What did you do this weekend? We sat down and played Bioshock for seven hours. Without moving. On both days. And loved every second of it.
Ok, so you could put our social lives into question at this point (we managed to sneak in a few beers, promise), but the explanation is a just one; Bioshock is one of the most immersive, extraordinary shooters we've played since, well, Half-Life 2 - and, unless you've got the motion sickness problems of a Turok Q&A; tester, you just have to play it.
It kicks off in 1960 with your plane crashing into the sea. After a cinematic bathysphere ride you arrive in Rapture, an underwater city where the world's greatest minds have escaped the constraints of ordinary man. But Rapture's doctors, inventors and entertainers all suffer from the odd mental flaw; cracks which became gaping holes once the city's extensive genetic mutation products, called 'Adam', went into production.
Rapture's inhabitants were consumed by mutation and their obsession with Adam soon turned into civil war; brother turned on brother, babies were strangled in cribs.
Now all that's left is a crazed and demented populace of 'splicers', changing and enhancing their twisted bodies with all the Adam they can get, and a city moodier than Bianca from Eastenders at that time of the month.
Rapture is the star of Bioshock and it's one of the most extraordinary and atmospheric game worlds we've ever explored. After what feels like an eternity of space marines, knock-off Middle-earths and WWII beaches, 2K's underwater city is a refreshing and disturbing change of scenery.
Every corner of the environment has been carefully considered to project a living world with an unsettling aura that only the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2 could deliver. Water - amazing-looking water - pours from cracks in the ceiling. Debris litters empty apartments and the shadows of rambling, mental inhabitants haunt the empty hallways.
The demented, well-acted (uncomfortably so) people of Rapture might not be as animated as Half-Life 2's cast, but they'll leave a bigger impression on your mind. Splicers scramble with fish hooks pointed at your chest, screaming incessant cries about their lost children. It's all very unnerving. Rapture's different districts back this eerie feel up too ranging from gritty, damp factories to underwater forests. This really is a beautiful looking game.
A compelling narrative and a well-realised and believable game world are already enough to create a classic, but over a length of time a good story isn't enough to keep you entertained. Thankfully 2K hasn't overlooked the traditional shooter elements of Bioshock, it is an FPS after all.
On its own Bioshock's gunplay wouldn't change the world of FPS; very quickly you have a revolver, shotgun and machine gun in your inventory but thanks to the limited supply of ammunition you have to continually hunt for, weapons feel a lot more empowering than in most other shooters.
You'll never have enough ammo to blast away with abandon. If you don't want to be left with the wrench (which, funnily enough, quickly becomes one of the most useful weapons in the game) you'll have to search every desk and spend every last dollar in the liberally scattered vending machines for bullets.
In the same way as Resident Evil, this ups the tension. To make it even worse, there's 16 different types of ammo in the game, three for each weapon. This lends even more weight to your decisions and where you're going to spend or conserve ammunition. We favoured conserving grenades and armour-piercing rounds for larger enemies, while the napalm, liquid nitrogen and electric gel ammo of the chemical thrower has vastly different effects depending on who you use it on.
Complimenting the usual array of guns are genetic powers called 'plasmids', similar to System Shock's psychic powers. Plasmids are controlled with the left trigger and bumper with weapons on the right. You soon find the electricity bolt, fireball and telekinesis powers, but the scope of these bolt-on upgrades is gigantic.
Plasmids are great to weaken and trick enemies, so a bit of back and fourth between guns and powers is essential. The interesting part is that you gradually create your own combat style. The Enrage plasmid tricks splicers into killing each other. You can use scenery to your advantage too; setting oil slicks aflame does the job a treat.
The deepest and most definitive part of the formula is the simple but involving RPG element. There are so many plasmid combinations and choices that a second play-through is guaranteed. Character and item building options are accessed via vending machines. Rarely-found 'Power to the People' stations give a one-time weapon upgrade ranging from damage increase to a larger clip size. Inventory stations - a nice idea - can similarly be used to build extra items such as ammo using bits and bobs scavenged from your journey.
Hacking also plays a major role and even these skills can even be upgraded through plasmids. Rapture's security system is immense and involves an entire network of cameras, turrets and flying bots that can be yours if successfully hacked. Oddly this is done through a complete rip off of Pipe Mania in a quick mini-game. You can even hack vending machines for cheaper goodies, which saves your wallet from taking a financial beating.
As for your plasmids and modifying tonics (which affect things like your max health and engineering attributes), you'll get those from special Gather Gardens - and the only way to craft them is by using Adam as credits. There's only one way to get it, and that's through the Little Sisters. And where there's a Little Sister, there's a Big Daddy...
Left alone these gigantic, diving-suited guerrillas are the most harmless inhabitants of Rapture. Cross them though, and you'll come face to face with one of the angriest characters we've ever encountered. You won't survive long enough to shout about it either.
Big Daddies guard the twisted, syringe-wielding little girls that harvest the only source of Adam in the game (there are two or three of them in each district, marked on the pause screen). Their relationship is both unsettling and touching at the same time. Little Sisters draw the Adam out of corpses, Big Daddies provide the backup.
These twisted little girls will skip, hold hands and beckon their metal protectors through Rapture's blood-splattered plazas, and the Daddy will give everything he's got to hug, protect and defend his tiny companion from anyone foolish enough to get too close. But if you want to bolster you're plasmids, you're going to have to piss him off.
The rules of gaming state that a hulking, heavily armed foe will be slower than a milk float with a flat. Safe in this fact, you'll likely unload a revolver in his face from 30ft down the hallway, and then shit your pants when he rushes towards you in a single, blurry dash before you realise you're still alive.
When you do die though Bioshock's death system brings you instantly back to life in a resuscitation chambers, meaning you can go straight back and continue the fight - with your enemy's health at whatever point you left it. Admittedly, this takes away some of the difficulty and tension of taking on the giants as there seems to be no real penalty for dying.
There's a dark story twisting its way through the world of Rapture and the game throws emotional choices onto your lap. Once you've defeated a Daddy and the Little Sister's crying next to the smoking shell, you've got a choice on your hands - save the little girl, taking one good thing from this dirty mess back to the surface, or harvest her, taking maximum Adam to tone your powers, but killing the child in the process. The consequence of either harvesting or saving a Sister only really affects what ending you see.
Like Valve's Half-Life 2, Bioshock doesn't rewrite the rules of first-person shooting, but it exceeds in both narrative, world and gameplay - which, despite how many times you may have fired a machine gun or built up your stats in the past, makes for more single, standout moments than we've had in a long, long time.
Moments like the countless twists and set pieces in Bioshock's fantastically well-written plot.
Or the huge variety of combinations you can play with, or the many interactions with the Big Daddies you'll have, like accidentally catching them in your crossfire and having to leg it across a whole level to escape their screen-shaking charge.
The world of Rapture is almost enough to make Bioshock an exceptional experience on its own. But the fantastic role-playing elements, standout scenarios and truly mental character encounters make it extra special. An experience of this calibre only comes around every few years and should be played by as many people as possible.
May I just say that I am a slightly envious ps3 owner. I think that this game looks very atmospheric and involving. Whilst it appears my hopes will be dashed of a ps3 port in the future I am holding on for the new premium 360 with hdmi and falcon chip before I invest. Hope it comes out sooner rather than later as Bioshock would fill a nice void at this time. Fingers crossed.....
Not really bottomd about the new Halo though, funny enough.

Aw Mark, we all know you love your PS3, and for good reason.
Still, its nice to see that impervious facade fade away, if only for a singular post.

Ooh controversial. Let's all finish our post with a dig at a different game in order to bait some response from the more "exciteable" 360 fans out there.
Blah blah blah. Yeah but Heavenly Sword looks poo!

Hey, I always speak from the heart and that is why I may sound like a sony fanboy sometimes. I'm really not though. I just know what I like - simple as. And I like the look of Bioshock. Bugger.

No digs were intended my friend, its a decent machine with a lot going for it.

Hang on, I'm only voicing a honest opinion and would rather not start a flame, thank you very much.
And it's fine to say Heavenly Sword looks poo - at least flies will enjoy it!
Also, I did'nt actually say that Halo looked poo - I just said I was'nt bottomd. Not for me. Surely that's allowed?

That nearly brought a tear to my eye. Sniff. Peace to the world!
Hey, and I too love the 360 (I'm a gamer after-all) but I have been one of the few unfortunates that have had to endure more than one failed machine in the past. When my last 360 broke I took it back to argos and exchanged it for the Ps3 that had just come out. I am more than pleased with the Ps3 but I love games and would prefer all consoles. The annoying thing is, I have the money to go and get a 360 tomorrow but once bitten twice shy. I'm just hoping that the new premium 360 with the new chip comes out soon so that I too can play the lovely looking Bioshock.
Pleased to hear that this game is every bit as good as i hoped it would be, knocking off time on friday can't come quick enough. Now, what did i do with my scuba gear?

I'm F*CKING GUTTED! I preorder a copy from Play.com cos it was gonna be coming with a free ltd edition faceplate, not only do I miss out on the faceplate, but I've missed the first shipment entirely due to popular demand!
Sod waiting until next week, 8am run to Game methinks, 2 weeks holiday starting Wednesday, without this game, my holiday will be wasted on doing things that are actually constructive.

You could always get a credit note when the other turns up, I suppose. Look on the bright side, at least you can play it. Not me. Sob.

Just bite the bullet and get an Elite on launch this Friday with BioShock included.
You know it makes it sense.
If I was in your position thats what I'd do, I'm kicking myself for being an early adopter. Theres no way i could justify owning two 360's to my missus.
That, and of course the obvious fact that owning two 360's would just be sad.

Sigh...I thought there was a detente in the relationship of 360 and PS3 fans until that last post! It's good to see the love being shared for Resident Evil 4 - I persuaded my 30 year old manager to rent it out for the Wii and she's loving it right now! (The only previous games she's played are Brain Training, Trauma Centre, Phoenix Wright and Wii Sports!) Proof of a quality game right there! I hope BioShock is up there with Resident Evil 4 - I'm buying an Xbox 360 on Friday just to play it! Halo 3 is this years' 360 console seller but I reckon this will be better. Played the demo and it immediately brought back memories of my fave FPS, Deus Ex! Can't wait!
Agreed. And as another "Taylor", I would like to apologise to the gaming world on his behalf, for his total lack of objectivity and punctuation.
I would also agree with many of the previous posters. I find Bioshock holds my excitement in a way Halo 3 currently does not. Though I eagerly await both games, until I see something unexpected and spectacular from Halo 3 (which could still happen), Bioshock will be my favourite FPS for 2007.
Feel free to attack my opinion, for it is simply that.
Holy s*it this game looks just f*cking amazing! I NEED IT! But my 360 is dead so just to play it i am going to buy a new P.C! Yep that is how much i wan't this game i am going to fork out £1800 on a bad mofo P.C.

Yes yes of course it will. Halo CE was a good FPS. Halo 2 was utter s**te. Halo 3 looks like Halo 2 with a lick of paint. Bioshock could be one of the best FPS ever made. From the reviews i have seen Bioshock sounds as if it is in the A-team of FPS with Half Life 2, Far Cry, Battlefield 2 and a few others. Halo is B grade at best. Bioshock is for grown ups and Halo 3 is for kids who don't know sh*t about games. If Halo 3 is still being played in years then i will deep fry my head and eat it!

You want *more* than an amazing gaming experiance?
Game looks great, demo was amazing, not surprised it's getting such high reviews. I agree, it'll be better than Halo 3 - But Halo 3 will still be a lot of fun... But it won't be a masterpiece.
i've been playing this game all day, and i've been psyched about it for a while now.
i've been playing it on medium and this isnt as appealing as i thought it would be. maybe they wrote such a high honors review because cvg probably devotes an entire room of dolby digital surround with a 70 inch plasma hdtv, which many of us couldn't even dream about. im just guessing. so all i'm saying is that if they indeed did use all the fancy home theater goodies, than those of us with lesser, more primitive machines should be cautious when reading this review.
and as for a rating so far into the game, i would give it a straight up nine.

I always order games from gameplay, they are good prices and have good stock. My copy should be here on thursday (only tomorrow yay), another reason why I love gameplay.
The demo was just awesome and ive been counting the days til release since i tried it! But then ofcourse someone screwed up again just as with LOTRO and now we scandinavians have to wait until the 31st to get the stupid game, only the collectors edition though which I was stupid enough to order. I just love it how they treat the collectors edition customers by having them to wait another week just because they paid another 20euro! If this happens to either Halo3, assassins creed of mass effect heads will roll!

I won their "come to our offices and play the Xbox360 before anyone else, and be on the radio at the same time!" competition back around October. I can assure you, it's not the case. Just the console, and an old school 32" plasma TV. But that's still better than my setup.
Hmm, i am guessing i am in the minority but gotta say my say.
Been playing games for 20 years and still cant get enough of them and looking forward to this.
However - does anyone else feel like this is an old game with new graphics?
-A.I. seems bad, enemies are in set routines when they start noticing you, many a time been making a lot of noise and they only come after you once you got close enough. Also number of times i got close enough to them in the range however they were other side of wall so they just shooting blankly at wall as their programing says i am there but not that there is a wall between us.
- wepons(man cant spell today) dont feel like they have much umpf, even shottie doesnt have that bang for the buck that i wanted even though it is powerful enough to 1 hit kill.
- set areas seen all to many times. Oil is conviently placed on floor where you are gonna meet a lot of bad guys so its like "yeah i get the hint"
- set enemy "pops", clear a room, walk into another room then out again and "oh what a shock more guys have appeared behind me that came from...hmm must have been hiding in the walls"
- corridor linear path fps seen many a time.
- condemned i found scary/edgy, this not so much
lol it sounds like i dont like it, i do, i just surprised no one else seems to be saying anything like this.
But then hype does have the habit of blinding the vision.
I actually DO agree, Demoki. Having now completed it twice (the first play-through taking my time to really explore - close to 40 hours), its starting to look like a much prettier, more atmospheric, deeper, and longer version of (dare I say it) Prey. It really isn't an "FPS 2.0". It's just a better-than-generic FPS, with Oblivion's "look-in-all-the-boxes, loot-all-the-corpses" dynamic. However, like Prey (which people conveiniently forget very highly on release), I unfortunately feel that this game will be almost forgotten about within a year.
I can hear the witch-burners at my door...
Maybe I'll save face and take back my earlier comment about Halo 3

Not completed the game yet, but I can't say that I am over-awed by it. Certainly not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination. Another over-hyped 360 game? Possibly. Bought an Elite and now I am tempted to take it back because I honestly prefer my ps3. Got Forza 2 free with it and that sucks too. The game is too easy (on pro!) and the car design is too cumbersome and time consuming. Halo better be good or the elite is definately going back in replacement for ps3 and wii games.
If Halo 3 is still being played in years then i will deep fry my head and eat it!
I love that line. With Bioshock and the soon to be released Orange box, 360 gamers have access to arguably some of the best FPS games created to date. I wonder how halo 3 will fair when it has these two to compete with - I don't doubt it will be hugely popular, but in terms of reviews, and the standards for a FPS people will have after playing Bioshock / Half-life 2, I can't help but feel some may see flaws with the game that they didn't before.
I was going to quote Demoki's post, but I'm not a fan of people who quote large posts then add a few sentences of their own at the end. I must say though, that I agree with the post 100%, and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels that way about the game. After seeing perfect scores from many reviewers, I was expecting this game to be flawless. Instead, it felt more like SS2 (system shock2) with excellent graphics (not that I could run it at a playable framerate on my crappy computer when it was maxed out graphically). In some ways it was toned down from SS2, such as the lack of a proper inventory system, both for yourself and when looting enemies. The "3 bubbles" that showed what dead enemies had on them just didn't seem as good to me, even if it was somewhat quicker.
I'd also have liked more direct character interaction. There is a lot of chatter through the radio and the recorded messages left about, but rarely are you face to face with another normal character. When it does occur, it is generally fairly brief, and usually constraints are in place like an unbreakable glass window between you. I think the way characters are portrayed in face to face situations in HL2 is much more convincing.
Overall it's still an excellent game. Though I personally would have rated Bioshock around 9/10, I can see why reviewers chose to give a higher, sometimes perfect rating - as there are so many games that (rather generously) score 9/10 but simply aren't anywhere near the standard of quality that bioshock is.
Since Bioshock has so many similarities to SS2, to me it just goes to show how ahead of its time the game (SS2) was. In the mid to late nineties we had so many highly unique and original games available. These days it seems like developers have taken the popular game styles of a decade ago, streamlined them, slapped a mediocre story in and finished things up with some nice shiny graphics. We can now have a single model in a game that has more polygons than all the levels put together from a 3D game 10 decades ago. It's a shame that for the most part gameplay hasn't been improved in the same vigorous manner. If it wasn't for games like Bioshock or Half-life 2, I'd have almost started losing faith in the games industry.

That was actually my first thought. 'Hey, this is a bit like a mix of Prey and Condemned!' thankfully, I loved both of those games, and this one is better than both in terms of atmosphere.
