MAG open beta goes live

Download trial from PSN now
Sony Computer Entertainment's just confirmed that the MAG open beta is available for download on PSN.

The global Beta allows you to compete with players in the game's 64-player 'Sabotage' and 256-player 'Domination' game modes.

Your path to playing it is a simple three-step process, says SCEE:

  • Log on to the PlayStation Store and download the MAG Beta file like you would any other freely-available PSN video or demo (37 MB)
  • Launch the MAG Beta program from your XMB to download a special patch that will restart MAG once the update has been received (another 38 MB)
  • After the reboot, the beta will reconnect and download the actual game data so that you can play (1.8 GB - 2.3 GB depending on your region)

"It's possible you may experience some issues connecting to games for the time being," says the PS Blog, which assures that Sony's "working to resolve" the problems.

The beta's due to end on January 11 at 07:59 GMT. Go on then, get on with it.

played the closed beta and just couldnt get into it, yes its a beta and its no where near the finished product, but i just felt everyone was running around like headless chickens and never really felt or got the great battle experience with 256 people.

As usual with the PS3 online it cant connect to the server(s)!! I understand its a beta but the PS3's online service is lame compared to Live.
And WHY the hell cant you download the game the normal way i.e. in the background so I can continue using the PS3??!!.....

Odd, that it seems so horrible for you. You might have those XBUTT glasses on.Rolling Eyes PSN has been pretty solid for me, minus issues with disconnects in GRID DEMO. Uncharted 2 DEMO has been pretty solid. I'd think final games should be quite smooth. XBL might be more robust, but PSN has not been a joke service to me. I do have a very good connection(though wireless, and 2 floors above router - D-LINK DIR655 router rox!).

But yeah, this one(1.50) seems like a disaster at this time. It showed me as the only player waiting for a game(!!!), and I had problems with the server. It has been said that it will be fixed, however. BETA is BETA. However, last BETA has been pretty solid online, even on the 256 player map.

I've got a descent connection and it took me 2 hours or so before I could actually play a game on my PS3 when I first got it due to the random installs and whatnot. I thought Sony were taking the mick at first.

I may give this a miss.

I enjoyed the last beta. I only tried the 64 player map though, but had no sign of lag. I'm surprised by the amount of abuse that the PSN gets, seeing as it's free. The only things I dislike is the obvious lack of cross game chat and the like. The actual servers tend to be on a par with XBL. Never had any lag in Warhawk, Resistance 2, KZ2 or MAG beta.

Right just finished the install (took about 2 hours) and still can't play. Wont seem to go past the licence agreement screen. Will try again in a bit

I didn't realise my 20mb connection was soo bad it deserved a smug wink. We cant all live in Korea.

Well, you DID make it seem like your connection is horrible. Overnight?! Learn to express yourself better, then. F-Bombing for no good reason is just dumb. Wink

A) all i said was id do it overnight, and you decided to think your connection was soo superior it was worth commenting on and included the smug wink, which just makes you look like a tw@.

B) would like to know what you think the F bomb is.

C) could whoever posted DAT lot above please try to right in English. Not fussed about grammar but there is a line lol.

tbh I hadn't clocked bulletin point 3 so my 1st post makes me a tw@ aswell lol.

Had a quick match and everything seems good (well killed more than died, which is more than i can say for mw2 lol). Just got to get used to the controls.

Yep, exactly how I felt. The game the devs wanted to make requires discipline from all players, ensuring tactics. Unfortunately you can't get even get that from games where 8v8 is the standard so how they ever expected to achieve anything other than chaos with 256 players is beyond me.

Remember all the complaints about MW's AI respawn tactic? The closed beta just felt like playing on a team of respawning AI's against a team of respawning AI's from MW to be quite honest.

And the lack of vehicles is just an outright mistake, in my opinion. I understand they want to set themselves apart from BF, but without vehicles and no control over squads it just descends into madness - a madness I probably won't return to anytime soon.

Downloaded this last night in about 30 minutes. First of all I couldn't get past the Terms & conditions page. So I turned it off for an hour and went on the xbox for some trouble free gaming.

Came back to it and the option to create a player had appeared. So I created my little chap ready for the battlefield. First 3 tries I was returned to the front end due to disconnection "Please check your connection". Tried once more. Got into a screen with a few options. Disconnected. "Please check your connection" Turned it off for an hour to go play some Xbox and a little trouble free gaming. Good times.

Came back to it and disconnected ("Please check your connection"Wink to the main screen twice. Loaded up Uncharted 2 - online is fine, my connection is fine. Loaded up MAG. Disconnected to the main screen 3 times.

Shoddy, very shoddy. I don't have endless time to TRY and play games these days and this experience has wasted 3 hours and soured MAG for me. I won't be picking this up with so much other goodness on the horizon.

Logged off, uninstalled and deleted.

Fin.

I've tried so many times to start a game but I always end up getting a error message. NICE ONE SONY!
djs88 on 5 Jan '10
I finally managed to get into a game. Not as bad as i thought it would be, but i'm still unimpressed.

Considering it's a "massive action game" the game i had consisted of around ten of us, standing around guarding outpost "A", while one or two enemies attempted to storm our base. For fifteen minutes. Fifteen loooooooong, boring minutes.

This whole "be a part of a larger" war was completely lost on me. Yes, yes, yes, it's a beta, but considering it's out in 3 weeks makes me think i'll be in no rush to pick this one up.
