FANTASY AUTHORS I LIKE!

By Jane Beaumont, Cape Town, South Africa.

Anne McCaffrey (when she's not in Pern! i.e. no dragons): try The Ship who Sang (has some sequels) the "Crystal Singer" series, etc.

Peter Beagle has written more than just The Last Unicorn - his stuff is always strange & intriguing.  Review of Giant Bones.

Terry Pratchett needs no intro and is addictive if you're into it, but have you tried his collaboration with Neil Gaiman (of "Neverwhere" fame), Good Omens? Very different. Also Pratchett's "Johnny" series and non-Discworld fantasy. dolphin.jpg (8431 bytes)

Clive Barker's Weaveworld and Imajica are more fantasy than his usual horror and have some amazing ideas.

Another collaboration that works synergistically is Peter Straub (Floating Dragon, etc.) and Stephen King's Talisman - great stuff.

James Blaylock wrote a lovely book called The Last Coin.

Robert Jordan is dragging things out now, but the early part of the "Wheel of Time" umpteenology was great. Now you wait so long for the next wrist crusher that you've (well, I've) forgotten the plot!

Stephen Donaldson - I loved the "Thomas Covenant" six-pack, but not his subsequent stuff - not for the easily depressed!

Julian May (who is a woman by the way and a member of Mensa - yay yay up the girls) is amazing - the Pliocene saga plus all the diamond mask stuff - a bit of potboiling in the later stuff and some padding but generally very interesting. Not sure if it really gets herded under fantasy or SF but the borderlands are hazy at the best of times for me.
