Nintendo trademarks 'Zii' (and 'Bii', 'Yii')

Wii for Zorro?
Nintendo's trademarked the word "Zii" in Japan, sparking all kinds of speculation as to what the bugger the platform holder could possibly be conjuring up.

The filing, which is in relation to video games and electronic devices, was filed on October 30, 2009 - so it's definitely too late to be a simple 'Wii' typo.

We've no idea what it is, but office speculation ranges from the name of the next Wii Zelda, something to do with Zorro and a dodgy pun regarding an Asian Entertainment channel. We're not very good at speculation, we know.

Via Siliconera

UPDATE: Nintendo's also trademarked 'Cii', 'Bii', 'Oii' and 'Yii'. Sounds like it's just covering its tracks to us.

could this be the name for the Wii 2 that is being talked about
Art Vandelay on 15 Dec '09
I doubt it's for the new Wii, Nintendo will want to stick with the name Wii because of it's brand power, much like sony have stuck with Playstation, I could be wrong though, after all the Wii could do with a bit of a power boost (or at least be capable of displaying in hd, doesn't bother me because I still use sd but it could be useful).
Athrun888 on 15 Dec '09
yeah but nintendo is there selling tool! the wii is merely the console name, ie, super, N64, cube or for the playstation it was numbers 2,3 etc and xbox use the 360! which they will also change to summit like the 720! I can't see them calling it the nintendo wii 2!

Could be trademarking the "Zii" to stop more of those cheap knock offs like the Vii... Who knows though, companies are always trademarking various things & names that often they never use.
Osiris25 on 15 Dec '09
i really dont think they had to trademark it, its not even a word.

the next wii will be called Nintendo H-Deee.
Cernunnos on 15 Dec '09
i really dont think they had to trademark it, its not even a word.

As opposed to Wii, which was in common usage before. Or Xbox, or Playstation, or Gamecube Smile

If you want to protect your brand identity, you have to trademark it.
Dajmin on 15 Dec '09
Theres a reson the Wii has it's name. Based on the 'We play together' line. Zii doesn't really mean anything so it's anyones guess as to what it could be.
kimoak on 15 Dec '09
A Z kind of looks like a 2...
milky_joe on 15 Dec '09
wii hd.
Sinthetic on 15 Dec '09
It could be a console for dyslexics.

but why trademark something that doesnt exist yet? its like they were afraid someone would beat them to the punch. Laughing
Cernunnos on 15 Dec '09
Surely it's just to deter those cheap knock-offs that trick the gullible out of their money.
GTCzeero on 15 Dec '09
It's most likely the knock-offs they're working against, but to Cernunnos - you need to move sharpish because all it takes is someone to get to the office first and you lose everything you've potentially worked on for the last year Smile

I can't imagine them losing the "Wii" part for a while though. Especially since their competitors have a single brand with just a number change each generation.

Maybe it's for the Wii Bii, using popular chat acronyms to welcome people to a new console.
How about the Wii Gii, designed for those trying to contact long-dead relatives?
I'd also suggest the Wii Lii, since a lot of the controllers are phallic already. Which works alongside the Wii Nii for the less impressively endowed.
Or the Wii Zii, a console designed for the fat gamer, named after the noise of their breathing when forced to actually move their lardy body.
Dajmin on 15 Dec '09
Well that can't do the Pii 'cos the fake ads have already been done (Channel 4 programme that I forget the name of).
Wozzakl on 15 Dec '09
Z looks a bit like a 2...maybe its the wii 2? Very original name nintendo, why not something good like the Nintendo defibrillator? u will be bringing that out in the near future i am guessing
The Sandbag on 15 Dec '09
Zii's already taken...

Please God no.
Balladeer on 15 Dec '09
Doesn't anyone else think that "Zii" stands for the new Zelda on Wii, as Battalion Wars 2 was subtitled BWii. The double "ii" could mean the number two as in the second Zelda on Wii.

It could also be a clue to the full title to "Zelda Wii"
