It may have been banned in Australia but that hasn't stopped Valve holding back on the ad spend for Left 4 Dead 2. "Based on the strength of pre-orders, Left 4 Dead 2 will be the fastest-selling product in Valve's history," said big boss man Gabe Newell. "Left 4 Dead 2 has consistently run at 300% of Left 4 Dead's numbers."

Marketing man Doug Lombardi added up the figures: "We'll be supporting Left 4 Dead 2's launch with a $25 million campaign. Left 4 Dead 2 has already set the record for greatest number of pre-orders in our company's history, and we're still over a month out from shipping."
EA's getting in on the fun too. "Left 4 Dead 2 is expected to once again exceed everyone's expectations and be an industry best title on PC and Xbox 360 for the year," said David DeMartini, general manager of EA Partners. "With Left 4 Dead and now Left 4 Dead 2, Valve has created one of today's most compelling video game experiences and leading entertainment franchises."
We'd love to see most of that $25 million splashed over these very pages, for obvious reasons. But what would you like to see it spent on? Zombie shopping mall make-overs?
I can't wait for this. L4D was probably my favorite game of last year, and I am still playing it to death!
Have you noticed that that film 'Zombieland' has conincdentaly been released within a month of L4D2, and all the posters seem to be reminice of the fairground level, 'Dead Carnival'?
He'd make a bigger profit if it went to Xbox 360 AND PS3.
What a fat idiot.
Valve don't make games for the PS3.
I know. Their loss.
Microsoft's gain.
I like this game. Keep it going.
The Boxcar Rebellion's bonus
Not since Counter-Strike: Source was released, have I been tempted to buy an online-only shoot fest (which incidentally came packaged with my HL2 copy so no additional cost). Buying it seperately would have been harder to justify for me. L4D2 does look like a lot of fun though and since it is going to be released relatively soon after L4D1, it has been easy to decide whether to get on the boat or wait. I'm not firmly committed yet but the temptation is certainly there.

Seriously, KFD, if you havn't played L4D before, you really shoud as it is so much fun, and is packed with all the charisma and charm typical of Valve. Personally, I think it was of the best ever games made (along with HL2).

Cheers, Monty, however I'm more inclined to just wait for L4D2 since it should be out before too long and appears to offer a more complete gaming experience.
KFD, I assume you'll be getting it on PC. If you haven't got gold there is no point in buying it on the 360. My mate got it from Lovefilm and never played it online. He "couldn't see what all the fuss was about"!!! I think L4D will get cheap on Steam when L4D2 is out - it was £12 on the weekend.
I haven't looked forward to a game this much since... probably the excitement of waiting for the wii to come out.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure Insomniac just make games for Sony, but are independant.
not interested in L4D at all... but what is counter strike source like?
does it look horrid today? (on max settings)
was think of getting it, if it still stands up. dunno if its worth installing steam for.
CS:S is one of the greatest games ever. It's not the prettiest, but the gunplay is spot on. However if you just buy it now you will hate it and get raped as it is the most competitive shooter since CS.
Also it has thousands of maps, 100s of mods from betting on which team will win, to zombie mods and mods with no shooting at all like xtreme climb and surfing. It has maps where everything is made of glass and one grenade can send people falling to their deaths. It has the battle of helms deep (from LOTR)with shotguns. It has football maps with a giant football that you knife to the other goal, with no shooting. Because CS is a mod, they have made it the most mod friendly game out there so there.
Seriously, it's like 30 games in one. The graphics aren't that good by today's standards, but they are good enough to play without noticing them.
I'm surprised L4D2 wasn't named L4D2010 as it seems likely with it's popularity, profit margins and ease to pump out a sequel, the first person shooter equivalent of a sports game. If Valve keep adding an extra level to each generation maybe in four years time we'll actually be able to purchase a proper full length game of 8+ hours! Who knows, if we're lucky, within a couple of years we'll get treated to a modern game engine. The game is undeniably fun (with decent players) in co-op but it's one of the biggest rip-offs in terms of cost/time to finish. Gotta hand it to Valve, they're clever businessmen. But I hope this yearly updated, old game engine, short campaign, full price, doesn't stink up the whole industry. The game industry is really starting to sink it's teeth into the larger captive market it has to make profit from these days.

I think this is why I have never ended up playing it, as I can imagine just going on-line and getting mashed and then berrated by my 'team mates' for not know what I am doing.

And Insomniac are what? Skinny and intelligent?
Sony owns Insomniac, MS doesn't own Valve.
From their own website
"Insomniac Games is an independent videogame developer that has released award-winning hits for 15 years that have sold over 32 million copies worldwide."
This would say otherwise, but hey that ok, this is after all Sony we are talking about and they cant do anything wrong, can they?

Thanks Ric, and yes, should I decide to get L4D2 it will be for the PC.

CS: Source was literally jaw dropping when it first came out compared to its predecessor. It's not state of the art any longer, however it still looks pretty good and should easily meet, if not surpass, "medium" graphics today (although that is a somewhat subjective barometer).
I have started playing CS: Source again after a lengthy hiatus which seems to come and go ever 2 years or so. Perhaps I've become jaded, but it just doesn't seem to hold the same appeal for me anymore, and while I haven't played any of the L4D games yet, L4D2 videos do seem to hint at a gamestyle that I might find more appealing today.
CS: Source shouldn't be that expensive today, so why not give it a try?
P.S. CrispyLog is spot on in regards to being pummeled online by veteran players, which can be extremely frustrating even if you have played before and simply gotten rusty.

There is going to be a L4D2 demo coming soon, so give that a bash. Seriously, if you are into Valve gmaes, I'm sure you will like it.

"Team-mates" is used liberally. One of the frustrating aspects of CS: Source, is the often pandemic lack of team coordination. If just half the other team gets its act together it will often result in a massacre. Effective voice chat (read: muted all other players that interfere) can certainly help, and it can be a joy when played with people you have developed a rapport with and thus can act as a erstwhile team mates that watch out for each other.

Valve dont make PS3 games for a very good reason. Unfortunately for those who bought the Orange Box on the PS3, they know this all too well.
The development kits werent to the taste of Valve (Devs' frequent that PS3 is harder to build for), plus, they failed to see a significant market and hence support fell by the wayside, as it was much too time consuming and expensive.
They wouldnt make more money...they would lose it. So, no, Gabe isn't the idiot here.

New profile but same old xbot fantasy s**te.
I'm not so sure about there being no market for Valve games on the PS3, but what he says about Valve not wanting to develop for the PS3 through lack of support comes straight from the horses mouth.
Surely that's their prerogative. God forbid a developer should make a decision off their own back rather than bowing down to the publisher
