God Of War 3

Sony discusses how its long-awaited exclusive pushes PS3's power to the max
Fans will finally be able to get their hands on God Of War III in a couple of months, after a long wait since its predecessor's release back in 2007. Here, Tim Ingham grills Sony's UK product manager for the game, Claire Backhouse, for more info...

What will God Of War III offer that consumers can't currently get from any other next-gen title?
God of War 3 has been developed for the PS3 utilising a new game engine built from the ground up and state-of-the-art visual technologies.

The development team behind God of War III has made huge strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds.

With texture resolutions quadrupling since God of War II on PS2, God of War III, in its debut on PS3, will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos' fateful quest.

Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale that is four times larger than its predecessor. God of War 3 combines these new technologies with the much loved gameplay elements from the previous games - Puzzle solving, brutal combat and epic set-piece battles.

It also benefits from a deep and involving storyline, steeped in Greek Mythology. This is what makes God of War 3 unique and sets it apart from other next gen titles.

Why is God Of War so well suited to the PS3?
The developers have worked hard to use the power of the PS3 to make GOW3 look amazing and have added features that are only possible with PS3. The dynamic lighting solution employed in GOW III is only feasible through the computing power provided by the Cell SPUs.

For example, using the High Dynamic Range Lighting (HDRL) technology, the camera - when using Krato's sightline - will emulate the human retina, causing players to feel a sharp brightness when Kratos exits a dark area and enters a sunlit area, similar to how the human eye would need to adjust.

What in the game will really 'wow' fans of previous GoW games?
In addition to the battles, storyline and elements like the lighting mentioned above there are a few new special treats in store for GoW fans. One such treat is rideable creatures.

The menacing creatures of Greek mythology in God of War 3 can now be manipulated against their will, as Kratos uses them to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies, reveal puzzles and secrets, and as tools of complete annihilation.

There are also new deadly weapons such as the Cestus-powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength-and other brutal instruments of war that will allow Kratos to learn ruthless new techniques such as grappling with enemies and launching explosive wall-to-ground attacks.

Could we be talking about the biggest title of 2010?
I think if you are over 18 and want an amazing single player experience this year then God of War 3 is a must have.

Our marketing campaign will be covering off homepage takeovers, TV spots, Cinema spots, TV channel promotions, press ads and a special God of War Competition.

The marketing plus the strength and quality of the game should ensure it's a massive title for the first year of the new decade.

At least they didn't come out and say it will be the biggest game of 2010. They were just asked the question.

However, it sounds to me like GOWIII is going to be a mega treat this March. It'll certainly be one of the PS3's biggest games of 2010, that's for sure.

Ye fairplay they should advertise the s**t outta this game, I rekon it deserves it! March couldn't come quick enough!

all though they still maintain hdr lighting is only possible on the cell even though other games have had it for years. i am sure these 'talented' devs would find a way to make it work on other architectures, it would just need different coding. but as a product manager it is her job to hype things up, but MS arent allowed to do that?

Still frustratingly no new clues given away, other than we already know from the demo. I am so excited about it, I'm hoping for constant brutal gameplay with hilariously violent animation backed up with the usual complelling storyline. Oh yes and the titan's handing out some pain to the Gods then Kratos will probably use the Titan's to help him defeat the Gods then betray them and they will be the epic scale bosses we have been promised. Very Happy

at least they didn't start talking about their main rivals, and why the ps3 (if at all) is better.. unlike some other console developer...

GoW3 definitely has my attention. You reckon I need to play through the first two in order to understand what's going on, or will the intro be enough to bring me up to speed?
Dajmin on 8 Jan '10
Dajmin - You owe it to yourself to get the first two and play through them first. hey are still awesome fun. If you have a PS3 then I recommend the HD re-masters I definately recommend them and the trophies are simple in most cases..

Bloody hell man! She's excited about her work, big deal. At least she's doing it without slagging off the competition.
