About SamKnows.com

SamKnows was set up in 2003 as a tool to provide broadband campaigners with the information needed to bring broadband to their area. Six years on, with much progress on the Internet front, our site has changed significantly. These days SamKnows focuses on providing up-to-date news, views and solutions for primarily the country's broadband users as well as the industry, Government, regulators, stakeholders and the media.

There are two sides to the SamKnows operation: SamKnows.com; and the SamKnows Lab. The site is the free resource of data, news and analysis, with profiles of the people within the industry who we think are making a difference, plus reviews of the latest gear. If you step inside the Lab you'll be able to see our exciting projects for yourself, such as our 2008 project with OFCOM to create a method of benchmarking ISPs.

As well as covering all the latest news on broadband access, our writers are happiest when opining on the state of this fast-moving sector and analysing what it all means for our readers. We are also interested in Next-Generation Access and are well aware of the fact that many Britons are affected by Notspots, something that the Government's Digital Britain campaign promises to address.

In 2008 we launched the Performance Monitoring Network in the SamKnows Lab – a solution for benchmarking the performance of ISPs. We also offer a series of web services that are used by many other broadband-related websites to enhance the service they provide to their users. The most popular web service in use is the Availability Checker API, which is now used by over 150 websites. You can read more about it here. Other projects developed by our labs include the Bandwidth Meter and SamKnows Connect, and we have other exciting ideas in the pipeline.

People often ask us how we fund our projects. Many of them we are able to do ourselves, but concepts such as the Ofcom Performance Network require substantial funds. In order to raise these we're working with www.comparebroadband.co.uk which runs on a straight feed from SamKnows Connect.

Whilst we try to ensure that we have the most accurate and up to date information available on the website, errors do occur from time to time, so please get in touch and point out anything that is glaringly wrong. You may wish to have a read of the Frequently Asked Questions first though.
