Microsoft treating Natal 'as a new console'

Xbox Europe calls tech 'truly revolutionary'; forecasts spectacular E3 2010
Microsoft has said it is internally treating Natal's launch 'like a new console' - and predicted big things for E3 2010.

The hardware is set to launch in November this year, with few details known about the games that will accompany its arrival.

However, European Xbox developer account manager Ben Board said that the accessory would be "truly revolutionary".

"We're treating this like the launch of a new console," he told Develop.

"You can imagine what the months leading up to that will look like for us and the team, not to mention the developers making those precious launch titles: bonkers, in a word, but also incredibly exciting to be involved in something I truly believe to be revolutionary.

He added: "As a gamer, lots of stuff that floats my boat: Alan Wake, Aliens v Predator, Bayonetta, Bioshock 2, Blur, Crackdown 2, God of War 3, GT5, Last Guardian, Mafia 2, Mass Effect 2, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Split Second... It'll be interesting to see Sony's wands in action, and perhaps we'll discover what will come after Wii. I think this E3 will be a biggie."

So MS next console is gonna be pretty gay then? Cool
SoLiDsNaKE** on 8 Jan '10
I read somewhere that Microsoft themselves have managed to better the original Natal Chip using software, hopefully this will keep the costs down.

Looking a good year for us gamers though, no matter which machine you own. Very Happy
steve_2003 on 8 Jan '10
Keep the costs down yeah - but sabotaging the quality just a bit - Hardware is more reliable than software
Tinseltopia on 8 Jan '10
leaving it to software to process uses up 15% cpu.

thats enough to make the current standard of game we are used to i.e. burnout, COD etc, slow to a crawl.

thats not what i call truly revolutionary.

it will be gimped, basic looking gimmick based games.

load of toss.

fuck motion. they are just trying to cash in on nintendos success... not gonna happen.
svd_grasshopper on 8 Jan '10
We shall see won't we.

If it's s**t then MS will have egg on their faces. If it's good though, I might even pick one up.
kimoak on 8 Jan '10
Revolutionary they say. No, we, the consumer will be the judge of that.
Zero_Cool on 8 Jan '10
This 'Natal is a console' subject was a news item weeks ago...
Wozzakl on 8 Jan '10
When we start seeing some games people can start judging if it'll really live up the huge hype MS are giving it. But they are making some really big stories about this now, so it had better be good.

Also don't treat it like a new console MS, no one wants their new camera to RROD on its first day!
only_777 on 8 Jan '10
Well they're not treating it as a new console, they're treating the LAUNCH LIKE it's a new console!

I take that as meaning they're going to push it big time in the press, more than a normal peripheral or maybe even a game. But then this is MS, of course they're going to give it the big sell, they've already started!

Natal seems to get a lot more column inches than motion plus and the wands/orbs, so as distasteful as it may be, it is working in terms of buzz for the genral public.

gota love the eye toy fairplay Wink
bunneyo on 8 Jan '10
I cant wait for this. If it does sell for £50 then i'll get one. The Kids will enjoy it. And remember, you don't have to buy it. Not looking forward to Natal Fifa, all that diving around the living room......will be a laugh. Xbox will dominate 2010,as the PS3 did in 2009. The Xbox has lots of great exclusive titles coming out, like Alan Wake, Splinter cell, Mass Effect 2. Will be a great year.
TykerD3 on 8 Jan '10
Natal and Wand ( i think that is the ps3's one)

Is microsoft and Sony's way to get into the casual market. But nintendo have allready got the sales, games and more importantly the advertising and brand name.

The fact Natal is relying on software will indeed take up more resources .. the fact that some people say it will take up to 15 % of the cpu resource, i doubt that, that is way to high for microsoft to ignore it.

Sony's wand thing is litteraly just like the wii, except for it has better tracking, which isn't surprising, as the wii's one is pretty terrible.

All in all, Nintendo stick to party games, Sony and Microsoft work on 'proper' games. Ditch the motion s**t.

Splinter cell, Mass Effect 2.
Mass effect and splinter cell are coming to PC.. not that it matters to award people.

So it comes with extended warrenty? Laughing

So it comes with extended warrenty? Laughing

No. You won't get the extended warranty until there's been a few class actions in the USA and Anne Robinson and the crew have got stuck in to 'em.
ricflair on 8 Jan '10
I know my family will have great fun playing it. They don't care about it being a Wii "copy" or whatever ... I just know that my folks will love it.

Am disappointed about the chip coming out though - means it's less likely to be used in FPS games for things like peering around corners or ducking incoming fire.
dunkaldo on 8 Jan '10
Clearly everyone with an opinion of Natals internal processes and how it will be the biggest flop ever have had loads of hands on time with it... Rolling Eyes

Look, it could be lame, it could be the most amazing piece of tech ever. Fact is apart from a few promo vids, no one knows much about it, apart from the technical specs. You don't know how running software will affect performance. You don't know what the games are like. You don't know jack, basically.

So sit tight, wait a while, check it out when the information is available and make an opinion then, when you have FACTS.

Until then, STFU.

The hype train is leaving...get off quickly.

So your saying your not even going to try it and ware going to ignore it even before you've seen what it does and what games come out for it? Rolling Eyes
Its a good job not all people as closed minded as you.
For what its worth, I think Natal will be rubbish, but I'll give it a go as I still might be suprised.

Soviet1918 on 8 Jan '10
Imagine if you will playing a RPG, you come across some nasties and need to change your weapon, instead of pausing the game and going into you inventory and clunkily swapping guns/swords/dildos you hit your chest and a gloriously cool third person shot of you reveals a star like device springing open on your back with your weapons holstered around it, imagine then reaching over your shoulder and whipping your desired weapon out to kick some ass....sounds good doesn't it?...that's why Natal will revolutionise the way we play games, because people with more imagination than you will come up with ways to use your body to streamline gameplay. Natal could be the proverbial epic fail but as an artist it makes my imagination salivate...imagine what that times a few thousand can acomplish?

@Zero_Cool - No you snooker cue it won't be the consumers that decide if Natal is revolutionary...it will be the games developers.
Dave_25 on 8 Jan '10
another homophobic sony fanboy in soviet1918 awell thats what you get on the cheapo network Wink
dorian2011 on 8 Jan '10
Ahhhhhhh - so this is how MS are going to justify putting a monster of a price tag on Natal. Because it's not just a gimmick like the EyeToy, silly! Wink
newsinthefield on 8 Jan '10
I can't really imagine Natal being practical for anything. You have to perform the actions YOURSELF for them to show up on screen? So what happens when you're playing Dead Or Alive and you want to hit a Jumping - Spinning - Dragon - Backbreaker - Triple - Kick??? LOL......good luck with that one.

Microsoft are going to take your money for a crappy product AND cause you severe bodily harm in the process.
David Macphail on 9 Jan '10
A new console uh?

That doesnt sound good ,specially when we know what happens to old MS consoles when the new ones are introduced.

Now this cant happen as Natal needs the 360 to work ,but if their resources are spent in Natal and their already slim programming force (Lionhead,Rare ,Bungie as second party still for some time,Turn 10 ...nothing more) gets focused in Natal then this means trouble for 360 games in the future.

I suggest you read more about Natal, as you clearly don't have a clue about it.

It's more to do with the marketing of the product, so that doesn't really fly. Their development studios also have large teams and can recruit more staff (which they have been doing recently), so it's feasible they can work on more than one project at a time. As for the reliability, the first Xbox was fine, just big and ugly. Smile
