With its 2009 series entries, EA moved to diversify the franchise into core, casual, and free-to-play games that played to the strengths of their respective platforms.
The most recent release was September's core entry, Need For Speed Shift, for PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PSP.
The publisher will ship Need For Speed Nitro for Wii and DS in November with "a fresh and unique visual style", and launch a beta for its free-to-play, open world PC title Need for Speed World Online this winter.
"Few videogame franchises ever reach the 100 million units mark, so this is a huge honour. We have millions of fans to thank for driving us to this milestone," said Frank Gibeau, president of the EA Games label.
Loving Shift - on-line is great fun. Way better than any other racing game I've played. Dirt 2 was just too easy, repetitive and those annoying 'buddies' just wound me up. At least in Shift you can barge people off the road and not have them say "are you ok?"
You're a grumpy sod ain't ya Altitude. Shift is by far the best and most fun racing game on the market - but I agree that the other ones were crap to mediocre.

I reckon there's quite a lot of people who'd disagree. And I'm actually in a fairly good mood today, as it happens
I loved the first one on the ps1 (introduced me to the car I now drive) but I really liked underground then they never were really good again since. But as wotsit said shift is a really good game it shocked me when I played the demo (more than I can say for the foreskin 3 demo) But 100 million units sold is impressive none the less good job EA.

I'm with you Altitude, whilst it was defo the best NFS game there's been since Hot Pursuit on the PS1 it's still a pretty shoddy racer with a steering system designed by Fisher Price. Plus it was just too damn short, i was on the NFS championship within 2 days of play and i never lost a single race.

I would tend to agree also. I actually really enjoyed Carbon and the one I have one my IPod touch (Undercover)is bloody brilliant! Some of the other versions have been rather dodgy. I would say Need for Speed has a chequered past myself.
Grid is more fun, Forza is more realistic. I was looking forward to the new NFS (back to its roots, away from the underground poop) but the demo left me disappointed. Still congratulations on 100 million sales 15 games in 15 years, maybe it's time to slow that down slightly before they wear the brand out.
