550,000 Wiis sold in a week

Thanksgiving goes down a treat at Nintendo HQ
Nintendo has said that it sold more than 1.5 million hardware units (in the US alone) during the week of Thanksgiving.

Pub quiz and gaming trivia fans might like to know that's 2.5 systems sold EVERY second. The figure includes Wii, DS and DSi sales.

During the week 550,000 Wii consoles flew off the shelves, thanks mainly to the recent $50 price cut.

In other Nintendo-breaks-all-world-records-news, a million handheld units were also shifted during the week (Sunday Nov. 22 to Saturday Nov. 28), a sales record that beat the company's previous sales record of GameBoy Advance units sold during Thanksgiving week in 2002, reports VentureBeat.

"Holiday shoppers are finding value in our products' prices, and through a game-play experience that is unique to Nintendo," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's marketing machine.

Will Nintendo's dominance ever end? It'll have enough money to buy the Isle of Wight soon.

440,000 PS3s sold too. Still in denial CVG?
wildhook2 on 1 Dec '09
Wow, that's quite a lot! PS3 has done well too. Why no figures for the 360? They would have been gloating had they actually done better than the PS3. Does that mean cos it actually sold less? Wink

Errr, CVG in denial, errr, check the front page wildhook, your beloved Sony's sales figures of 440,000 are there. Its just that Nintendo pumped MS and Sony combined, a newsworthy story on its own, i would say.

Still keep up the good work, Sony would be proud.

Sorry, Mr StonecoldMC, did not see that.

Still no number from MicroSoft...Strange.

thinking about this. How close is the wii to beating the sales record of the PS2. It can't be that far off surely.

Quite a few off Monkey, the PS2 sold 140 million worldwide and whilst Nintendo will come out on top this generation I dont know if they'll beat the PS2's crazy numbers.

Yeah. I have no doubt that the Wii will cream those numbers, but it will be a while yet. Just consider how long the PS2 has been available - the Wii would have to more than double the year-on-year sales of the PS2 to overtake it in 2009.

Yep, a masterstroke by The Big N. Ask nearly any female gamer out there (and there are plenty) about gaming or consoles and the Nintendo name is etched into their minds...
The market has changed, and girls/women play a big part in gaming. They don't give a damn about Solid Snake's muscular buttocks or Dante's silly hair anymore...
They want Kirby, Yoshi, Mario, AiAi etc. Believe me, I've heard their conversations on a Friday night in the local, and if its not Wii Fit, its DS gaming debates!
I try to mention Tekken 6 or MW2 and I'm told to get a life!!! Whaaat??
Yes, gone are the days of male only playground banter about which console is best or who the new hero on the block is...but I welcome all girls to enjoy our long cherished favourite pastime, Toad or no Toad!

is it true. Will girls finally find the t shirt with the mario mushrrom and the arrow pointing to my groin funny. nay whitty.

Probably not.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Dec '09
Its great to see Nintendo still posting amazing sales figures like this, also I am very impressed with Sony selling 440,000 PS3's in the same period.

As far as the 360 goes, I think the fact they are the only ones not boasting their sales figures speaks for itself. They sold less than Sony, and who wants to admit they are slipping into thrid place this close to the xmas sales period.

But give it a few weeks and the NDP figures will be in, and then the '360 sold less than PS3' stories will roll out.

I'm also from the IoW... naw Ok I just felt left out.

Southampton here! We stare at your island in jealousy from the shore. It's a nice island! Even though I've lived most of my 28 years in Southampton, I've only ever been to the IoW around 3 times.

Worth noting is the fact that the Wii sold 800,000 last thanksgiving, so sales have dropped quite a lot, year on year.

Accordingly to NPD microsoft shipped 836000 consoles in november last year. That's average of around 209000 per week. 418000 gives smaller number than sony's. Otherwise boys from microsoft would've been plastering their number all over internet.

Sony and Microsoft love figures don't they. It softens the blow and looks good on paper. The fact is, both companies have been losing money selling their respected consoles as a loss leader and relying on software sales to recover the losses. I'd tremble to see Sony's balance sheets!
You see, the genius of Nintendo has always been to make a profit (although the less said about the 'Cube, the better -it had potential, but was very poorly marketed!). I can guarantee you, that with the massive sales of the Wii, DS and their ever expanding software catalogue, Nintendo will re-invest largely, back into creating the 'ultimate' home family entertainment system for the next-next gen of machines. The Nintendo name has now become the 'first choice' for many households across the world, something their unfortunate competitors had dreamed of before the launches of their 'babies'. It is now a case of Xbox or Playstation becoming the 'second choice' machine sitting next to every little white box...
Hiroshi Yamauchi (richest man in Japan) is a genius and still owns a stake in much of Nintendo's intellectual property. These guys have been sleeping, eating and breathing games for over two decades now...long live the true innovator of electronic gaming...
