Deus Ex 3: "Only PC announced so far"

Eidos puts a dent in PC exclusivity rumours
An Eidos Montreal spokesperson has responded to rumours that Deus Ex 3 is being developed as a PC exclusive.

Communicating via the game's official forums, the spokesperson wrote: "Only the PC version has been announced so far." Fair enough.

Of course the Deus Ex franchise is certainly no stranger to the console world, having battered the series' reputation with the ever-disappointing Xbox sequel, Invisible War. So we fully expect to see number three on Xbox 360 and PS3.

And - more importantly - when was the last time anything was PC exclusive these days, other than an MMO? Times are changin'...

This was fairly inevitable. Not many of the old PC-only franchises can afford to stay on the one platform these days. Going on previous incidents there's going to be a lot of upset PC gamers over this. Not sure why - they're still getting the game.

I wonder if we'll see the other two released on XBLA/PSN?

Unless Eidos Montreal want to bankrupt themselves, I would say that it most certainly will get a console release.
The_Louce on 27 Nov '09
They could have told us when they plan on releaseing more info. Is it still planned for this year?

I dunno why I am geting so excited, it's probably not going to be all that tbh.

It's very close to reality though, not many games of this ilk remain exclusive to PC. Crysis being one of the few, but even the future of that series headed to consoles.

We're not going to be upset at there being a console version - that'd be stupid, we've no reason to wish that it be PC only. The part we get upset about is when the quality of the PC version is sacrificed to make it more console compatible. If they develop it for PC first and then do what they need to do to make it more basic for the consoles we'll all be happy - but if they dumb down the PC version equally because it's just a lazy port from the xbox version (as with DX2) we have every reason to be disappointed.

Did HL2:Ep2 feel dumbed down on the PC? That was developed alongside the 360 version and released at the same time.

RTS games will always be much more at home on PCs than consoles. I've played loads on both platforms and even Halo Wars with it's "we've designed this to be unique and built for console controls" it still felt like a modded PC game.

But even MMOs are dumbing down. In Everquest you have to actually read stuff and use the correct phrases to trigger quests. In Warcraft and other subsequent MMOs you just click buttons and reading what they actually want is optional.

It's nothing to do with console gamers, it's to do with becoming more accessible to more people. And that's not always a good thing.

I don't care whether a PC game is ported to the consoles or not. What I do care about is that a game released on the PC effectively takes advantage of the greater ability to tweak options and controls than the consoles offer. Use the plethora of tools and options put at your disposal developers! The game can start out on the PC or one of the consoles for all I care, just as long as the finished product has been polished and is something the developers can genuinely be proud of quality wise.

Speaking of which, please let "Deus Ex 3" be good! Please let it take after "Deus Ex" and not "Deus Ex: Invisible War"! That sequel remains to date one of my worst gaming disappointments.

Not all. BioWare still produces games that lead on the PC platform and it shows. It results in a much better end experience for the PC gamers. Valve is another company that leads on the PC platform. There may be others.

Which would seem to serve Omelette's point that there are PC gamers who won't be upset by it as long as a worthy PC version is released as well. It doesn't matter if they are developed along side one another, as long as a mediocre "one-size-fits-all" approach isn't adopted. That's where I stand incidentally.

I don't have high hopes seeing as the main guy is now at Disney, but the project lead has stated the sequel was a mess. Fingers crossed...

Did you deliberately misread his post? He's talking about titles being primarily designed for the 360 and then being lazily ported to the PC as an afterthought (and DE2 is guilty of this in my book).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_2:_Episode_Two

The first two episodes of Half-Life 2 were developed concurrently by separate teams

As you said, developed alongside. If the new Deus Ex game follows that model then it may not turn out so bad, but we'll see.

I don't think that's a really good example man as it's a pretty standard fps with no advanced control scheme needed. deus ex has a few rpg things to go with it and isnt so much a "blow away everything that moves" kind of shooter. That said the 1st deus ex was ported to ps2 and of course it didn't feel as intuitive as the PC version but it was a very good effort with almost nothing compromised. The sequel on the other hand really just made me feel sad.

The sequel was, IMO, an empty shell of a ghost of the original. It was a game I had anticipated with great enthusiasm and it was a big let down for me. While I played the game to completion and there were parts I enjoyed well enough, I found myself frequently comparing it to the original and found it lacking. Sure, it had improved graphics but so many other things just seemed watered down and paper thin - the lack of atmosphere was particularly noticeable. There was no proverbial meat on the sequel compared to the original as far as I'm concerned.

As others have noted, that just backs up my point, since it's an example of the kind of console version that PC gamers won't get upset about, because the quality of the PC version was not sacrificed for it. Valve are first and foremost PC developers if you ask me, if anything comes as an afterthought for them it's the console version.

That said, with the the PC version being announced first for DX3, it does suggest they're working on the PC version first, which is good news.
DancingOmelette on 27 Nov '09
Got to agree that as long as they dont dumb the pc version down, I'm happy with a console port being produced. As long as it's not the other way around. I have high hopes for this game.

I've been a member of the Eidos forums for a while solely to keep track of this game. And from what little information I've seen surface it doesn't look good. Or at least it has me a bit worried. Deus Ex is still my favorite game of all time, IW was a decent enough game if it weren't for the name Deus Ex on the box. I was so disappointed that I nearly wanted to cry while playing it... I was incredibly disappointed.

Sounds like you and I are in the exact same boat on this matter, Voad.

Btw, how have you been liking (or not,) "Dragon Age: Origins"? I'm going on three straight weeks of playing that game and I still haven't completed it, and breathing down the neck of a fourth week. Never mind replaying the game with different characters! Very Happy It's been a long time since that's happened - in fact, I think "BG II" was the last time it has taken me this long to finish a game from start to end without taking a hiatus in the process ("FO3" I'm looking at you).

I didn't get far into it before I had to stop playing... unfortunately my pc isn't as up to snuff as I thought it would be and just barely allows the game to chug along. It became unbearable during the Early War scene after you become a warden and so I am just waiting until I have the money to install a new graphics card. Hopefully that will do the trick but money is tight this time of year with Christmas coming and all. Have to save every penny so that I can get everyone the gifts they want... working overtime too. Wish I could play the game though... Sad

I didn't know that it was never announced as multiformat in the first place.

Also, not sure why Invisible War got such a bad rap. I have both games and they are both good, although I actually preffered Invisible War.

Sorry guys, just personal preference. Cool And as I said, still not sure why Invisible War got such a bad reception, it was/is a great game.
sonic_uk on 28 Nov '09
"Invisible War" might have come across as an okay game if I hadn't played it's glorious older brother first. Sure, the passage of time has not been kind to the aesthetic aspects of "Deus Ex", and the same rings true of its UI. That said, "IW" doesn't even reach it at the knees in terms of sheer daring bravery and brilliance when it comes to taking on a collection of the greatest and darkest conspiracy theories around. Not only does "Deus Ex" make the attempt, it actually manages to pull it off with great success.

Did you play "IW" before or after "Deus Ex"? I'm just glad I was able to return that game at a Virgin store at the time. "IW" was not worth my money when selling at a premium release price, and it certainly wasn't worth the 4-5 year wait IMO.
The_KFD_Case on 29 Nov '09
Yeah I did mate, perhaps thats why. I bought Deus Ex after, but as I said although they are both good I just preferred IW. There was just something great about the atmosphere in that game.
sonic_uk on 29 Nov '09
The music in Invisible War is great.

Weeell, it's actually not so bad as a standalone. I remember the intro excited me on release.

That is all.

I really, really want this game to be amazing, but I think DE set the bar too high, with HDTP it doesn't even look all that dated... even the multiplay is still fun :B
