Far Cry 3 is in development and looking "pretty exciting", an Ubisoft scriptwriter has told Official PlayStation Magazine.
Speaking at a recent Avatar junket, OPM asked Ubisoft scribe Kevin Shortt if he was working on a third Far Cry title and instead of the usual "no comment", the mag received a refreshing response...
"No I'm not," he replied honestly. "But I know the team are and what I've seen looks pretty exciting." Far Cry 3 confirmed then, just like that.
Other than that blatant response, it's mostly guess work so far on what we should expect from Far Cry 3. Last year though narrative designer Patrick Redding did mention that a sequel would likely retain an African setting, though he also mentioned Antarctica as a possibility.
It's also probable the third game will be based around an improved version of the Dunia engine, OPM points out, which was specifically built to handle complex real-world physics within a sandbox environment.
Games shouldn't take "effort". They should be fun. Far Cry 2 was far too much work. Drive here. Kill him. Drive all the way across Africa. Oops I have Malaria. Take tablet. Kill these guys at a road block. Go to objective. Kill guy. Go back down same road. Oh the roadblock is repopulated. Get back to town. Rinse and repeat for 15 hours.
I hope Far Cry 3 has better controls than 2. All they need do is copy the control feel of Left4Dead, Halo or Modern Warfare. I loved the last game but gave up very quickly because of this issue. When will developers learn that unless the gamer is comfortable with the controls it's near impossible to enjoy a game.

I 2nd that + don't forget the s**tty endings ( both sucks ) .. and did i mentioned the driving ? Fcking painful using a keyboard ....
This has to accomplish a lot to live up to Far Cry 2. Some suggestions:
- Give the player an incurable disease again, which can debilitate you without warning at any moment. That was fun, what a fun and not completely moronic gameplay mechanic. - Require the player to spend time digging bullets out of themselves after most fights. - Enemies should always re-appear in previously cleared areas. Everyone loves this despite what they say. - Make guns fail for no particular reason, especially those that fire explosives. There was nothing more fun than lining up a lovely shot with a rocket launcher only to have to bolt for your malaria-ridden life when it landed at your feet and started spinning around instead. - Stealth should be promoted as part of the game, but enemies should be able to see you from miles away no matter how stealthy you try to be.
Finally, the Collector's Edition should include a fork which must be jammed into each eye before and after playing it. Also, some actual malaria.
FarCry 2: Drive across lots of places that look excatly the same.
Get shot at everytime you come across someone.
Shoot back.
Gun breaks.
Die.
Someone picks you up.
Malaria kicks in.
Die of malaria. =====================
I'd rather watch the Uwe Boll FarCry film than play FarCry 2 again. I actually requested that the person who got it for me for my birthday personally apologised to me and asked them to write a 200 word essay on why you shouldn't give people games that SUCK BALLS.

I agree so much with this. Case in point is Resident Evil 4 on the PC. The controls sucked so much the whole game was ruined and I've been put off the series for life.
I thought Far Cry 2 was one of the best, most imaginative FPS I have ever played. The story was superb and I always felt totally immersed in the game, story and environment. Genius. If anyone thinks otherwise it's most likely because they were too busy playing another COD or Halo to try something truly original.
Yawn. Back to bed children. Don't forget you ABC of FPS gaming book to read before bedtime. I'd hate to have a gun break on you so you actually panic one in a while. Nah, keep things nice on boring...sleep well.
Far Cry 2 is actually a very enjoyable game if you can get past the first hour. It takes roughly an hour or so to get into its groove, after that it becomes a very rewarding experiance. Much like the first time you play a metroid game, the first hour is always tough for various reasons. You should have stuck with my friend, it's still one of the few games around today that are worth their price tag...i would advise you to pick it up again now that it's cheap.

The only sleeping I did while playing this game is because it was the most boring and repetetive FPS I have ever played.
Every single mission was the same thing, it had nearly no variety. You spend too much time driving for miles through the same environments. If they take on board all the criticsm this game got, then Far Cry 3 could actualy turn out good.
Respawning enemies at check points were the biggest failure of this game, along with getting from A to B to start some of the missions, it could take 10 minutes of driving through hordes of respawning jeeps just to start a mission. And that's if your transport didn't roll over or burst into flames while you're trying to get there. Plus mulitplayer was kinda crappy. And repetition was a big problem for me.
This game had a lot of problems. It done some things well, and other things were just poorly implemented.
Well lets hope they hang an actual game off of this engine and not some sub-standard FPS that was boring (even after giving it 2-3 hours). The engine was/is incredible the game was really just bad hence why it went bargain bin in about 2-3 months.
FC2 started off with so much potential, the fire ideas were excellent for example, but the game was so frustrating it was unplayable. Driving for 15 minutes to a mission only to be shot and killed after the 3 guard point on the way, dying then having to start all over again, sometimes after hours of play. Please sort it out as this REALLY ANNOYED ME and probably thousands of others.
I'll give it a miss if it's anything like the second game. - One of the most tedious and over-rated pieces of software i've ever had the misfortune to waste my hard-earned money on.
I have to say I never even finished the 2nd game. In fact after installing windows 7 I havent even touched it. It seemed pretty good for the first couple of hours but then as others have said it just got reptitive and as such boring which is a real shame.
They need to fix the game to not make everywhere look the same, not have stupid checkpoints everywhere which constantly respawn in ten minutes, more variety of vehicles and people and animals.
Create it like the open world game it should be with amazing realism based on a gta styled world with everything being so much more realistic. Also a point to note, please if you decide to do factions again at least make it so that they have effects depending who you work for.

I had this game pre-ordered but canceled it after discovering it came with SecuROM of a similar vein to what was on "ME" at the time. Based upon the follow-up reviews and comments it seems I may not have missed out on too much. Ah well, it did look good though I do think the malaria idea is crap considering you can take medication that treats it in two weeks or less. Now if it was ebola...
I loved the original Far Cry, but there was just something that bugged me whilst trying to play Far Cry2. The way you moved your character around and the general 'feel' of the game just felt completley awful to me. I havent even bothered to get much further than the first handfull of missions up to after getting the malaria medicine. There was just nothing to really grab me and make me want to keep playing. Annoyingly having to traverse from one side of the map to another just to do a 'kill everything and everyone' mission just annoyed me. Also I dont know if it was me but enemeies felt like they ate bullets for breakfast.
"Hopefully they fix Farcry like they did Assassin's Creed." That's exactly what was about to say. Far Cry 2 had so much potential. That, and it was GORGEOUS. The haters are exaggeratinga bit though, it's a flawed good game. Not a piece of s**t.
Personally I thought FC2 was great - the graphics are excellent, the story and setting were quite original and I never had a problem with the controls. I wonder how many people who didn't like it were playing on consoles? Of course it wasn't perfect, but that just means FC3 is an opportunity to improve on something that was already good to begin with.
Can't believe all the negative comments Far Cry 2 is getting. I thought that game was amazing. One of the most immersive games I've ever played. It had its flaws but I found it so much more interesting than a lot of other shooters.
I might be alone but I for one can't wait for Far Cry 3.
We all have different tastes but to say FarCry was a poor game is ridiculous, just as it would be for me to say it about Halo which wasnt't my cup of tea.
I agree with Loz01 and MrStillwater, i thought the game was great and really made you think about how to go about your goals if you played it on the highest difficulty. The respawning AI was its only downpoint from my point of view. I liked the driving, you guys do realise it was set in Africa hence the not so populated landscape? Then again i guess some people just want all the games set in the same grey place it seems.
As for those complaining about driving from oneside of the vast map to the other, why didn't you simply use the coaches? they transported you instantly from one side of the map to the other and meant that the the goal was never more than a couple of minutes drive away.
I really enjoyed farcry 2 myself, but yeah i can see why it frustrated people. Didn't really bother me. I did find it amusing how a lot of people i've seen talking about the game drove everywhere and didn't realise you could get a bus
Keen to see how far cry 3 turns out! hope there isn't an Antarctic setting =/ why do sequels seem to be going Antarctic when they run out of ideas?
I liked the driving, you guys do realise it was set in Africa hence the not so populated landscape? Then again i guess some people just want all the games set in the same grey place it seems.
I understand that it would be as populated as othr games in city and western type environments but it would have been nice to have had more than just soldiers running rampant after you. Even in those types of war situations not all the civilians leave which I felt was a downside because places which should have been bustling with life, for example the ceasefire zones, had no atmosphere.
I actually played thru' FC2 on my PC, and while there were lots of stuff to enjoy, the terrain was never open, as it was in FC1 (probably "Dumbed down for Console™" as everything is these days.
I greatly enjoyed picking off long range targets with the bolt-action sniper. There was much to love about combat in particular.
The level(s) however, were dreadful - none of the "approach as you will" from the first one. You had two options and were appropriately funnelled towards trouble. Not bad compared to many other games - just bad compared to FC1.
The repetitiveness was by far the worst. Oh my #!#! the constant driving around, it felt like stuff was thrown in deliberately just to end up with more hours of gameplay, instead of a shorter game that was really enjoyable. I can understand why "20 hours of gameplay" on the box sounds better than "It's Modern Warfare - don't sneeze, you'll miss it!" - but still. We expected more, and we had the right to, based on the first game.
What ever happened to the "epic conflict" between two sides? If you worked for faction A, you NEVER met someone from faction B - every single person you met was an enemy. Roadblocks that repopulate faster than I can finish a cigarette!?
What killed FC2 and made it such a pain (punctuated by moments of sheer joy) was the complete lack of "suspension of disbelief" - it didn't feel "real". Even the weird goings on in FC1 didn't feel "not realistic" - they were Aliens and all, but - believably so. FC2 created a sterile and un-living world for us to play in. That's fine for the console kiddies that have been brought up to believe Halo is actually a good game - but for the PC user, used to FC1, Flashpoint, and so on - it's just not cutting the mustard.
The best way to hype FC3 would be to say "We're sorry, we've shot the guys who made the decisions for FC2!" - that, or "We'll make a PC-version first, give you that, and then ruin it enough so it'll fit on the consoles".
Oh how I enjoy console gaming, but oh how I hate what the consoles are doing to games. So few ambitious releases now are actually using the PC, because they have to fit the games onto consoles.

I might be alone but I for one can't wait for Far Cry 3.
You are not alone. I for one am keen on seeing what Ubisoft can conjure up with "Far Cry 3". I just hope they don't gimp it with DRM for the PC and incorporate feedback in the manner they appear to have done with "AC2".
One thing that really ruined it for me were the respawning checkpoints. I can understand if you go back the next day, but a few minutes later and they were all freshly staffed with guards again. Sometimes you wern't even out of sight and they would respawn.
The other thing that really annoyed me was the way you would be chased by guards. It was the same pattern every single time. Drive past a checkpoint not bothering to stop, get chased by jeep with two guards in. Eventually after them following you across the entire map you would get fed up and stop to deal with them. They would stop, one would get out and the other would shoot you from the gatling gun on the roof. I mean, they could have put a bit more intelligence in their A.I for gods sake! Also, even if you were crounching in the grass with the stealth suit enemies would still see you a mile off before you even knew where they were.
Can't believe these issues were never patched, especially the respawning. The atmosphere is really great though I must admit. It really does feel like you're walking around in Africa. Lets hope the sequel is a lot better because I had really high hopes for this game and was let down in a big way.
Yeah the respawning checkpoints and a Hilux-patrol in every darn part of the road is what killed the game for me, too.
And the game was basically a maze of roads. Didn't have a sense of adventure, at all. Just endless swarms of enemies that respawned immediately you got out of draw distance.
And the save game system was a pain in consoles. Why oh why can't console games have just a normal "save whenever you please" system?!

You bunch of ungrateful bast**ds. I'm sure the developers would like to apologise personally to each of you who despise their products for spending a couple of years and millions developing them for you. If you don't like it, don't play it.

Ooh great. When they're doing that, could they send me some cash as well?
You can't please everyone. People say they don't want easy, casual, set-piece heavy games so when a hard, hardcore and very open FPS comes around everyone moans that it's not casual enough.
Stealth worked if you waited until night, you could take out a whole base with the silenced sniper rifle and silenced smg without anyone knowing. The driving to and fro? That's half of GTA and it was a good way to show off the beautiful environment they created. Not to mention you could just get the buses, which save when you get on them too.

Yeah, because I'm sure they did it solely out of the goodness of their hearts. Oh wait. You still had to pay for this game, did you not?
I put about 10 hours into Far Cry 2 because it was one of the first games I bought on my PS3 and I had lack of options. It was rubbish whatever way you looked at it and had no relation to the first quality game.
Yeah, because I'm sure they did it solely out of the goodness of their hearts. Oh wait. You still had to pay for this game, did you not?
Absolutely. I feel that people who b*tch and moan when it comes to free DLC are ungrateful b*astards, but when you pay £40 for a game and don't enjoy it you have all the right in the world to say so! Bring back GAME's 10 day return policy, I say!
I would not even consider buying if they don't include a server version right away..we waited for year or more for the farcry2 server and still have crap support/info on it.
Well I like many thought the concept of FC2 was good. Unfortunately for me it fell down as a game when they failed to improve on the wonky AI. A lot of hype before release was that you were able to silently aproach targets/missions in different ways. What a load of pap, I tried doing one mission sneaking in the dark several times from several angles and ended up in exactly the same firefight everytime. Boring. At least the firsy far cry was fun inspite of it's wonky AI. Far cry 2 took away the fun and left us with nothing.
Far Cry 2 was a game that I wanted to like, but just couldn't... Assassinating people is always fun in games, unless you have to drive across Africa and kill 100 people at roadblocks just to get to your target each time.
Oh, and I love the way they gave the host the ability to remove people from Ranked games, so whenever the host wasn't at the top of the game he could just kick everyone above him. That was bloody priceless, trolling my way through multiple games getting owned by fagott grenade launchers, to finally get the game where your doing well only to be kicked by some little gimp who's only hosted the game so he can rig it.
FC2 was great, except for the game breaking bugs. AND the fact that it took Ubisoft 7 months to patch it. AND that the patch only fixed new game saves, so someone like me with 35 hours of progress was stuck because of a bug. Ubisoft was so F'ed to not fix the problem right away.

So you must love every game ever developed then? Not one game you found boring or a game mechanic you did not like after purchasing it?
Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. It's this mentality that's lead to easy as sin games, that are just an exercise in going through the motions rather than any amount of challenge in them.
There is nothing wrong with having to put some effort into playing game. Sure, it shouldn't be a labourious grind-fest either, but neither do I want it a barely interactive movie, that has me as mainly a spectator that has to 'Press A' at appropriate times.
FC2 wasn't bad, the problem was that because the enemies respawned it took you ages to get from one place to the other and you often ended up half dead before you even got to your next mission. And the AI was really dumb close-up but an amazing shot from half a mile away.
It would've been far better if each firefight was longer and harder, but you only needed to clear the camp once. Or a fight between the factions so that if allies controlled an outpost you could just drive through, but if the enemy held it at least you had some friendly guns to help you.
In terms of being really atmospheric and utterly beautiful to look at, FC2 was spot on. The story was alright and the voice acting was good. It was in-character all the way and sometimes you could start to care about your rescue buddies. If FC3 can fix those issues I'll be interested.
