Gearbox and Rebellion have 'healthy rivalry'

Aliens vs. Predator developer, Rebellion says there's a "healthy" rivalry between its game and Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is also being published by Sega.

Speaking to CVG in London last week, senior producer David Brickley said it's important that Rebellion "keep pace" with what the other developer is doing.

"In a healthy sense yeah, I think so," Brickley said, when asked if there was a rivalry between Gearbox and Rebellion's games.

"I think if we all want to produce the best possible game at the end of the day you've got to use your own imagination but keep pace with what other people are doing. We're gamers as well and want as many good games as we can get in our hands.

"There's been some high-level contact at trade shows, stuff like that," he said. "Gentle ribbing and the trading of drunken ideas but nothing co-operative in that sense."

Rivalry or not, Brickley told us that he thinks that AVP's marine campaign - which is very survival horror-inspired - and Colonial Marines - which takes the squad-shooter angle - will offer different experiences.

"There's no point in being direct competition in that sense," the Rebellion man said. "Certainly [Colonial Marines is] a game that's focused very much on the USCN so for that reason alone we've taken it in all sorts of different directions."
