Modern Warfare 2 "caters to the hardcore gamer"

Infinity Ward says we've only seen the tip of the multiplayer iceberg
The Modern Warfare 2 closed beta currently going on behind the scenes is just the "tip of the iceberg" in terms of multiplayer content, Infinity Ward has said.

Speaking in London today, community man Robert Bowling said there's "a lot more" to be revealed in terms of unlockables for the sequel.

"The beta is really just the tip of the iceberg at this point, we're really just showing a little bit [of the game]," he said.

"There's a lot more to come, whether it be customizable kill streaks, custom death streaks, equipment like tactical insertion, Semtex grenades - all that stuff.

"What we're offering with Modern Warfare 2 is a ridiculous amount of customisation. The lead-out is insane, you have all these attachments to choose from. It really caters to the hardcore gamer who wants to dive in deep," he said.

I just hope there's enough Spec Ops (2-player co-op) to keep me busy. I've just played my last game of Operation Flashpoint today and have now given up for good with that. The controls for close combat are so poor compared to Modern Warfare.

Soungs great, I'm as "hardcore" a gamer as they get to be hounest and hearing this gets me really excited for this game. Can't wait, just trying to save up some money for this right now. Very Happy

Great time to be a gamer huh?
Little Moth on 15 Oct '09
To be honest I'd say this is more for the casual than the hardcore, it's nothing different and is most likely to be bought by people who rarely by games, just cos there's guns doesn't mean it's teh uber hardcore experience.
treesmurf 11 on 15 Oct '09
Because of the extra fiver and the fact that I wont play the multiplayer (I prefer Halo's) I wont be buying it.

This sounds great, but worries me slightly at the same time.

I think part of the fantastic thing about MW1 was that pretty much everyone on each team knew every map, gun, perk etc. So it was pretty much even, the rest was just down to what suited you, how good you were and what particular challenges you were aiming for.

If you start chucking in so much stuff even the most hardcore will never get round to knowing what works best for them, then you lose all that!

I felt MW1 had the perfect amount of guns - maybe a few more attachments wouldn't have hurt, but then seeing as you only had around 3 choices, that's what made the choice so important!

I bet almost everyone who reads this can name every gun on MW1 - I still want that for MW2!

Please IW, don't make 30,000 different perks and a million different kill streak perks, 10 or so tops, please!

As long as everything is unlocked slowly, with some things held back for prestege mode only, it'll be fine. Very Happy

Out of interest, is anyone genuinely going to boycott this game because it is FIVE POUNDS more expensive than it probably ought to be?

For five pounds, you can buy:

Half a KFC bucket (although eating out of a bucket is to my mind only one step removed from eating out of a trough...)

Uwe Boll's 'In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale' from Play.com

6.3 tunes on Itunes

A copy of CVG Magazine (note the free plug!) from WHSmiths

Two medium-sized lattes (latti?) from Starbucks.

Stick to your principles if you feel that you must. But I'm buying it.

They can stick their game. I for one shall be spending the extra 5 pounds they have seen fit to charge in PoundstretchersŞ:

1. An ornate china gnome on a toad stool with a fishing rod.

2. A pack of 48 partially charged AAA batteries.

3. A twin pack of Parmolive deodorant from Bahrain.

4. A set of carpet knives (blunt).

5. Pickled onion Space Invaders crisps - 10 pack (5 extra free!).

HAVE THAT ACTIVISION.

Laughing Pound shops are a cancer on the high street. Saying that, I am tempted by the 10 pack of Space Invaders. Yum.

Space Invaders?! Ok, so I'm being swayed... they are delicious, even though they are effectively just Monster Munch for chavs...
BeauBeau on 16 Oct '09
Iwill, you hit the nail on the head, have a hypothetical cookie. That's my worry as well, just too much choice. Not a bad option to have, though, to be honest.

but they are only 10p a pack in selected stores. 5 packs of them instead of a pack of 'Not-as-big-as-they-used-to-be-Munch' - call me Mr Chavsta!
Currychips on 16 Oct '09
Damn you all and your images of pickled onion Monster Munch / Space Invaders. You made my mouth water Smile
Dajmin on 16 Oct '09
That's it. I'm off to buy Space Invaders and Monster Munch for an independent taste test. I recommend you all do the same.

If I hadn't already posted a Harry Hill-stylee post this week, you better believe that I'd be proposing a fight right about now...
BeauBeau on 16 Oct '09
When he said it was the tip of the iceberg, I dont think he meant, to follow was a winner takes all fight to the death between monster munch and space invaders. Arrow

Incedentially, monster munch would beat ten shades of sh@t out of space invaders Laughing
ewko117 on 16 Oct '09
If it means that I as what is now classified as a "casual" gamer (i.e. I don't get as many hours in as I'd like) can't progress in the game - then I won't be taking part in this party...

COD5 - was too "serious"... James Bond Quantum of Solace was great fun - on the same engine... and therefore got much more play from me.

s**t! That changes everything.

And hypothetical cookies, my favourite!

im downloading this for the pc, no way am i paying anywhere near the rrp for a 10 hour campaign.
Tobal on 17 Oct '09
Ha, the only fools here are those willing to pay the extra 5er for a game that definitely IS NOT worth an EXTRA five pounds.

It's just a god damn game, and we already pay enough for games, and fat asses like bobby kottick thrive on that attitude of 'it's only five more pounds'...thats one eighth of the cost of a normal game from a retailer, even bigger portion from the online arena!

I love the look of MW2 and MW was probably my favourite FPS to date (actually, =/= Killzone 2) but I am just not prepared to have all this corporate BS thrust upon me.
DevilsNeverCry on 17 Oct '09
So what will probably be your favourite game ever isn't worth an extra fiver?

Fine, if that's how you feel, but, if a fiver mattered that much to me, I wouldn't be buying 40 quid games at all, probably wouldn't buy any games actually. You can't forget there will be the inevitable price wars between shops, so chances are, you'll be able to pick it up for 40 quid from somewhere.
lwill on 17 Oct '09
I'm sick of it in CoD. I only play the thing cause my bud over in US likes to team up for Zomms, but lag is usually really bad on CoD. Bullets follow you through walls. You need thrice the bullets to shooy your opponant dead, yet they just wave their gun in your general direction & I'm dead. I'm actually dreading playing MW2. How about some decent dedicator servers down under here. We pay the same as everyone else, we should get the same. Peace...
