15 years of PlayStation

Quirky celebratory site says Happy Birthday to PSone
Blimey. The PlayStation is 15 years old today, and we still remember the first time we saw Tekken like it was last week. Makes you feel old, doesn't it?

Before December 3, 1994, when PSone launched, we remember having conversations of how Nintendo was going to batter games industry newcomer Sony out of the fight quicker than you could say "it's not 64-bit, innit".

Yet it was that grey box, and the PS2 after it, that ended up doing all the stomping. Godzilla-like stomping. And Sony's put up a nice little website to celebrate that fact. It's all in Japanese, but it does have some nice flash-based, mouse-shifty stuff going on. Or something. Just check it out.

It feels like only yesterday for me too. I vividly remember playing Ridge Racer for the first time and marvelling at the arcade-perfect gameplay.

However, I must admit to being a bigger fan of Nintendo in those days. The SNES and N64 offered me more of my type of games at the time.

How things change.

I actually played Ridge Racer on the PS1 very recently - it looks like absolute hell, but it still plays brilliantly. Namco really should revive Rage Racer - I absolutely loved that game.

I think my first memory of the PS1 was Battle Arena Toshinden - I was truly flabbergasted by it, it was a huge leap for all of us that were used to our Megadrive or SNES. Wipeout was another launch title that left me speechless.

Another great PS1 memory was getting FF7 on the day of release. We had a Special Reserve (are they still going?) open locally and they had Dave Perry instore....of course, we had no interest in him or his autograph - we just wanted FF7.

Was FF7 for me.

I remember my school friends talking about it and the things they were describing didn't really sound possible to me.

I didn't have a PS1 but that didn't stop me borrowing one and clocking FF7 1 borrowed disc at a time.

Cheers to 15years of amazing games on PSONE and PS2, especially 96-97 when I first got my machine. Tekken 2 and Wipeout 2097 blew my eyeballs away.

However screw Sony obsession that has developed in some people.

Aaaahh Christmas 94 was the greatest christmas i ever had, complete with V-Rally, Space Jam and Pandemonium! Very Happy

Still though, hands down, the greatest games of all time:
Abe's Exodus
Crash Bandicoot 2
Digimon World
Tekken 2
Pandimonium
Fifa 98
South Park Rally
Croc
Point Blank

Oh those were the days! Razz

Special Reserve went under AFAIK. The bastards screwed up pre-orders and refused to give refunds in my experience, instead offering credit. They borked my pre-order for Panzer Dragoon Saga and SF3, luckily I got them elsewhere at a premium.

Fondest memories of the PS1 was getting FFVII on launch... still my favourite game of all time. I base that on the experience at the time of playing it, other technologically superior games have come along but none have made me feel the same way. Wipeout was also simply brilliant. And Destruction Derby 1 & 2. And Jumping Flash. And RE. And Xcom:EU (although better on the PC as UFO). Ahhhhh...

Fifteen years... shish kebab on a stick.

Got mine on the day of release because it was my Birthday and I threatened to kill myself if my folks didn't buy me one.

i had f**k all but the demo disc for 6 months. Oh what fun I had with that T-Rex. It was a defining moment in games history.

I remember the Saturn was favourite to win the console war at the time and people ridiculed me for having a PS.

But who's laughing now eh... eh Wayne Armstrong of class 7JB. Hahahaha....ha..ha,etc.

Probably you..but f**k YOU ANYWAY.. f**k YOU!!

Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo are still the best games ever for me. (And Tetris, but that has nothing to do with Playstation)
