Activision's officially detailed the first day Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales in North America and the UK, in which it says was the biggest entertainment launch in history.
In its first 24 hours Modern Warfare 2 racked up $310 million in sales in the two regions, says Activision.
That's 4.7 million copies, the company estimates - not far off the 7 million global sales predicted this morning.

"The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium," said Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith.
"The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers," he added.
"Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment."
Hopefully the big Publishers and Platforms can see that the UK is by far the most important territory after N/A and that they could be earning an awful lot more money if they put the same effort and products available to the Yanks to us Brits.

Again well done IW! Great great numbers!!
Well said about the territories. I don't know why CVG keep on giving us reports of how well the Jap market is doing, when in actual fact they now have a very slim share of the world market compared to N/A and Europe. Plus their taste in games is somewhat questionable...(read: perverted.)
It is similar to COD4, but, I think the extra 45 quid (or 22, if you're a particular lucky bastard I know who got a copy from sainsbury's, had a 3 quid off voucher and had 15 percent off because his mum works there) is completely justified.
If you broke it down, surely you'd pay atleast a tenner for the campaign?
Hopefully you'd pay ATLEAST 20 quid for the new online mode, regardless of how similar it is, it's COD. With new maps, new weapons, etc etc.
Spec - ops, I'd certainly pay a tenner for, especially seeing as it'll probably take longer to complete than the campaign did.
Just imagine how massive the next IW COD launch will be (I'm assuming it'll be bigger, because personally, I think this COD is marginally better).
Now, this may sound ridiculous, but, I remember when I was in Primary school, I got half a day off during the World Cup finals, to watch England play (like everyone else in my school).
The idea of this happening 5 or 6 years down the line, but, with a game release, really doesn't seem that far off to me.
Hopefully Australia will achieve similar sales as I'm pretty sure there's a decent market here too.
Also while this may be the biggest launch in Gaming history calling it the biggest in entertainment history is going a bit too far, or am I the only one who remembers how big the Harry Potter series was whenever a new book launched.
An impressive launch indeed. I would however like to point out to CVG staff members that while 4.7 million is a lot, there is certainly a rather large gap between that and 7 million. 2.3 million to be exact. It may seem "small" yet that number is larger than some countries entire populations. 2.3 million units of any whole-sale product is hardly to be sneezed at even if you are playing with "the big boys". If you do, eventually you will find that you aren't so "big" any longer. To put it in to a different perspective, let's say that a copy of "MW2" can be had for roughly 30 quid if you shop around. If that's the case then we're talking about a "missing" 69 million pounds! That is all; now back to the expected continued high sales of "MW2".
The biggest launch of an entertainment game based around warfare ...on Armistice day.
Nice one. (slow clap)
I'm sure it will sell millions, but considering the current situation and timing i think its rather disgraceful for this game to be out at the moment.
A month earlier or later would have done the world of good...its just incredibly insensitive.
A salient point. As a veteran I'm not personally bothered by it, yet I do appreciate where you are coming from with your point of view. I suppose some might say it is fitting in a somewhat twisted sort of way.
Armistice is/was the day after MW2 out, so, I can't see the problem myself.
Ok, it's close, but, that's just b******s really isn't it? Otherwise, we'd be 'close' to some sort of special day every day of the year.
@ The FKD, it's far closer to that, because they're talking about 7 million globally. The 4.7 is just the UK and North America. There's still Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. . .
looking at gamefaqs, it says the 10th.. So Iwill, you seem to be correct. So i apologise. Im pretty sure however that 11,11,2009 was supposed to be the release date. They talked about it forever on a podcast i listen to, comparing it to the 9,9,09 for Beatles.
Still, I don't know how you can really defend the timing either way. Its still stupid and insensitive. 11th November is, has and hopefully will always be Armistice day. Nobody would complain if it came out at Christmas, Easter, Halloween, May day etc..because they are not so directly tied into the subject matter: Ie Killing people and waging war.
Hopefully the big Publishers and Platforms can see that the UK is by far the most important territory after N/A and that they could be earning an awful lot more money if they put the same effort and products available to the Yanks to us Brits.
Oh definitely.
I did my final year Dissertation on the Video game industry and Britain is the second largest market in the gaming industry. The only problem is we are held back by Europe, although that said, Euorpean countries have growth not too short of our own.
congratulations on the best ever game . my only grumble is that it was over with to quickly one last thing in your next game give us a sniper range may be in the spec ops
Based on comments on here its also heading for the Record bargain Bin and Pre owened tittles too!!
Stay away from second-hand copies of "MW2" unless the seller can prove it hasn't been registered on Steam (which is a requirement for the game to work on the PC). If it's one of the console versions then knock yourself out!
If I ever buy this game it would have to be when it's shaved off 45-50% of its current sales tag. For a 6-7 single player campaign and a crippled online PC experience it simply isn't worth anymore than that. All that said, I expect it will be "BBC2" that I will be picking up instead.
