will sell well, is a sequel from a previously top seller, has a developer who has genuine faith in their product, and is made by a company who have just a little respect for gamers, would want as many gamers as possible playing their game?

As a previous poster said, my console choice was down to the controller. I don't care for Sony or Microsoft. I have nothing but contempt for the two companies, which just about reflects their attitude towards us. I have favourite games, but they are chosen from the games I get to play. No exclusive deal has or ever would work on me. I'm heavily against exclusive deals because they're only about money. They're not for gamers benefits at all.

As for Modern Warfare 2, sadly for the companies involved there'll be no chance to get hold of any more of my money with this game, as it'll be part-exchanged at the end of the month. I can honestly say gaming on the computer looks more and more attractive with each passing month.

Of course they'll benefit financially. IW/Activision will get the money from all the XBL downloads. They'll get the money from all the PSN downloads when made available. AND they will have got the sum of money that MS paid to get the exclusivity in the first place.
gazza_be on 11 Jan '10

It'll probably cost more on the PSN. The WaW map pack bundle costs 2000MS points on live (about £16) whilst it costs £19.99 on the playstation store. This has happened with a lot of things recently like arcade games, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Battlefield 1943 both cost an extra couple of quid on PSN. Seems to me that if you buy quite a few things off the store in a year, compared to buying them off Live, that your probably paying an extra £20-30.
Roughly about the same price as a Live subscription. Kinda evens it out.
ensabahnur on 11 Jan '10
I got it on 360 instead of PS3 simply because the friends i wanna play it with all have it on 360. Both console are great and only narrow minded fanboys think other wise. They both have great ezclusives.
PS3 = Uncharted's, MGS4, MAG, Demon's Souls, Agent etc

360 = Gears', Fable, Forza, Halo, Episode's from Liberty City etc

Being a PS3 owner and once fan of COD who hates paid for dlc map packs. This exclusive deal is one reason that was given to me why i should buy the PS3 version no chance of it following the subscription based bi-monthly episodic experiment COD W@W did with its map packs.

I brought it on the 360 because the community is better. MS caring enough to look after its customers buy reinvesting our subs is just a bonus.
360_Fan on 11 Jan '10
I have both consoles but decided on xbox for 3 reasons, I have put them in the order I find most important:

1: Have more friends on live than I do on PSN

2: I prefer the xbox pad for FPS. I prefer the way that sticks are placed further apart. Also that the fire and look down the gun buttons are on the trigger's rather that the shoulder button on PS3

3: Is actually slightly superior on the xbox compared to ps3 as per:

It's just so hard to like MS at all, they are too American and too in your face trying to be cool.

I can see the point of map packs, adding new life to your game and getting players to come back to it, but I really don't see the value in it as they are too expensive. Not to mention they divide the community. Seems a waste of time to have it as an exclusive, I really can't see PS3 players going out and buying a 360 just to play these extra maps.

jazzy_p on 11 Jan '10
All i really think the idea of the exclusivity is not to encourage people to buy an Xbox 360 based on DLC alone, MS and Sony know that consoles are not sold on DLC alone.

I think it is aimed more towards rewarding current 360 owners and attempting to entice owners of both consoles to get the 360 version of the game.

I also dont understand how people that claim to dislike the game are even reading this article and then commenting on the exclusivity etc; why waste your time on something that holds no interest for you?

Personally I think this is a great move by MS business wise, Sony would do the same for there “USA” customers if they could be bothered to try, and that’s a fact!

At the end of the day it makes no odds to us already playing the 360 weather or not we get it b4 the PS3 does, but if this helps “hopefully” to build more members to the gold community it can only be a good thing imo Smile

Sour grapes is all I'm hearing. MS stumped up the cash for a timed exclusive. I pay for my Live subscription right? If I get little treats on top of it being an excellent service, then I am all up for that. What would you reaction be if it were Sony who stumped up the cash? I would wager probably not 'wooooo yeah, eat our beta Xbots, woot'.

Usual corporate guff. It'll be on PS3 about 3 months after 360, these timed exclusive deals are pretty much useless. If they're coming to all other platforms as well, having it as a temp exclusive is hardly reason to be delighted about. I'm not fussed either way, it'll be good to see the 360 owners struggling with error strewn pieces of DLC, if the MW2 launch is anything to go by.

Indeed why. I don't wish PS3 owners to purchase poor games or download bad pieces of DLC. Your a sad man to wish that.
TykerD3 on 11 Jan '10
I think these are the stupidest arguments I've seen on here for a long time. How are 360 owners getting raped? Are Sony going to be giving it away free to their customers? Are MS charging more than normal to get it early? If it's on the DVD and ready to be unlocked, I'm sure it's on the BR disc with all it's extra capacity!

Anyone buying rip off DLC (we don't even know if this will be a rip off!) is getting screwed over - Sony and MS (or more accurately, Activision, EA, Capcom etc) are as bad as each other.

I still don't see the difference in the supposed 'moral' arguments between MS/Sony paying for exclusive DLC and exclusive games full stop. Most people bitch about DLC anyway, so be thankful when you get full releases instead. I'd rather MS put more money into new IPs/studios like Sony do, rather than DLC. But you know, you can always NOT buy the damn thing.

i got ps3 version as i got rid of my 360 in july due to alot of issues but i found out that i was paying more money for my dlc on 360 so it done my head in but now dlc is more wallet friendly lol i miss 360 but im happy with my ps3 online is free and aint as bad as ppl make out for me anyway but what i can make from the statement is that xbox get these exclusives so they can make more money gettin ppl to buy their (very unreliable i had 3 in 10 months)console just for map exclusives is a sad way in my opinion money CAN buy u love nowadays and i cannot understand ppl who stand by it i never had a ps2 so yeah i never had gta vice city etc so i can do without mw2 dlc for a few months i dont think it will be much to shout about anyway extra spec op missions and prob game modes that are already on the disc simular to the resi evil 5 dlc so anyway happy gaming all
sweenysod on 11 Jan '10
Can i also add that the argument that the 360 users are beta testing the DLC for PS3 users is probably the worst argument i have heard.

and also the hope of PS3 owners having the content in 2 weeks is hopeful to say the least, i would imagine the exclusivity period being a little longer.

and the other argument about 360 owners being robbed because the content is on the disk, i have no doubt there are elements of it on the disk but not in final form and not all of what the DLC will contain.

the only people getting screwed over are the people that are forced to buy the DLC which would equal exactly 0. Only people that want the DLC will choose to purchase it and if they have weighed up the content v's price and still purchased it then they have made an educated purchase and not been robbed.

Laughing

If that is the truth of the matter then it is unforgivable in my opinion. As stated previously, I refuse to pay more than 10-15 quid for this game at most! It's simply not worth more than that and on the PC it leans more towards the 10 quid mark (which is the platform I would want to play a FPS on).

Where does it say it'll b only for a week that xbox will have it before ps3 that some of u say and how r xbox live users beta testers for ps3 owners since they r diff consoles and diff software altogether to make games for each system, i think both systems r gonna have their own issues that dont relate to each other at all.

Timed exclusives it seems is the way forward when either SONY or MS are stumping up cash. Wait till this time next year when DLC is Natal exclusive for 3 months, then 360 and finally everyone else.

I actually think that the loser in this deal is Activision. They would have better total sales of the DLC if they were to release it across all three platforms simultaneously and market it accordingly. Splitting the release dates smacks of pay offs and cheapens the image of the brand.

Well people could just have learned from the s**tty way IW treated the PS3 community last time, didn't buy MW2 and not going to, IW is M$ bitches and sellouts, they don't deserve my money.

I bought the xbox version because i found out that xbox was getting the dlc first before the game was released. Im sick of the way Sony treat gamers endless delays crap exlusives and no dlc for grand theft auto. Microsoft maybe greedy but you do get what you pay for.

aww look gotta get all defensive cause the truth hurts, point being is, i dont pay to play online, beside broadband fees, i only gota wait a week maybe 2'ish for a dlc that I probably wont buy and by the time its released on PSN most of the bugs will be fixed because you and millions of others of xbox users will have complained and reported bug after bug after bug, i love it cause really aaron greenmeal and M$ are doing ps3 users sony a favour, and you picked up the bill, nice

Which truth is that? The one you made up? Yeah, that really smarts Rolling Eyes

If you really 'love' that the way you say you do, I would suggest you need to get out more. And probably get laid.

As I said, if Sony had stumped up, I doubt you would be mouthing off about how they had screwed you for a beta, like DLC doesn't get tested before it's released.

As for footing the bill, I have a PS3, I have a 360, and I have no problem paying for Live. End of.

Oh, and I doubt they will have fixed all those hundreds of bugs we will be reporting in 'a week maybe 2'ish'. Actually, perhaps I could recoup some of my Live outlay by betting you it'll be a little longer than that?

Sour grapes.
