An Activision energy drink promotion has dated the first piece of Modern Warfare II downloadable content.
Energy drink 'Monster' is flogging, among other things, "5000 MW2 Map Pack codes", which it reveals is planned for release in spring 2010. You'll probably be bored of the vanilla disc maps by then. Maybe.
A message on the side of the new Monster cans reads: "Creator Infinity Ward hooked us up with an advanced copy of MW2 and we were so stoked on the game we put it on our can." We reckon money was probably involved too.

Hey CVG staff members, while I do appreciate it's a somewhat slow news season lately, how about asking Activision directly what sort of DRM we can expect from them on "MW2"? Indeed, why don't you make that a standard question along the likes of "When will it be released, etc." for all present and future PC games? It's a pivotal factor for me when I decide whether I will buy a game or not, and I'm confident I'm not the only one whom would like to know such details in advance. Cheers.

And the thing you clearly don't understand about this in game advertising thing is this: of course its about money and maximising revenue streams but that's because a AAA game costs millions of £ to make. The more revenue streams publishers and developers have the more confident they feel about making the initial investment in the product. No confidence = no risk = same tired crap churned out over and over again. Building confidence is good for creativity you moron.

No, that is not what I'm suggesting. I'm at a loss as to how you came to equate that sentiment with my earlier request/suggestion to CVG that inquiring about what sort of DRM scheme can be expected in a given PC game somehow equals asking them not to report on something until all the details are known.
Incidentally, just because someone has more info doesn't mean they'll share it, even if they/it are a news site. I have some trust, but I also harbour a certain amount of suspicion and skepticism on any given day.

Make no mistake: I have absolutely no sympathy towards the companies that screw over their paying customers with out-of-control DRM; they deserve all the crap they have coming, IMO. However, if they don't attack me I'm fine with not attacking them and even paying them for their work - that seems fair to me. If I have to go to the pirates and hackers in order to get a legally purchased game to work, then there is something terribly wrong and I might as well not spend a single cent on the product and just go for the full, "free" pirated version.
So , if I read this right, they will be charging for map packs on console (free on PC again for sure), after having fleeced people for an extra £15 up front? Im not that desperate to play this game and I am rapidly going off the idea completely. CoD 4 was a very good game, but that was a time when there were not so many good games on the Market. Now there are plenty and plenty coming out too. It will be really interesting to see people response to this!
Also, its only the UK they are charging more, in Spain it’s the ”normal”, but expensive price of 65€.
So the game isn't even released yet and they are already announcing maps. The question can fairly be asked why arnt they included on the disc to begin with? Yet another example of dlc being abused. So, you pay 55 quid(if Activision have their way)for the game(15 more than the r.r.p of a full price game)and then another god knows what for missing content. Whats next, paying for the options screen, or level by level? F@:* you Activision.

Not a bad idea, except it is still in violation of the law since I would have acquired the game through an illegal distribution means. Of course, the prosecution would have to prove that the money sent to the developer or publisher was done to compensate for an illegal download and not just as a "gift"...but it might be enough grounds for them to get a warrant to seize and examine my PC. Besides all of that legal eagle stuff, I rather like having the official DVD casing.
This isn't stirring anything up, most people with a brain knew the maps would be a timed exclusive for Microsoft. They'll probably be exclusive for about a month or two, nothing major. If they were properly exclusive, there would be a backlash.
