PreviousE3: Mario Galaxy 2 as big as original, due 2010 Miyamoto talks "experimental" Wii Zelda  Next

E3: Multiplayer Mario overdue, says Miyamoto

Been on the cards for years
Speaking at a behind-closed doors press briefing, Miyamoto said that multiplayer Mario has been on the cards for years.

"I've been working on Mario titles for the past 20 years, and there's something that I've been wanting to do during the entire time I've been working with Mario," he revealed (thanks ONM).

"What I've been wanting to do for so long is re-create the single player gameplay you get with a Mario game with multiplayer."

And he has with the new four-player Wii game. "With pretty much every Mario project I work on we usually start out with some kind of experiment with a multiplayer mode, but at the end of the day we end up putting that aside to concentrate on the single player.

"This is the first time we've been able to do this sort of multiplayer game. Depending on which level you are in, there are places where you will play more co-operatively and areas where you will play competitively. It's a unique balance. The gameplay will seem familiar but there are some really interesting new tricks and ideas that we've incorporated into the title."

does this remind anyone else of the old the multiplayer sonic games for the mega drive?

Doesn't seem like its come that far in last 15 years??

You say that like its a bad thing.

This looks like it'll be great fun. So long as you can pick your character like in mario bros 2.

Shame they didn't call it super mario bros 4. would stir up a bit more nostalgia.

It looks interesting and I really wanted a port of the first New SMB game from the DS to the Wii. But this looks like it may be a bit too simplistic. I don't like the fact that there is not much penalty in dieing if any at all. And I don't really see what the point in just competing for coins is. If they gave each character another 1 up, then I could see. I'll keep an eye on this one to see how it turns out.

I actually think it looks pretty good. Looks like Sonic Team should be watching and learning.

I just worry that it could get really confusing with 4 people on the one screen. LBP is a nightmare on one box with just 2 people, I can't begin to imagine what it's like to keep track of your own character in environments like that.

But it looks good. Classic 2D Mario gameplay using the newer tech to push what the levels throw at you.

dieing has never really been much of a penalty in mario. Considering you can generally accumulate lives very easilyin the early stages.

I think this could be really fun. And how difficult seems dependant to an extent of how many people are playing it.

When it was just mario it looked like a port of new super mario bros on the ds.

It doesn't look like the greatest game ever made but its bound to be bloody good fun. Sure as soonas it gets popular it'll get written off as casual though just like mario kart has.

I disagree, I thought Mario Bros 3 was very challenging and 1 ups weren't that easy to come by. I suppose you could repeat a few easy levels over and over and over again early on. But it could take up a lot of time and would get dull after a while. I don't know, I think I am just hoping for something a little more old school.

It does look like it could be fun. But I still don't see the point in competing for coins and what not. It looks some what like an old 2d Mario game. And with that, I'd just like to be challenged to the point where I get to see the game over screen once in a while.

This looks set to do to Mario what 4 swords did for Zelda, and thats definitely a good thing imo.

i see what you mean. competing for coins does seem a bit lame. But there is just as much cool cooperative stuff too.

Mario 3 was bloody hard towards the end. However getting there wasn't very hard if you used the whistles.

Still happy to see another side scrolling mario though.

Its probably because Super Mario World is officially known as SMB 4..

I thought this was going to be a port of the DS game but after watching some videos of it, the levels appear to be all new. I think so anyway. I'm still a little unsure about that but if the levels are new, then I may pick this up..

Question though: is it a disc game or WiiWare? I'd prefere the latter to be honest...

I personally didn't really like the DS version much (apart from the blue shell) and this just looks like the DS version with a few new power ups and multiplayer. It should belong on the DS not on the Wii and even though 4 players is usually better in most games I think this should just stick to two with Mario & Luigi.

Or atleast add someone else other then 2 Toads... (Unless I read that wrong)

This looked pants at E3, but I guess that was a combination of low res stream and the relatively early level they were playing.
And Cammie, of course.

This looks excellent really. Pure fun.

agreed- she had all the charisma of a wet flannel dripping with urine...

Im hyped for this though - think I'll enjoy playing through this with my girlfriend immensely. The multiplayer should really add to the fun. You innovate franchises and keep them fresh by always adding something new with each sequel.

Activision take note...
