Sean Lock to present Joysticks

'8 Out Of 10 Cats' comedian to make us laugh at Golden Joysticks '09
Sean Lock, regular face on Channel 4's '8 Out Of 10 Cats', is the comedian charged with making the Golden Joystick Awards funny.

If you don't recognise him, Sean Lock's a British Comedy Award and Time Out Comedy Award winner, and as well as '8 Out Of 10 Cats' he's also known for showing his face in BBC's 'QI'.

"The 2009 awards are already the most successful in its rich history with a record breaking 970,000 votes so far having been cast by gamers in a celebration of the year's best video games," says the blurb.

"Featuring 15 gamer-voted categories, the event is the world's longest-running video games awards, first held back in 1982. With just a few tables remaining, almost 800 guests will be entertained at the ceremony. Votes cast now at www.goldenjoystick.com will decide who scoops a prestigious Golden Joystick when the winners are announced at the ceremony at London's Park Lane Hilton on Friday, 30th October. Voting for the awards closes on October 26th 2009."

Sean Lock is a ledge. He is very good on 'TV Heaven, Telly Hell' and his appearences in The Mary Whitehouse Experience were also very amusing.

A good appointment.

I dunno, Sean Lock is certainly not as sick as Frakie Boyle but he is one of only a few of these 'panelist' comedians that genuinely makes me laugh.

Im not sure Mock the Week will go down the drain (it might give the others some mic time Wink ) but it certainly wont be the same without Frankie ranting abut something.

the quick fire round at the end, frankie was constantly up there. joke after joke. others had to keep stepping back as he took over the mic. noone else could get a shot.

he is getting his own sketch show supposedly.

Thats my point, watch an old episode on Dave and he constantly butts in when others are trying to tell a joke or a story, the last round is funny just to watch him almost push the others out of the way to get to the mic Laughing .

Still, that Russell fellow has been getting funnier as the seasons go on, he should hopefully get more mic time and if they get the right replacement (hello David Mitchell) then it should be alright still (i hope Crying or Very sad ).

Sean Lock? Frankie Boyle? Feckin Bob Hope?

Nothing is as funny as trying to post a comment on here between 5 - 5:30 Laughing !

The obligatory CVG double post.

I thank you, im here all week Very Happy !

Well, I like Sean Lock - He's got a good consistant style of comedy!

Admittedly I quite like Frankie Boyle too. But they're both pretty well known/talented comedians.

Having watched last years awards though - I found it a little sad that fewer laughs came about.

I laughed, but I felt sorry for Frankie - I hope Sean can get a few more laughs.

I don't think it was Frankie's fault that only so many laughed (Or seemed to) as I imagine those who were there hadn't come for a good laugh & may've been less interested in humour.

But well done to Frankie last year for doing a good job & good luck to Sean!

if that david mitchell is from peep show, i hate that stuck up posh prick. he isnt even funny and he used to wince and refrain from laughing at frankies sick jokes as if not to support them so he doesnt get tarred. pussy.
svd_grasshopper on 8 Oct '09
For once I agree with you SVD, Mock the week will be s**te without Frankie and Sean Lock is about as funny as Aids in a leper colony.

Perhaps and only perhaps, this is part of his comedy routine?

Anyhoos, comedy is 10x more subjective than Gaming, so each to their own (no one beats the late great Bill Hicks anyway, cause I say so!!!)

David Mitchell is freaking hilarious! He seems to mix intelligence with pure randomness. That sketch on 'That Mitchell and Webb look' with the guy who can telepathically throw biscuits is both genius and stupid. I love that show... And Peep Show too...

Ahem- anyway, I think Sean Lock can be pretty funny too. In a more relaxed, chilled out kinda way- on the other hand Frankie Boyle can be hilarious if only for the shock value of his gags.

David Mitchell is great and Peep Show is probably my favourite show at the moment - really loving the new series. I'll be seeing Frankie Boyle in Plymouth next year and I do really like his stuff, but I don't think he was the only good thing about Mock the Week, I think Dara O'Brien is brilliant too - I really cannot see the point of a Frankie Boyle sketch show either, but I guess the BBC really wouldn't just let him do stand-up...too risky.

I also like Sean Lock - anyone see 15 Stories High?

Bill Hicks is amazing but for me George Carlin is unbeatable. In my eyes, Carlin is god whilst Hicks is jesus.

None of em could hold a candle to Billy Conelly. The big yin was the best in the business in his hay day.

His rant against marketing folks is one of the funniest routines that ive ever hear and sadly very true Laughing .

I'd rather have someone present the awards who was actually genuinely interested in gaming. Fair enough, it helps to have someone who people will recognise, but when they end up stumbling blindly around a subject they know nothing about it's just embarrassing.

If my band had made me famous already, I'd present them. Bear that in mind guys Smile

I really like Sean Lock. Shame Boyle will be leaving Mock The Week, but I'm sure it will survive.

I've seen him do standup a few times on TV, and I thought he was crap. Much better when something is fired at him as opposed to simply trying to deliver the longest, most offensive metaphors you can.

Peep Show is consistently funny. I didn't realise not being working class excludes you from being a comic.

Who's the canadian thats been on Hugh and Frankie's team a few times, he's hilarious.

Never mind, its Tom Stade. Very different type of humour to the others that have been on the show.

Bill Hicks was a legend. Watched one of his shows, think it was one of his last, on Comedy Central recently and i haven't laughed that hard in ages. Loved his rant about smokers and cannabis. Only p**s thing was my sky+ box missed the last 10 minutes of it. And to think i hadn't even heard of the guy before reading Preacher.

And David Mitchell can be quite funny when he wants to be. Though i do agree with SVD that the show will go down without Mr Boyle, i still couldn't understand how the hell the other team won so many shows when Frankie and Hugh are always the funniest c**ts on there. Its a fix i say!

Agree with the marketing sketch, but Gays in the military is probably my favourite:
