Fans have always been disappointed when they didn't get to take on the gigantic T-Rex-like Brumack at the end of the first Gears of War. But one hour in to Gears of War 2 and we've already killed six. As much as we hate to say it, Cliffy B wasn't lying. The sequel really is bigger, better and more badass.
Since turning the Unreal Engine into a current-gen buzzword two years ago, Epic's gritty franchise has been copied and imitated by almost every shooter series going, but never topped.
Still, it's unquestionably not as fresh a concept these days. just look at all the Ghost Recons and Army of Two's littering the shelves. Epic always had its work cut out coming up with a sequel that was going to raise our eyebrows above the millimetre mark.
While certainly not as groundbreaking or fresh as the original was in its day, Epic has managed to deliver a thrilling ten-plus hour package of explosive entertainment and god knows how many hours of multiplayer carnage.
Gears of War 2 is a stunning technical marvel, sporting stand-out art design and some of the most impressive visual playgrounds we've seen in a console game.
The excellent gun battles and knock out set-pieces of the original are back. The cover system is tweaked and unrivalled. The scale of the bosses and sheer spectacle of the firefights put every over shooter from 2008 in its place. But Epic's sequel is still far from perfect.
Incredibly for this generation's most famous balls-to-the-wall action series, the most prominent mark made by Gears of War 2's campaign is its story, which has been thought out, expanded and taken far more seriously.
There are at least three major plot twists in game that take Gears from its straight out good-versus-baddie Michael Bay movie roots to something a little more interesting. At its core the second game is an 'Empire Strikes Back' episode tackling darker story threads of humanity's losing battle against subterranean invaders, plus co-op wingman Dom's increasingly desperate attempts to find his missing wife Maria.
It's all very well done without a stench of cheese or even risk of the soppy stuff overshadowing the core action. Gears 2 knows when to chuck in the 'F' word or have Cole go off on one of his Bernie Mac rants, cushioned between more sombre moments, one of which - and we don't want to delve near to the 'Oscar moment' review cliché here - is definitely among the most powerful put into a game narrative.
It should be applauded, because it's very cleverly and respectfully dealt with and something no one ever expected to be saying about this series.
Before you worry that Gears has gone all soppy though; don't. It hasn't and your girlfriend still won't want to play it after seeing you chainsaw enemies through the gut. There's so much action packed inside Gears 2's chapters it's almost sickening. each chapter is like putting a whole pack of Mentos into can of Diet Coke at once.
The core game systems - the guns and cover - have seen some tweaking and for the most part just work. Marcus and co use cover items more intelligently than before, and move between objects as smooth as butter. Previous issues where you attempt to dash past cover and end up locking onto it almost never happen, which is a good sign that the kinks have been ironing out.
Just when you think Epic has pulled out all the stops - and can't fit any more Corpsers on the screen at once - it'll throw two more at you. Maybe three. And a hundred Locust foot soldiers. And blow up the floor.
AI partners are actually useful this time; running in to provide support fire and reviving you when you're down (lesser on harder difficulty levels though). If only because they occasionally keep you from the game over screen, it feels far more rewarding to have Cole, Baird and co at your side.
One section in particular is hands-down the single best chapter in either Gears of War game. Annoyingly Microsoft won't let us tell you about it - and we wouldn't dare spoil it anyway - but we can say that it involves putting a chainsaw through something far more gruesome than a Locust's chest. You'll know it when you see it.
Gears' arsenal of weapons have been tinkered and skewed to sound even more powerful and each feels more satisfying. The Lancer is now a chizzled and deadly-sounding beast compared to the original's clunky and annoying rat-a-tat-tat gun.
Locust weapons aren't the last-resort selections they were in the first game, they're now strategic, powerful-but-slow alternatives to the COG's automatic-but-weak arsenal.
Thankfully Epic has opted to concentrate on this refinement work across all of Gears 2's guns rather than flooding you with new toys, and it makes for a particularly balanced multiplayer experience (although the flamethrower, shield, mortar and Mulcher mini-gun have relevant spots in the line-up too and are fun to use).
Teams have been expanded with five members instead of four, which makes the multiplayer experience feel a sight more frantic and also caters for larger multiplayer maps, which definitely look and feel grander in scale.
The player expansion trickles into the design of other areas of the multiplayer experience as well, including the addition of bots (not available in Horde though) and the awesome new game mode Wingman, which separates players into several teams of two.
One or two 'superweapons', i.e. the mortar, Hammer of Dawn or Mulcher mini-gun are placed as showpieces in the arena and players are forced to scramble for them. The introduction of Chainsaw duels serves only as an instigator over lag and "I chainsawed you first!" outbursts over Xbox Live. They are quite exciting though.
Putting lancer on lancer switches the action to a cinematic camera angle and challenging combatants frantically hammer the B button until a winner is decided. We're sure the technical process of deciding who mashed the buttons the fastest isn't very complicated, but it makes you feel like you actually did some work, at least.
But the most poignant addition on the online side is the excellent co-op bout Horde, so good is it that Epic's decided to slap it right on the front menu. Much like Unreal Tournament's Invasion mode, Horde sticks five players together on a multiplayer map and then challenges them to survive wave after wave of increasingly tough Locust baddies.
Cleverly, if you and your teammates fail to defeat a Locust wave (and they get bloody hard) you can choose to re-attempt it as many times you like. This encourages strategy among your teammates and you'll soon be splitting in to pairs, manning the Hammer of Dawn and backing up your comrades as they defend a besieged house as if it were Lord of the Rings.
It makes us want that four-player co-op campaign even more, though the variety in the new co-op campaign is fantastic and at times absolutely awesome.
But as we said, Gears 2 isn't perfect - not in the campaign mode, anyway. Disappointingly, the slightly off vehicle section in the first game's campaign has been multiplied and extended in length. Gears 2 will have Marcus and co hijack various Locust nasties for GTA-style joyrides, and storm through a forest in a tank the size of a monster truck.
While these sections are thrilling and quite fun the first time around, subsequent playthroughs remove the initial novelty factor, and driving off ledges and blasting at relentless waves of Locust troops can get quite frustrating in harder difficulties. We can see their place in breaking up on-foot combat, but we wish they could've been cut down a bit or put on rails and expanded into awesome forest derrick battles.
Another thing that bothered us was the sheer amount of underground cave environments, which take up a good third of the game. While far more varied and beautiful than the original's subterranean levels, cave environments near the end of the Gears 2 campaign become almost interchangeable, which is a shame after the beautiful and radically diverse settings from the first half of the game.
With those two complaints considered, we've come to the conclusion that Gears 2 could've benefited from a bit of de-bloating in the editors room, but its lack of perfect pacing is hardly a huge flaw.
These issues won't spoil your enjoyment though and Gears of War 2 definitely tops the first. The campaign is the meaty Hollywood blockbuster Epic promised, delivering ten of the most quality hours of gaming from the last 12 months (and even more in co-op and multiplayer).
Gears of War 2 helps to change the perception of the 'angry space marine' shooter by thanks to a compelling story at its core. There are points in Gears of War 2's ridiculous and explosive Brumack set-pieces that you'll wonder how you'll ever be able to go back to the original game without being under-whelmed.
And that's just about the biggest compliment we could give the team at Epic without saying it really is "bigger, better and more badass". Even though it is.
Sounding pretty damn sweet then. I predicted about a 9.3 from them, so they haven't failed me
I'd have liked to hear more about the new multiplayer lobby system though - I still can't stay connected in Gears 1 for more than a few minutes at a time (if I'm lucky).
ouch!! thats a low score, not even as good as kiddie game LBP? there goes my last reason to get a 360! was looking forward to this game too, dark days with this epic fail

I'm sorry Mr fanboy but idoubt you ever were going to get a 360. If an average score of 90 odd percent isn't good enough for you i'm guessing that you have only one game for your ps3 and its been gathering dust for a long time waiting for LBP.
Shame that you only exclusive game to rave about this christmas. At least you won't be too strapped for cash like the rest of us with a full schedule of quality titles to play.

Here's an example of why all the games that were given 10/10 this year should never have been given such a score.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the same average score as LBP on metacritic?
Edit: Now 96%
Poor suiveloom, he must be reading this and weeping
It's official, gears 2 is the greatest action game ever and surely game of the year.
Some great games on the ps3 as well though, looking forward to resistance 2 and LBP. Both my machines will get some serious playtime over the coming months.

So you go around posting the exact same comments on gaming forums across the far and wide interweb, you’re a very sad little individual are you not? If you don’t like a game then fine, constructive criticisms as to why are welcomed, though ‘LOL’ based buffoonery projects an image of yourself as a village idiot, is that what you purport to be?
Unless of course you are presenting this in an ironic way, though I doubt that as I sometimes worry for humanity. But then I realised that much of humanity does not care about computer games. I do though, I like them.

you really are a tool! 9.3 is an excellent score for what is an excellent game. lets see what killzone2 gets eh, i can assure you that it won't be higher than 9.3. how is it "dark days with this epic fail"? any game that gets over 8.5 is certainly worth your time if its the sort of game you like. why don't you just f**k of back to the sony threads. people like you give PS3 owners a bad name with your silly little comments. infact i give your post an epic fail. its dark days for sony fanboys if you represent them
"It's all very well done without a stench of cheese"- you've gotta be kidding! - it is a cheese fest! - I do agree that one particular point which you are refering to was handled with a surprising amount of class (I won't spoint it here though). I finished the game yesterday and the review was pretty spot on. The buggy/tank in the woods was one of my favourite parts though - although I've only played that part Once. I played it on Medium/default diffuculty and found it a lot easier than gears one (might be better on Hard or insane), with not as many got on foot set pieces as in the first game. The on rails parts were good (some great) - but could've been better. The cave bits did get on my nerves and dragged on; too similar to parts of the first game. There are some fantastic bits and the level CVG mentioned which they did not wanna spoil is one of my favourite things from any game (reminded me of a level from Extreme Ghouls N' Ghosts is all I'll say. Hands down best graphics I have seen on any game and Gears fans will not be disapointed; has tons more character than KillZone 2 (I do also own a PS3,so I still hope KZ 2 will be good).
Cant wait for this game!!! but for gods sake how many of you on this webite are such dorks!! the ps3 has no games(very wrong)! the 360 is rubbish(very wrong)!...please shut the f**k up! both are awsome consoles.why do people hate consoles they dont own? did sony touch you up when you were sleeping or something so you cry when a ps3 is sold?
Welcome to the Club. Going to be a lot of empty busses and trains on Friday me thinks. Woo Hoo!
You want to be careful with that - you'd be better to take Monday off instead just in case there's an issue with you getting it on the 7th (God forbid!).

My LittleBigPlanet shipped today so I should have that to play instead if anything goes wrong so it's win-win.
<rant> Please, please PLEASE don't say "loosing" when you mean "losing". It makes you sound like a forum noob, and when you're the author of the article, it calls into question the credentials of the entire organization.

DO NOT SAY THAT! If it does happen ill come looking for you altitude, if you have cursed me...
I cant think of anything worse than seeing everyone on your Friends list playing Gears and you cant. Pre ordered in Game so Ill be popping in there early doors on Friday.
Is it my connection at work, or is CVG really slow today?
Anyway, great review. Hoping to complete Dead Space before friday so that I can trade it towards Gears 2. Otherwise, I am skintypoos!
Seems to be getting good reviews from everywhere and looks to be 360's GOTY. With this, LBP and Resistance 2 coming in a couple of weeks I am one happy (and skint) gamer!

I'm just naturally cautious with my time off work - it's very precious!

Funnily enough, thats exactly what Im doing. Finished Dead Space on Sunday and dont see any replay value in it unless someone knows of any DLC for that game it is gone as of Friday.

Aside from the extra space suits there isn't any.
Doubt they'll be anything expansion wise though. haven't played it yet as i've been waiting for people like your goodself to trade it in.

It is a good game and I deffo reccomend it but when you finish it there isnt really any replay value and it didnt really give me any out and out scares. Sounds like im knocking it but im not, hopefully with the follow up they incorporate some sort of MP, it would be awesome in the Zero G Maps.
For someone who swears by metacritic, he must be gutted to see gears 2 wiping the floor with it. Not only is it wiping the floor with it, it's doing it with a far larger amount of reviews(which is always harder to do).
If resistance 2 gets 18 reviews on there it'll only go one way(downwards). 87-89% i predict.
Resistance 2 - 83% from 1UP lol. Oh and an 80% from GamePro (Current overall metascore 90% and sure to drop) Metal Gear Solid 4 meta 94% Gears Of War 2 meta stands proudly at 96% so far, and makes it the best exclusive title of the year
To all the green eyed owners, resistance 2 may or may not be better but who gives a s**t, they both look like decent games and if a game scores 85% or over for me its a must buy if im interested in it.
And you Fcking know if you had a 360 you would definatly get it. the mentality of people here is fcking dire. So some people are going to be playing something that you cant have, thats what it boils down to. pathetic.
Happy gaming 360 owners.
Suivaloom- "RESISTANCE 2 HAS GARNERED HIGHER SCORES THAN THIS"
So does that mean afew reviews, IT IS A BETTER GAME? Why dont you play them both and juge for yourself?
feeg86-no its called being an bottomhole who just comes on here to try be a smart mouth dick. though in an earlier post i agreed that any game that scores over 85 is certainly worth your time.
As a rabid playstation fanboy I must admit that this is the only 360 exclusive I want. But there is no need for me to buy a 360 for one game (thats just silly).
Oh well LBP has been dispatched. Im sure I can live.
god i hate the "TOP TRUMPS" mentality of some people. i miss reviews that are done by 3 or so people, after a while of reading them you can normally pick which one suits your taste. opinions are like assholes...... everyones got one........... and some stink more than others..........
Can't wait to get me some Gears Of War action on Friday, will be in Asda handing over my crisp 40 notes (or my not so crisp slightly cracked debit card) should be a top, top day 4 hrs of that then off to the pub!
OH YEAH!!! I love this game... I was totally shocked to find in the post this afternoon after a hard day in the office... my pre-ordered Gears of War 2!!! From what I've played so far... you're gonna love it too!!!! All thanks go to Play.com for messing up the order I guess!!!!
team-mates AI was questionable at times, anyone else getting that?, they'd just stop at points and leave you until a new part. annoying. but hey.
the bit with cole and the underground speaker and that was one of the only times i've actually laughed out loud playing a game, hilarious. cole is brilliant.
the bit they are talking about "oscar performerance" rivals alyx's in ep:2. its spectacular and horrifying.
there are a lot of unfinished sub-plots though, annoyingly. so i guess we'll have to wait to see them.
changed it to Resistance 2 instead, hopefully that wont be as average as this
Well very disappointing. Judging by the scores Resistance 2 is better
That is such a shocking turn of events after Resistance 2 was derided out of all recognition, I repeat it :
RESISTANCE 2 HAS GARNERED HIGHER SCORES THAN THIS
I wonder what clueless pair Marti and stonecold have to say about this
We all make mis-judgements at times
Dear Mr Clueless C*nt
I think you'll find Metacritic scores Gears of War 2 as 93, whereas Resistance as 89. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it you retarded baffoon.
Yours Marti Apparently.
I came here to check out CVG's review of GoW2. What did I find in the comments section? Mindless fanboyism, which is a given seeing this is a gaming site. But I also found a poorly spelt insult by Marty. Marty's grammar isn't what concerns me, to be honest nothing on this site concerns me anymore, but I just thought I'd comment to make Marty foam at the mouth as he usually does at the first sight of somebody who doesn't completely concur with all of his hypothesis' and musings.
I remember having a "discussion" with Marty(NEO ANARCHIST AND BEST BANG SINCE THE BIG ONE, No less) which became as daft as his signature as cited above. There is no cure for ignorance, or even worse, being "clever" as Marty is(I can assure everyone that Marty is extremely "Clever", problem with "clever" people is they know everything so you cant communicate anything other than your complete agreement with their theories to them, everyhting else to them must simply be stupid and the opinion of a lower form of life.
Chances are I wont return to this site again for a number of months, so Marty's possible reply will mean nothing to me whatsoever, and not to be disrespectful to anyone else who detests Marty is all his Neo anarchist glory, I'm not interested in what you have to say either. I'm sure you are all very nice people but I will have to resist the urge to join in with the Marty bashing if you don't mind.
I suppose all I wanted to say was that, Marty you're a p r i c k. You are also a complete and utter f**kwit with the personality and presumable odor of a teenage boy's wanking sock. f**k you Marty, and f**k you're poorly spelt "witty" and "clever" replies/opinions. You're a c**t Marty, don't ever forget that or let anyone convince you that you're not.
Warm regards,
Mr Thomas J c**kles esq.
