Opinion: The CVG Memorial Christmas Rant

Steve Boxer on this year's number one
Annoyingly, I can't accuse you all of being idiots this Christmas. Even though, as you read this, you probably look more like idiots than at any other time of the year, what with your clothes a patchwork of gravy stains and melted Quality Street crumbs, bits of Brussels sprouts stuck between your teeth and indigestion contorting your facial expressions into a curious mixture of bewilderment and pain. But at least, for the first time in living memory, you haven't gone and made Need For Bleeding Speed the Christmas number one.

Come this way sir
EA's bland, generic multi-platform driving franchise was right up there in the unaccountable popularity stakes with the likes of Susan Boyle, Jade Goody and Alan Carr. Oh, and before you accuse me of being an idiot, I'm aware that FIFA 09 pinched the Christmas 2008 top slot. But three slots below it lurked the glowering, barely polished (but heavily discounted) turd otherwise known as Need For Speed: Undercover. And in previous years, whatever tat EA chose to slap in a box with NFS on the cover would sneer at us from atop the Christmas charts with all the inevitably of Simon Cowell's latest ventriloquist's dummy.

This year, you could get odds of 33-1 on NFS: Shift topping the festive chart, and with Modern Warfare 2 at 1/6 all bets, quite literally, were off: if you backed it at those odds, you're an idiot. And if you backed anything else, you're an idiot.

The irony is that Shift is the first decent Need For Speed game since the franchise appeared on the 3DO. And I can't even accuse you of idiocy for not buying it when it has finally come good, as you have, instead, chosen to spend your hard-earned, credit-crunched cash on the mighty Modern Warfare 2 instead. Which is the first truly merited Christmas number one in living memory. Bah humbug.

I HATE Alan Carr too.

And his boyfriend 'JLC' is also not funny at all.

your article is good, until you get to the last 3 lines and ruin it. what bulls**t! do you not read your own forums and the opinions of the users?

Ironically, MW2 is the biggest fiend of the xmas number 1 of all time. i'd rather see any NFS game at number 1 than that guff.

Modern Warfare 2 is the most over-rated game I have ever played.

The campaign is poor. It offers the same experience the very first Call of Duty did. The story is so disjointed I didn't understand what was really going on, just followed the waypoints until I finished the game on Veteran.

The multiplayer is so riddled with bugs and issues it has become a joke. When they patched it the other day more hacks started to appear. Making the longevity of the already highly unbalanced multiplayer put even further into question.

I hate it. I wish something else was the Christmas number one.

I still find it hard to believe that within the top 4 slots on Xbox Live we have COD4, WaW and MW2. Has the market truly become that stale? That people want to play the same experience year after year. Because lets face it, not much has really changed between any of these games since COD4 was released.

this article as a whole is abit over opinanated, almost egotistical. I wasn't even aware that christmas no.1's were even that important in games. How is a game based on war, nuclear destruction and death (i do like the game mind!) have any christmas merit.

And then you go on to ridicule two much loved comedians, who i can understand the dislike, to expect others too is abit naive. Then to top it off you mock the dead?! I wasnt a fan in any form but some respect, its christmas you sicko.

Being an "idiot" I bet a fiver on wii fit plus being number 1 (33/1 odds), came 3rd I think so little gutted there.

You must be f'ing joking..."MW2" as the most deserving game to be at the top of the charts this time of the year in 2009? Hah. Maybe if you: a) enjoy taking a forced ride on IW/Activision's meat stick, or b) if you only have console multiplayer expectations. The PC version was, and is, a disgrace and is most certainly not worth the asking price. For 5 quid I would pick it up. For 10 quid I might consider it. Anything above is an automatic no deal. That is how much I deem that P.O.S to be worth on the open market, and where it concerns pricing-vs-purchasing matters on my behalf I'm the boss. "MW2" for the PC = epic fail. Oh, and if that's all IW has to serve up for what once was a devout PC fanbase then I'll kindly ask them to GTFO; cease and desist with actively undermining and devolving the PC gaming scene. Cheers.

KFD: Exactly, look where FPS was born. The PC and the way it gets treated these days is just disgraceful.

I got MW2 and a newly repaired PS3 as my other one broke, and to my fortune my new one broke on Christmas day aswell, i have played some MW2 on my brothers xbox and i'm not impressed at all. I was looking more forward to playing AC2 and DiRT2 and U2 but i have to wait a couple of weeks now.

while i accept that Mw2 is a good game for those who like that kind of thing, i'm rather sick of having that and Uncharted 2 being shoved down my throat as the epitome of videogaming. I have only play Uncharted 2, which was a fantastic game, but paled in comparison to the incredible Assassin's Creed 2. All this obsession over mw2, when in reality its only a slight upgrade from the last. However, at least its not set in WWII....

We know your perfectly in your right to think MW2 sucks, but we've heard all about it's 'disjointed' campaign, buggy multiplayer, lack of support on pc... etc etc. But in the end you just need to accept that a f**kload of people still play and love it, and I think they far outweigh the number of people who bitch and moan about it at any given opportunity.

How about instead of moaning about that untill the end of time, try praising games that you think are better? It's a lot more constructive and alot less mind-numbing to read.

How about you contribute something useful and thus follow your own advice before lambasting others for expressing their opinion in a relevant manner given the verdict of this article? Besides, having numbers on ones side does not automatically render your position right nor worthwhile. What it does do is indicate that a certain amount of people either bought, were given or stole the game in question - nothing more. Sales figures should not be confused with quality nor veracity (although they sometimes overlap). Some may genuinely like it, others may feel neutral about it, while still others may be disappointed by it.

Regardless, from a PC perspective "MW2" is not a genre defying game. It's multiplayer option is an insult, it's pricing is a joke given what it offers SP and MP wise, and it's registered PC sales have been dismal which is well deserved. I'd be quite happy if IW never produced another game for the PC if this is the measure of what is to come. If they are so fond of the consoles as they have apparently proclaimed then let not I stand in their way. The sooner they leave the sooner new or already established talent can come in and replace them. Cool

Personally I think "Dragon Age: Origins" should be proclaimed "GOTY 2009" for the PC, and that its sales figures increase (which is what this article was really about; not the actual quality of the game). How about you? Care to follow your own advice or are you simply going to moan about others expressing their opinions?

I am happy to say I borrowewd a copy of MW2 for the PC and completed the single player in a couple of hours. COD4 single player is better. I didn't really understand what the hell was going on plotwise either. Man I would have felt ripped off if I had paid for it. I have kept this opinion quiet from my friend who lent it me Smile
