When I first heard about this game I thought it might be a bit rubbish, but everything I hear about it makes me more and more interested...

More Noisia please!

So Guitar Hero's guitar parts aren't pre-mixed? Come on, this isn't about actual DJing, the same as GH isn't about actually playing guitar.

poorly executed "dj" game.

That's the whole point of the game, just like shooting somebody on Call of Duty doesn't mean I'm a killer or somebody has died.
It's like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, being able able to play a plastic instrument doesn't mean that you can play the real thing but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable. I think people realised that they wouldn't become real DJ's as a result of this game when it mostly involves pressing a red, green or blue button when prompted, nor has the dev tried to imply that the game will make you the worlds next top DJ.

Well said Solo, if I hadnt lost my login would have said the same, am sure you meant that shooting someone on CoD DOESNT make you a killer though!

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out (have since edited) Edit: as you said in the next post Razz
Mr S0L0 D0L0 on 6 Oct '09
I assumed it would be scratching and crossfaders. A few samples. That would suit hip hop more than other dance music I suppose.

Not keen on the mash ups really, but BDP, Axelrod, Shadow, GangStarr etc sounds OK.

Won't be buying it though!
ricflair on 6 Oct '09
I can't see me picking this up, but I've heard it's supposed to be great fun.

Sure, some will criticise the track-listing - but, it's exactly the same as with GH or RB.

You'll always get the odd one that will moan about Aerosmith getting their own version of GH and saying that it should have been given to some obscure Scandinavian Death-Metal band that have sold about 100 albums.

You really can't please everyone.

thing is, you can get proffesional dj controllers for £69 consisting of 2 jogwheels, a crossfader and an equalizer. whats this... £100 plus?

with software like virtual dj, you can mix tunes with a visual representation of the beats, a beat counter and auto-sync functions.

even with hand holding features would have been much more fun and satifying than this cack.

it would teach actual skills and theory on beatmatching/mixing which could been taken further onto real tables if you were into it. and a 'realitic' option to take off the aids and (in theory) do it for real.

i started like this, and it was great fun just mixing between tracks using the auto-sync and now i have a full vinyl setup.

they could have done something a lot more credible and worthwhile than this throwaway garbage - especially for the price.

they wouldnt have needed to sacrifice fun and accessibility for a bit of realism.
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09
That's all fine if you want to learn to DJ. This is a game. Not a tutorial. Sorry to use the same example over and over, but does Guitar Hero teach you anything about playing an actual guitar? No. And nor should it. It's a game.
darry on 6 Oct '09
learning a guitar is complex and takes a lot of time - and isnt much fun.

i could have any dummy here pulling off a mix within an hour after showing you the idea behind it - even making mistakes while learning - its a lot of fun.

for a guitar it'd be frustrating as hell.

i can guarantee, anyone interested in EDM - never mixed before - would have much more fun beatmatching and fading than on this crap. real mixing isnt as hard as you may think.

games should be fun. mixing is a lot of fun. when i first heard of this, i thought is was a genius and natural match. turns out it was an over-simplified slap in the face to consumers. and a rip off to boot.

then again - this is activision. aiming for maximum buck.

a better developer would have made something worthwhile. like rockstar and their beaterator game. something that doesnt treat you like a retard. they even have a competition on to find talented music producers.

Which is all well and good, but how far do you take it before you're competing with Fruity Loops or Acid?

Smile
ParmaViolet on 6 Oct '09
its a balance between accessibilty and realism.

all you need its an interface and interactive tutorials to bridge the gap and stop it becoming brain damage.

the fun would come naturally when you find youself making surprisingly proffesional-sounding productions.
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09

Good point. Consoles are never really going to host games that produce music (or emulate it's creation) that match even semi-professional workstation programmes. I've DJed a little bit, and if you're talking about cutting and scratching, then I'm sure pretty much every DJ in the world would tell you that it is pretty difficult. It would certainly require more effort that an average kid who wants to play a game would put in.

I can't stand all these musicians who complain about these games being 'unrealistic' and discouraging people from learning the 'actual skills'. It's rubbish. They're games. You think PES has made less kids pursue professional football careers?

They're just games. You have to be able to pick it up in a few minutes, and enjoy yourself.

That really isn't what Activision are aiming for though - there are already plenty of packages out there for things like that (the Rave E-Jay stuff on the PC was years ago now). Beyond that, you have the likes of Fruity Loops - which really isn't particularly difficult to use, either - but I don't think Activision want to be entering that domain.

That's not to say that we won't see those kind of things in later versions though - I'm pretty sure we'll see a few sequels out of this.....it is Activision, after all.

what was that ejay thing? thats was on ps2.

i seen banners of it on paul van dyks dj booth in the berlin loveparade.

consoles today certainly could host semi-professional production tools. and realistic and accessible dj games would be no bother too. it would just take a braver developer to do so, not a complete whore of one.

also theres a difference between a dj game (mixing) and a producing game/sim - which would be less fun.

noone is talking about cutting or scratching. that beyond the skill of most proffesional djs out there. never mind your average punter. its the mixing of two tracks as one that is fun.

on the channel 4 program 'faking it' some (tasty) posh countryside bird got lessons from anne savage, within a week she won the challenge and all 3 panelists picked her over 2 employed club djs.
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09
Not sure about consoles being able to do that - don't PS3s and 360s only have 512mb of RAM? Plus, I'm not sure how powerful their onboard sound tech is. Anyway, DJH and GH aren't about production or creation.

EDIT

Sorry, just read the rest of your post. Good point about the production sim. That would be dull, long, and really really hard.

And Faking It - come on. It was a reality TV show. I think maaaaaaaybe it can't be 100% relied on to show what actually happens in real life...
darry on 6 Oct '09
if the DS or PSP can do it, im sure the ps3 would handle it.

and didnt say the activision games were about production or creation - just said they were a cop out.

on faking it, the bitch conducted a 30 minute dj set, in a real club, with real audience.

she was given choice of tracks, the headphones and was up on the decks on her own (two vinyl turntables, not cdjs)

she done better than the other two djs, and all 3 panelists choose one of the other 2 as 'fakes'.

there was no trickery.

Rave EJay was this thing you could get on the PC - I remember messing around with it years ago (probably late 90's). It was basically a no-frills sequencer with some built in samples, so you could build tracks.

It wasn't all that special, to be honest - but, I do dimly recall them putting out a Hip-Hop EJay thing that came with a turntable that you could use for scratching and the like.

In terms of using consoles for production tools - isn't Acid a Sony product? (although, it does use the .bak MS SQL file format).

Smile
ParmaViolet on 6 Oct '09
I remember eJay - PS3 or Xbox could certainly handle that, but that was just loops. My mobile phone can (literally) do that.

This is all silly anyway, I guess my point was that if you want to record/produce professional music, you're going to need Logic or similar, not anything on a console. Garage Band is the nearest compromise I suppose.

As I see it, DJH combines cutting, sampling and scratching, making the much harder parts of DJing possible, whilst still keeping the essence of what would actually have to be done. It's going to sell millions whatever happens, but I reckon it'll probably be pretty fun whilst it does it.

Not that I'll buy it, I'll just have a go drunk at a mate's house.

Same as Guitar Hero.
darry on 6 Oct '09
there is a korg synthesizer on the DS, rockstars beaterator thing on PSP, and ejay was available on the ps2.

all of they platforms suck power-wise.

this gen could easily host some innovative music production tools.

DJH has nothing like authentic cutting or scratching - get that out your head!

(soundforge! wavelab FTW)
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09
P.S. Yeah Sony do own Acid - they bought a whole load of sound programmes a few years back. I still have Acid, but never use it any more (although it's pitch-shifting and time stretching is still pretty handy) but I do use Soundforge, which they bought at the same time. Still one of the best waveform editors around.
darry on 6 Oct '09
I have the Korg DS thing, it's pretty cool, but there's not scope for using live audio. Same as Beaterator, they're just basic synths bundled with a sequencer and some loops. Gimme some inputs! I'm sure you could build something for consoles, but it'd probably be rubbish. I'd prefer DJ Hero and my PC with proper music tools.

I still like Acid, but I really only use it as a 'notepad' - just jotting down ideas so I don't forget them. I really can't be bothered with all the sound options, it's hard enough just trying to balance amps and effects!

I've got a few mates that are crazy about all this stuff though - they'll sit for hours listening to the same loop and making minute changes to it.....that sort of thing gives me a headache.

Ooops - Double post.....
ParmaViolet on 6 Oct '09
software already exists (has done for a decade) that lets you mix tracks together - with all kinds of 'stabilizer options' to help you out.

midi controllers already exist that let you map the software controls to phsyical k**bs and switches.

all that would need to be done is create a user-friendly GUI for beginners, and it would be more fun as well as rewarding.

but dj hero is just - as you conceed - a peice of mindless disposable 'entertainment'. enjoy.
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09
I'm not judging it until it goes gold and the reviews start coming in, but my biggest worry about this would be that it doesn't let YOU mix, it tells you how to mix the way THEY want you to.

So you'll be crossfading when the prompt comes up, and you'll likely get booed off if you try to work on instinct. That's where DJing has a little more freeform scope than guitar - your riff needs to stay intact as a riff, but as long as the beat fits you can flick between tracks as much as you like.

And removing that would be a serious hobbling of any pseudo-DJ ability.
Dajmin on 6 Oct '09
I don't see why it has to be any more 'mindless' and 'disposable' than any other game. MarioKart ain't much like driving, but it's got nice bright colours and is good with mates. Why can't this be exactly the same?

And saying DJing has more 'freeform scope' than guitar - I'm very sorry, but that is one of the single most ridiculous things I have every heard on a message board. All musical instruments have massive scope for expression. Your riff does not have to 'stay a riff' you can change it in a thousand ways, and as for rhythm, soloing, chord inversions, intonation, effects, velocity...

My main point is that it's a game. As long as it's fun, it's done it's job.
darry on 6 Oct '09
Let me say this again:
IT'S A GAME!
If you want to be a DJ go and buy the right gear, but if you just want to have a bit of fun, something that is easily accessible to anyone that you may be in the company of get DJ hero. If you don't see the point in DJ Hero, that doesn't mean that everybody feels that way. I don't see the point in a fleshlight but some people do.
Mr S0L0 D0L0 on 6 Oct '09
thing is mixing for real is already fun and easily accessible.

thats why they could have represented it faithfully in a GAME.

you cant faithfully represent guitar playing in a game unless you have expensive technology costing way more than what is acceptable, which in any case would be inaccessible to your average punter without guitar skills.

anyone could pick up mixing very easily, especially if the software had auto-sync features etc.

the fleshlight, in your case would be inserted up your arse. perfect for the kind of sucker that would even consider spending money on this heap of balls. your getting shafted either way.
svd_grasshopper on 6 Oct '09
This is a bit like arguing with a christian.
darry on 6 Oct '09
anyone could pick up mixing very easily, especially if the software had auto-sync features etc.

Yeah but they wouldn't be able to mix these specific songs in in the way they're done in a short amount of time and for me that's what will make Dj Hero fun to play.

Anyway back on topic......that's a great line up of songs I'm loving that Beastie boys have provided two brand new songs for it. Very Happy
The_Jaster on 7 Oct '09
Lets be honest about this, std_bottomhopper has turned this forum and many others into the "My opinion is fact" forum, just because you feel a certain way doesn't make it so.

Why buy football games? Just buy a football.
Why buy driving games? Go on a track day.
Why buy FPS's? Join the army.
Actually, why play games at all?

Fact is we do play games and the majority of us have fun, the rest argue about the point of certain games, which console a game is best on, or which console has the best exclusives. I'm buying DJ hero and I'm going to have fun playing it, I have no interest in being an actual DJ so I don't need the real deal, much in the same way I don't want to actually shoot a gun and kill someone so I don't join the army but I still enjoy Call of Duty etc...
