The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will include Valve's Steamworks support, Infinity Ward has confirmed.
The suite of tools gives Infinity Ward access to every component of Steam, including Achievements (Modern Warfare will have 50) and Steam Cloud, which will let players access their user and save data from any PC.
Unfortunately Steam's roster of features doesn't include free dedicated servers. Ahem.

"Steamworks will make it possible for us to have a closer connection to our fans, and enable us to support our community much more than ever before," said community man Robert Bowling.
"Steam is the hands-down leader in offering a community-focused experience on PC, and the inclusion of Steamworks has allowed us to deliver the most feature-rich PC version to ever come from Infinity Ward, which at the end of the day will mean the most to our fans."
I like Valve's dedication to it's PC customers. I like Steam as an online dedicated server service. I don't care much for Steam's Euros pricing - it's usually a rip-off compared to what I can purchase the same games for elsewhere, including VAT and transportation. IMO, digital downloads need to be cheaper than retail copies of a given game given the lack of physical logistics involved.
I also rather abhor having a game tied to an account online which I can then not sell if I choose to (which is a right protected by law incidentally); not without risking having my Steam account banned rendering all purchased games on it unusable. That's a sticking point: I do not accept that a company that has no direct accountability to me, gets to hold all the power over whether or not I get to continue playing a game I purchased. This is also why I am extremely wary of purchasing any PC games that require online activation.

And he obviously hasn't been reading any of the comments on his blog or the forum posts pretty much anywhere then!
Ya know i'm really trying to give IW the benefit of the doubt over this IW.net debacle, but when 402 spouts this typical corporate bulls**t I feel like getting on a plane, driving to IW HQ and nut punching the hell outta him and Vince(IW CEO). And I really am not a violent person.
What gets me is that when the whole Ross/Russell issue flared up at the BBC, they got something like 15,000 complaints tops.
What does the BBC do? They fire Russell, fine Ross, fire a few other staff, change company policy, make a 'no swearing' rule for before 10pm, new rules on 'not making humour cruel' etc etc because of one prank call (admittedly in bad taste) on a programme, on radio, at about 11pm on a Saturday nite. The newspapers like the Daily Mail (and I say newspaper very loosely when talking about the Mail) get hold of it and all hell breaks loose.
The IW.net thing affects many, many more people (petition nearly 160,000 and counting) across the globe, and yet isn't considered news worthy (in national print at least) because it only affects a bunch of nerd gamers, not middle aged, middle class people who are just insulted at how much Ross gets paid.
I was just about to say that this is bulls**t. Great it is going to Steam as per the other titles but seriously who will be buying it after all this crap? Anyone heard anything more from IW about the dedicated servers? Everything seems to have gone quiet which doesnt exactly instill much confidence...
Anyway I was surprised to see that Steam's price for MW2 was actually the same as retailers for once!
Trust me ABJ i've been trawling for any new info for days (I really need to get a life), and there really has been bupkiss over any more IW.net details.
However, there is gonna be a a webchat with Vince and Rob (FourZeroTwo) at the Best Buy webbie on Nov 3rd/4th at 12am GMT (I think, don't quote me). It seems that they'll be inundated with questions about it then. Just have to wait and see how much crap they'll spew this time. We want details dammit!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont really care, lost all interest in this after finding out it has no dedicated server support.
Besides Bad Company 2 is out in a few month with dedicated server support, PC version will have a higher number of players online than the console versions and if its anything like Battlefield 2 will make MW2 look like crap, im sure it will be buggy as hell on release though lol
sorry Infinity Ward? what fans will they be? YOU have royally f**ked the PC gaming community without any remorse. I have bought all your games since the very first Call of Duty and I was an avid fan - but you can take your modern warfare 2 and SHOVE IT UP YOUR CONSOLE LOVING bottom YOU SET OF SELL OUT c**ts. YOU MAKE ME SICK.
