Xbox Live Update Preview program is a go
Sign-ups have begun for the Xbox Live Update Preview program, which will allow participants to try out the new Facebook and Twitter functionality before its official November 27 release.

"I am happy to announce that we're doing an Xbox Live Update Preview program for upcoming features such as Zune, Facebook and Twitter," says The Major.

"Much like we have done in the past, you'll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox Live Gamertag," he adds.

"Once you do that, you need to fill out the 'Xbox Live Update Preview Sign Up' survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. We're asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can."

The Microsoft mouthpiece points out that MS is looking for thousands of participants, "so your chances of making it in are good", and that the opportunity is open to Xbox Live member in all regions, Gold or Silver.

I have to say, this is one beta I won't even bother applying for. Still don't see the point of having games automatically post messages.

If your Twitter followers are able to join your games (by having the console and the game), they must surely also be on the console to click the join link. So why don't they just use the normal method?

And I have no interest in hearing that a bunch of people have completed level 3 of whatever game they're playing.

Likewise, I won't apply for this beta, but I will give the apps a try when it's released fully.

Why does articles about Fbook etc coming to 360 automatically get idiots complaining about "not wanting automatic status updates"?

IT WON'T HAPPEN!

It's been confirmed numerous times that nothing automatically gets updated but it MAY be something they could add if people demanded it.

Despite this we still have plonkers such as these two moan about a FREE update.

Also why anybody wouldn't want INSTANT 1080p movies is beyond me. Rolling Eyes

So if they're not posting automatic updates, why is anyone going to choose the clunky 360 text-entry method to post updates when they have already been using a computer-based version up until now?

You prat. I wasn't moaning, just commenting that it's not a beta test that I'm going to bother signing up for. As I stated in my post, I will use the features. Rolling Eyes

Because some games (the first being Tiger Woods) will offer users a MANUAL feature to update facebook with High scores, screenshots, achievements or whatever. People on your Fbook can then try beat your score.

Also the 360 version offers full screen photographs, no adds, avatar support, (the usual) QWERTY keyboard, and you don't have to leave the sofa.

I also imagine Inside Xbox etc will create "official" Facebook pages or community pages for clans, games and events.

Free? These features are Gold only, which makes them pretty damn expensive actually, considering my PC does the same for free.

Especially with PSN reportedly adding cross-game voice in its next update, the single remaining decent feature of Live they don't have.

I'm all up for free features, but as the saying goes - they ain't free if you've already paid.
