Activision's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 topped the UK all formats chart in 2009 as the year's bestselling game, according to data released today by ELSPA and GfK Chart-Track.
EA's FIFA 10 placed second, while Nintendo titles Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus rounded off the top five.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II came sixth, ahead of Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii and Sega's Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games.
Demonstrating the massive popularity of the Call Of Duty and FIFA franchises, 2008 releases COD: World At War and FIFA 09 took ninth and tenth on the annual chart, respectively.
"There is no doubt that 2009 belonged to Activision, but it was a strong year for many software developers and publishers," said ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson.
"The rise of family-orientated, multiplayer games in 2009 also demonstrates how videogames have expanded into new genres finding fresh audiences. If nothing else, last year confirmed that we are now a nation of enthusiastic and energetic gamers here in Britain."

Aye, good to see the PC platform apparently being non-existent according to these ELSPA chaps.
Anyhow, I've enjoyed "FIFA 10", "Batman: Arkham Asylum", "Left4Dead2 (on the PC)" and "CoD4: MW (also on the PC)", "Gears of War 2", "Halo 3" from those lists. I've dabbled with the beginning of "GTA IV" but have yet to seriously dive in. I have not enjoyed "RE 5".
P.S. Never mind the plethora of other titles I've bought during the course of 2009 and early 2010 which haven't made it to the posted lists in the article.
^ That is a surprise.. Out of those games last year, I got MW2, FIFA 10, AC2, KZ2 - traded in, UC2, LBP, RE5, BAA, and InFamous, all on PS3. I have others on that list but they weren't released in 2009. I could buy another 10 games this year too, maybe more.
I'd say 2009 belonged to Nintendo. I bet the development costs are a fraction of MW2, there are many more Nintendo games and some of those games are old. It's just more money in the bank!
KFD, it's worth perservering with RE5. It actually gets better as you level up your weapons, and it really kicked in for me on about my third play through, although that was great as I did it co-op. Of course, it might be that it just doesn't click with you though!
Same as Bayonetta. I want to make it last as it's so f**king good, but I'm really looking forward to building up my moves and weapons and attacking the game again.

Thanks for the feedback, Ric however, "RE5" had its chance and blew it. I'm not touching that game again even for 1 pound. "Bayonetta" I might pick-up after it falls in price; right now I'm waiting for my copy of "Darksiders" to arrive so it can join my backlog of newly bought games that I will complete before buying anymore ("Mass Effect 2" being the exception).
