Legendary Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto has explained why he thinks not every game "needs to be 3D". Which is convenient timing, because his new side-scrolling Mario just released this weekend.
Speaking in the latest issue of Nintendo Power, he said: "I don't think everything needs to be 3D, or that just because we're seeing more 2D games now, that everything's going to shift back to 2D.
"Instead, I think that what's going on is that people are realizing the benefits of a 3D game, and at the same time, remembering what the benefits of 2D games were," he said.
"When going 2D, you need the courage to not be so attached to visual appearance of the games and to really pursue the gameplay experience."
Good news then, if this is indeed indication of more oldschool 2D Nintendo games (and not Wii Music 2 on DS).
Im in full agreement. The worst thing they ever did was go 3d with Mario. Just because we have 3d dosn't mean every game should use it. A 2d game with a 3d background can be just as pleasing to the eye.
He's only saying that because the Wii can't do 3D. lol
Erm....
The last time I looked RE4+, Metroid Prime, Grand Slam Tennis etc, etc were all 3D. Perhaps my mind was deceiving me....
Maybe he is saying this because it is true and practically every true gamer believes this too. Many games are just better in 2D. Look at sonic for instance, the 3D versions are just rubbish as they are just too confusing to control in 3D and the graphics loose their charm. Worms 2D is a fantastic multi-player game but Worms 3D did not work in the slightest as it lost all its precision. Even GTA is great in 2D and has a lot more character than the 3D versions. 3D is very good for some games and really adds to the immersion, but for other games the 3D is just a gimmick and ruins the gameplay completely.
The worst thing they ever did was go 3d with Mario.
Hmm one of the greatest games of all times was the worse thing they could of done? I think you must be thinking of Sonic!

yawn...
He's right though, 2D games still have a place in the gaming world and recently I've been enjoying lots of old snes games and 2d all over again so I'd be happy to have a few more new examples.

the less said about that tarded comment the better.

absolute b******s, mario 64 and mario galaxy are sublime, as much as i f**king loved mario world, galaxy is the best mario game by a thousand miles.
I still do think we should have Super Mario World made into 3D or at least done like how Metroid: Other M is going to be. I don't mean there should be first person sections, just maybe some perspective switching? Or they could just do it like New Super Mario Bros?....
Which I am enjoying a lot at the moment. So much that I've gone back to playing some other 2D platformers like the DKC games. Even my mum's loving the new Mario. She hasn't played a Mario game (or any videogame really for that matter) since Super Mario All Stars. And it did show at little
Super Mario Kart may be out THIS Friday here in Europe if Wikipedia can be trusted in this instance. Both Eurogamer and Gamespot (where EG got the news from) have reported this.
(Super Smash Bros and Pilotwings have been available to European and Japanese gamers, but not to US ones. They only just getting them now).
2D gaming is all well and good but does it hold a place alongside 3D games today? For me, not really.
2D is great for a nostagia trip or a good challenging game experience but not much else. Practically every genre is better in 3D both aesthetically and interactively.
For me 2D has a future but only as the odd platformer or fighter as these are the two genres where 2D still holds it's own.
Just to clear something up, when he says "3D" does he mean your typical 3D in the way that CoD is for example or does he mean the pop out of the screen 3D that we have seen a lot of games utilise recently? Either way there is room for all, look at the opinions here alone, some people prefer 2D and others 3D and nobody here can say there opinion matters any more than somebody else's opinion, in my opinion.

I am pretty sure he means 3D as in typical 3D games. If he means 3DTV style games then there is no debate as there is no room in gaming, tv or film for that as it is just rubbish!
Also although I agree that opinions are just that and therefore no one person is necessarily more correct than anyone else. I would love to meet someone that thinks that the Sonic and Worms games are better in 3D than 2D.
i didn't mind worms in 3d. But your right it just wasn't as good.
not as bad as recent 3d sonic games though, aside from the day sections in sonic unleashed (which might as well of been 2d) and Sonic and the secret rings. Which did pretty much the same thing Nights did. It was in 3d but followed a 2d path.
really looking forward to project needlemouse though. hopefully this resurgence of 2d platforming will continue.

In whos opinion? Certainly not mine. 'Greatest game of all time'?!!? You must be joking...
Mario 64 was one of the worst games I've ever played. Running around a barren landscape with impresise clumsy controls and a stupid voice over that sounds nothing like Mario is not my idea of fun. If that sort of thing floats yer boat then fine, I guess you're easily pleased and good luck to you, but please don't start quoting for the rest of us as everyone has a different opinion on what is good and bad and imo Mario 64 is very bad indeed. If you want a good Mario game I suggest you try Super Mario World on the Snes, or any other 2d Mario outing on the Snes or original Gameboy for that matter.
As for Sonic, yes I agree his recent efforts have been a bit crap, but the original Sonic Adventure was a great 3d game. It's just a shame they don't make more like that nowadays instead of using the Sonic Adventure 2 engine for all their games. Anyway, this article is not about Sonic, its about Mario hence my comments.

Wow who's got thier pants on to tight today. You'll find I said that Mario 64 was ONE OF the greatest games, and that's been well documented around the world. And its laughable that you think I wouldn't of ever played Super Mario world etc. And I wasn't quoting for you I was making a Joke about sonic but you took it so serious and its very funny that you rant about Mario 64 and then comment on how good Sonic adventure was. Possibly the most pointless 3D platformer with little to nothing happening in it and tried its best to be Mario 64 for dreamcast. Oh how people make me laugh somedays!
