Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill has told PC Zone that he's never been asked to lend his voice to a Star Wars game.
Despite his starring role in George Lucas's original movie trilogy and a successful voice-over career in games - including the Wing Commander series and recent smash Batman: Arkham Asylum - Hamill said that LucasArts had never contacted him to ask if he fancied relinquishing his role for a console release.
He told Zone:
"When I played Luke from 1977 to 1983, games were in their infancy. I talked about turning a page and starting a new chapter. Those movies had a beginning, middle and end, and everyone sort of moved on.
"I don't really know how to answer that, because I've never been asked to do it. That's fine, though.
"If you're playing Luke the way he was in the films - from his late teens to mid-'20s - I've outgrown the role. In the story, Luke is so boy-next-door farm boy, it's like Dorothy in Oz. All the other characters that surround him are fantastic."
Mark Hamill sounds like a man who has a sound grasp of himself and the industry he works in. He's also considered one of the most talented voice artists apparently and with good reason if you listen to one of his most recent roles as the voice of The Joker in "Batman: Arkham Asylum". Good on him.
Mark Hamil's voice work is incredible. He doesn't even sound remotely like himself.
The Joker in Arkham Asylum is just one example. The voice work makes the Joker character come alive and is possibly why that game feels so Batman. The Joker just sounds sinister and has the better lines of dialogue in the whole game in my view.
Really weird. I hadn't actually thought about it before. Strange how they seemed to allow him to play the joker again in Arkham Asylum (he was in the animated batman series before for those who don't know) but Star Wars devs don't want to know. Well at least he's not bothered by it!
Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt "relinquishing" mean to give something up not to be asked to do something?.
And i always thought he voiced luke in the jedi knights game jedi academy, i guess not, the guy did a pretty good impression of mark as i thought it was him for sure
The bit that gets my goat is the fact that lucasarts or any other publisher with the star wars stuff will not release a game based on the original films. I would personally love an adventure game like KOTOR with Luke and Han etc as the main characters and the original settings. All this clone stuff just isn’t as good. George just seems hell bent on only allowing games based on the clone wars.
Totally agree roger4000. My dream has been to play a first person shooter based around Han Solo. The character is interesting, and I think his job and attitude lend themselves to adventures that would make a wonderful game.
As horrible as this sounds I geniunely think the games we have in mind won't appear until after Mr Lucas has gone! He seems determined to play with the expansion of Star Wars and has pushed the original film and series aside somewhat. Perhaps the physical and mental strain it cost him making the original movie, not to mention the cost to his private life has something to do with his attitude. It's a shame the hunger for success and skills he possessed in his younger days have left him. I think he's now surrounded by Yes-men who ultimately do no one any favours.
Then again, maybe you and I are alone on this roger4000 and Lucas is giving people what they want... maybe everyone wants Clone Wars crap and no one cares about the original characters. Maybe everyone wanted Jar Jar and whiney Anakin and stories about trade disputes!
