Micro Machines

Small on realism and originality, big on fun
Small on realism and originality, big on fun

Once upon a time, spending Saturday afternoon in your bedroom sending 'ickle cars crashing around teddy bears and building blocks would have made you a complete pre-pubescent loser. Then, almost a decade ago, videogames made it cool.

The motors in question were MicroMachines, the drivers were tiny toon nutters with attitude and for several years thousands of us finally found a cheap conduit for having a laugh together without rubbing Vim into your fat mate's eyeballs.

Now the MM series' is back with its first next-gen foray, and it's a return to the simple handling, cartoon looks, silly settings and uncomplicated gameplay of before. The only controls you need worry about are a couple of buttons and your direction, so pick-up-and-play isn't an issue. But because of the viewpoint, you'll only be a great player once you've learnt the tracks. Then all you need is a few mates and as many controllers for a great night in. Cool.

GT3-type racer comparisons are pointless, since the MM series was never really about ultra-realism and amazing graphics anyway, instead putting emphasis on the simple pleasures of party-style gaming. That still holds true in this latest instalment, and it's still a good laugh. We don't really rate the new Bomb Tag game as it feels too slow, though.

Verdict
If you're up for some no-nonsense fun, this should do it. The concept may be simple and a bit retro, but it's satisfying all the same.
