Sega: "Probably" no more mature Wii games

Poor MadWorld, Conduit sales force publisher's hand
Sega will "probably not" release any more mature-rated games for the Wii, following disappointing sales of MadWorld and The Conduit last year, it's said.

Sega of America development director, Constantine Hantzopoulos - perhaps named after some sort of Greek god - told 1UP: "Are we going to do more mature titles for the Wii? Probably not.

"It was a space that was open and we took a gamble on it," he added. "It's like, 'wow there's no mature games on the Wii, is there an audience out there?' We did some research and it said that there was an audience out there.

"I won't comment about Nintendo, they did champion The Conduit as 'this is a Nintendo game'... I think they did OK by us."

According to Hantzopoulos, growing gamers are buying into PS3 and Xbox 360 "much younger" than in previous console cycles. "That's exactly what we found out, anyone above 12-years-old was playing PS3 and Xbox 360 shooters."

We're more bothered by the dampening prospects of a MadWorld sequel than Conduit 2, to be honest.

It's a shame. Fair play to Sega for giving it a go, but unfortunately they're fighting against Nintendo's marketing which has poisoned the perception of the Wii among traditional games. Casual shovelware box. That's all it is now.

I think it's funny that he's talking about mature titles and the 12 year olds playing them.

Parenting fail...

But seriously, the rating of the game doesn't matter, making them good is more important than anything else...

Just look at The Conduit, it's a mature, hardcore game, but it's total garbage.
milky_joe on 4 Jan '10
Well, don't release crap games, Sega. Madworld is good at best and the THOTD: Overkill is OK. But they're only average at best and hardly world class games. Mature games can sell if marketed properly, though this is a dillema situation on the Wii.

Having said that, except for the Football Manager and the Mario & Sonic games, do Sega's games sell that well at all anyway? They're hardly anything worth shouting about. Even Virtua Fighter is a 'niche' game, really, regardless of how good it may be
JuiKuen on 4 Jan '10
I think the way the industry has gone is a little sad really, it seems nowadays if it isn't Zelda, Mario, sports related or have guns in it it won't sell.
Athrun888 on 4 Jan '10
Would sell a lot more if they were coming to Xbox 360 and PS3.
wildhook2 on 4 Jan '10
Oh well, thats the slightest possibilty of Shenmue III on the Wii f**ked then Sad
burnsyboy2004 on 4 Jan '10
But knowing SEGA, they like releasing crap Sonic game after crap Sonic game after crap Sonic game.......give us Shenmue III dammit!!! (On the 360 please Smile)
burnsyboy2004 on 4 Jan '10

Doubt it. It'd just be polishing a turd really. Agree with Athrun though

I don't get why Nintendo have restricted themselves to family games. Goldeneye is a million miles away, now. They'd make more cash with mature games, but they think they're beyond that, preferring crap casual games instead which appeal to almost no-one but idiot families.

What? No they wouldn't. Wii Fit has sold over 20million copies, even COD can't compare with that.
Michael622632 on 4 Jan '10
Well, it could mean that they just don't want to make games with an "M" rating. It could still mean that they will make quality games (Or still and "still", thats a matter of opinion)

Biecush!: Games don't need an M rating to be Mature

What im sick of is everyone saying its because of Nintendo's plan to make gaming for everyone. It surprises me the amount of ridiculous idiotic comments like this. Lets look at the facts House of the Dead Overkill was a great game if a little flawed and an on the rails shooter, not something that appeals to everyone and had no advertising of any sort. Next lets look at Madworld which again was a good game, not great but it did have Wolverine voicing the main character which was pretty cool in my opinion, but had pretty lame advertising after 11' o clock ads just make no sense. And lastly Dead Space Extraction which again is good but, and where do I start. Its on the rails instead of being the port of the original or a proper horror/adventure title and it had no advertising at all, in fact when I went to buy it I had to search high and low in order to find it. Similar thing happened when I went to buy Muramasa Demon Blade which was being sold nowhere.

Someone pointed this out to me, out of the following titles which ones do you remember seeing advertised on TV and which ones sold the most.

House of the Dead Overkill
Madworld
Dead Space Extraction
New Super Mario Bros
Modern Warfare 2

Get the picture yet. Nintendo can only do so much theyre there to make money not save developers who can't be bothered to put the work in themselves.

Modern Warfare 2 is a 'crap casual game' too, so your point is? Don't ask for me other examples cos I really can't be bottomd laying it out for your.

I think dm makes a good point though too. Most devs put no effort in and then moan no one's buying their games. Only Capcom managed to get away with that with Resident Evil 4 but that's cos it was a great game to start with
JuiKuen on 4 Jan '10
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is an adult themed game that deserves to do well. I finished it about a week ago and I can't stop thinking about it, it's that good.

SEGA need to come clean. The Conduit failed because it is a terrible game. Mad World didn't do well because, despite its style, impaling people on spikes gets pretty old after a while.

It's not the mature audience that is the problem, it's simply a question of quality.
radiocat on 4 Jan '10
It's a shame to hear them say that as so few are offerering mature games but as long as games are good I don't care and that's the difference. Madworld, Conduit and House of the Dead all decent games but nowhere near as good as the likes of Little King's Story which puts on a very kiddie front and at the end of the day, which deserves to sell more? The one that made the most effort obviously. Even Sega's smily face Samba De Amigo was a failure and not because of it's image.
treesmurf 11 on 4 Jan '10
shame really. i agree with dm's comments about advertising though: can't remember seeing too much coverage of any of them tbh.

as for sega's sales: the conduit turned out to be an average title and madworld is fun in short bursts, neither game was going to be a no.1 seller.

i adored hotd: overkill though. it's one of my favourite games this gen and most wii owners should hang their head in shame that they didn't buy it: you can't expect good content if you don't support it.

looks like the devs won't get a shot at virtua cop for the wii now.

looking at the bigger picture, this follows on from ea talking about canning core support for the wii too. it looks like the industry is pulling away from the machine in terms of good games.

not that most of the dev community bothered anyway.
