UPDATE: The official press release is out:
Friday 13th November/...Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, announced today the highly anticipated street date for FINAL FANTASY XIII. This latest project in the multi-platinum FINAL FANTASY series promises to be intensely compelling and will be available for both the PlayStation3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft on 9th March 2010.
FINAL FANTASY XIII marks the dawning of a new era for the celebrated series, bringing the series to multiple hi-definition consoles simultaneously for the first time in its history. Expanding upon the rich tradition of the series, producer Yoshinori Kitase (FINAL FANTASY VII, X, X-2), director Motomu Toriyama (FINAL FANTASY VII, X, X-2), character designer Tetsuya Nomura (FINAL FANTASY V, VI, VII, VIII, X) and art director Isamu Kamikokuryo (FINAL FANASY X, XII) combine their creative vision to deliver the latest masterpiece in the FINAL FANTASY universe. Additionally, Masashi Hamauzu (FINAL FANTASY X, DIRGE of CERBERUS -FINAL FANTASY VII-) presents a sweeping soundtrack while movie director Takeshi Nozue (FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN) and his team of artists adorn the game with seamless cinematic sequences of unparalleled calibre.
"FINAL FANTASY XIII promises to be a huge event in the 2010 gaming calendar," said Phil Rogers, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe. "This is truly a landmark title, arriving simultaneously for multiple platforms for the first time in the history of the series. We are also immensely proud to be able to bring the game to the European and PAL audience much earlier than was publically anticipated."
Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Leona Lewis has come on board with Square Enix to provide the theme song for FINAL FANTASY XIII. The song is entitled "My Hands," and is featured on her highly-anticipated second album ECHO (J Records/Syco Music) set for release on November 16th. Leona Lewis took the music world by storm with her 2008 6x platinum debut album Spirit which features her chart topping, biggest selling single of 2008 "Bleeding Love," and mega-hit "Better In Time."
"When Square Enix approached Leona about including her song, "My Hands," in FINAL FANTASY XIII, she was honoured to be partnered with such an iconic and groundbreaking video game series," said Tom Corson, EVP/GM, RCA Music Group. "Leona is a natural fit with the game's powerful themes and strong female protagonist. We're delighted to be part of this effort, bringing great musical artistry to FINAL FANTASY XIII which is a riveting and dynamic gaming experience."
Introducing new worlds, memorable characters and extraordinary stories with each new instalment, the FINAL FANTASY series has continued to reinvent itself over the last two decades and has shipped over 85 million copies worldwide. The series is defined by a constant evolution, offering nothing less than the finest creative vision, graphical quality and gameplay system of its generation with every instalment, and FINAL FANTASY XIII will be no exception to its legacy.
Let's hope to see some more strategic staggering, that period is now so chock full of AAA titles there isn't a hope in hell they will all get the attention they deserve.
Knew it. The big games always come out just after my birthday. Still that Leona Lewis just gets everywhere these days. Much improved timing on the release it wasnt so long ago that we in europe would have to wait over a year for a new FF from its first release. And hopefully I wont read any plot spoilers from the Jp release till then.
I know it said 09.03.2010 but here's something quite important:
The US write their dates Month/Date/Year so 3rd September (a Friday by the way).
The UK write their dates Date/Month/Year so 9th March (a Tuesday).
Which one is it? I know it was for the European Blog but still could be an American announcement with Europe tacked on. Would they really release in the same month as some mammoth titles? Can you confirm one CVG?
Ironically the US date would make it a traditional UK release, while the UK would make it a normal American release.
Even though I only own a 360, I'll be swamped for the first few months of 2010. I'm glad I've chosen not to buy a PS3 until late next year, although that would change straight away if Sony release that white FFXIII branded Slim over here!
'We at Square Enix hope you enjoy product fullest to soul transending. Rushed not translation of scriptual vocalisations and with 20% more intensity. Happy wish. Konichiwa.'

Swamped! I actually hope that a few of these games get pushed back even further, especially with the confirmation of a March release date for FF13.
As a multi-console owner, all I can do is laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of early 2010. In all my 36 years, I have never seen a software line-up as massive.
Thank god I am not into Mass Effect (it does look like an amazing game for fans of the first), otherwise I'd be knackered.
Anyone for a multi-platform list? In no particular order:
Jan to May 2010
Alan Wake MAG Bayonetta Splinter Cell Conviction GOWIII Mass Effect 2 FF13 GT5 Bioshock 2 Just Cause 2 Heavy Rain (?could be summer?) Command and Conquer 4 Battlefield Bad Company 2 Alien vs Predator MGS Rising The Saboteur Dead Rising 2 Dante's Inferno.
As has already been said, early 2010 is looking like one of the greatest / most punishing periods for game releases in recent memory. My two most anticipated games out within 2 months of each other - sweet!!
I just came back from a visit to Tokyo where I was able to view an extended demo for this game being displayed on a 6,000,000 yen television in Akihabara. The screen was huge, at least 72", and the graphics were amazingly smooth and detailed even close up. Square Enix breaks new ground with every FF release.
I honestly dont know how Im going to afford all of these Games. Seriously!
I know what you mean. I was thinking the same (and those for the Wii too). I think realisticly I won't be able to get my PS3 till Xmas next year so at least I'll have most games I want for it going cheap by then.
As for this games, that blonde guy looks like Tom Cruise
Sony should move some release data ...release Mag in January ,WKC in february ,FFXIII in march in occident and in Japan GT5 ,in april Gt 5 in occident ,God of War should go to may ,and then Heavy Rain in June ....that would be the wise thing to do but that would mean delaying GOW3 two months.Aside from these AAA mega-beasts theres many more AAA titles from third party as Brink ,Battlefield BC2 ,Bioshock 2 ,Darksiders ,Resonance of Fate ,Star Ocean IV etc ....
