Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Nintendo will "move along in step with the progression of technology", acknowledging the increasing importance of HD visuals in games. Finally.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I'm a consumer that has an HDTV, I'd want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too," said Miyamoto.

"And I think as we've seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we're going to see videogames and Nintendo's games move along in step with the progression of technology.
"But what I don't think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that's going to make the gameplay experience better," he added. "So we're still going to focus on the gameplay, but we'll take advantage of the technology as it comes out," Miyamoto told IndustryGamers.
Who didn't expect Nintendo's next console to be HD, anyway?
new DS and Wii next year? wouldn't be surprised at all. The Wii sales are starting to weaken from admittedly their own loft heights but it's a trend that needs to be addressed. I've got my wii running through component on my 40" lcd and it still looks like a dogs dinner. a wii with the power of the 360/ps3 would be great if they then rolled out some big hitters, Zelda, Mario, 1080 etc.
A HD Wii would definitely hit the spot. However, I do think that Nintendo need to add more online features too. With no achievement/trophy system or a simple friends system, Nintendo are seriously falling behind the other consoles in this regard.
If Nintendo pulled out all the stops and included all of the above into their next console, I'd be all over it.
I must admit that, since I bought my Bravia HDTV, the Wii now looks much better - as crisp as it does on a decent CRT. It looked awful on my old Samsung.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 was HD out of the box in 2005, when the first wave of HDTVs were hitting shop shelves. Thats moving with technology, not talking about it 4 years later

Exactly, it's only natural progression. Good on them for getting back on track and being succesful this gen, sales-wise, next Nintendo console I expect bigger and better things, focus on gameplay as like said thats the most more important, and keep up with the tech.

I think the point he was making was that now lots of consumers have HD tv's they didn't four years ago. Its swings and roundabouts, The Xbox 360 might have had HD 4 years ago, but the Wii has motion controls which the 360 is getting soon. So you could say the same about MS. The reality is both companies had to pick what technology they wanted first and which to add later, in either case it has worked for them both in the sales figures, market share and brand.
Not going HD this time around certainly hasn't hurt them business wise, but there will come a time when HD is the standard, not just in gaming but in TV as well, and so they would naturally have to move up.
Back in 2006 the HDTV market wasn't that big, but by the time any HD Nintendo console comes out, the market will be large enough to buy into it due to an increased take up of HDTV's recently.
Quite a lot of people out there probably won't buy an HDTV before their CRT set stops working after all. That's how it was for us when ours stopped working at the back end of last year anyway, and it was only then that I bothered to think about picking up an HD console...
Same as above with regards to HDTV. Only had ours about a year now when ours broke. Still now, I am not fussed with watching HDTV right now. Maybe it's because I have been used to seeing it for such a long time having crisp visuals on my PC monitor.
the thing with MS including HD on the 360 out of the box was that the TV market was going HD anyway, but it takes time and there are always going to be people that adopt things early. The motion control thing is still a gimick at the moment, not a real "standard" so MS were thinking about it but not including it. Nintendo only didnt include HD in the Wii because of cost, they wanted a huge profit on their next console (the Wii) so produced a low cost one, not like MS and Sony who both made losses on their new SKU.
I am not sold on the motion control being the next standard in controlling but HD was definately the next thing. The 3D HD thing is going to be another gimick i think rather than a standard, as it has come too soon after the step upto HD.
What type of cable do you need to get the Wii looking good on a HDTV. I also have a Sony Bravia and the Wii display looks pretty terrible using the cable that came with it. My Wii now sits upstairs underneath my old tv.
I do think that the next Nintendo console needs to be HD as the majority of users now have HD sets of some sort and this will only increase in the future. However I think it is more important for them to deliver a richer experience with better friend integration and downloadable demos etc. The one thing that I really miss is the ability to play a demo of a game for a nintendo console (although it is at least encouraging that you can do it for the DS). I also think that the controller needs to be designed to play traditional style games as well as motion controlled ones as hopefully this will stop developers cramming in motion controls for the sake of it.
A Wii HD is only good if companies starts to make games that really takes advantage of the machine's power. The current Wii has far too many games that looks like something that could have been released on N64

Well you will need a component cable to and then switch the wii to a 480p display. I have mine running on a 40" samsung and it looks crisp.
Tha cable that comes with it isn't even a full scart cable it is a composite cable which is pretty much as bad as it gets these days. However even with an RGB scart cable I had some strange ghosting on the reds through my tv (possibly something to do with the upscaling the tv is doing) As soon as I plugged it in via a component cable it was fantastic.
seriously, it is time. i don't mind the graphics on wii at the moment, the best fun i've had this year was on madworld and that includes after playing batman etc... but the thought of playing zelda and mario in 720p or whatever else really is a sweet thought. they owe it to us people who have followed them for decades and supported them no matter what, cough s**te party games cough.
Good to see Nintendo finally acknowledging HD. More importantly, he says Nintendo are going to focus on gameplay. Remember how great they were when they used to do that?
