The PS3 game that wants to be Zelda

Footage of new RPG reveals uncanny similarities to Zelda
Below is gameplay footage of a new PS3 RPG game from From Software, titled 3D Dot Game Heroes. Notice anything familiar about it.

Let's see. Ignoring the typical RPG top-down isometric view and sword/shield weapons, we're seeing heart-based health and green magic meter, arrows and hookshot items, and bombs used to blow open entrances to caves, complete with the reveal chime and everything.

It's out in Japan this coming November but there's no word of a western release.

It might be time for Zelda creator Eiji Aonuma to up-end some desks.

Don't under estimate the power of playstation 3! Forget Uncharted 2- THIS is where it's at!

Total Rip Off, Sony should be ashamed and be shut down. No pudding either.

I always classed it as an adventure game. Sums it up well enough.

I am guessing this will be a PSN store game or whatever they are called... well, maybe not. They'll probably get sued first. Smile

I don't think From Software is Sony, please think before posting.

Yep, that sure does look very similar to Zelda LTTP.

I'm sold. Very Happy

It looks like every old style adventure/RPG game. So you could say it's ripping off Secret of Mana/Evermore as well.

But it's far more likely to be a homage, or simply inspired by. Otherwise Nintendo should be suing Chair Entertainment for stealing Metroid.

I mean really. Why do you guys let some away with it but not others?

Thank god you posted this when you did, I've just cancelled my order for uncharted 2 and am going for this beauty instead.

Saved myself a few bob too! Thanks guys!! Smile

It's a game where you play the role of Link. Ipso facto: RPG Razz

The item system (ie, the hookshot & bomb functions) are very Zelda-esque, but it just doesn't have the same overall style as Zelda. Also, didn't people say all this about Dark Cloud on the PS2?
lordirongut on 1 Oct '09
It looks like a Net Yaroze game that's been given the HD treatment. My favourite RPG was that one where you played the role of the minesweeper.

Y'know, Minesweeper.

Ah, Dark Cloud, fond memories of that game.

Yeah man, you tell him! Zelda is just as much an RPG as the likes of Mario (a game where you play the role of Mario), Sonic (a game where you play the role of Sonic), Metroid (a game where you play the role of Samus Aran), et all! Very Happy

Looks like some people disagree, but this to me looks like an HD version of a Link to the Past. Only thing that was missing was the infuriating music.

my fav RPG is the one where you play the role of Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, Sherry Birkin and Claire Redfield

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought - Link to the Past or Link's Awakening. That shot of the beach or whatever it is looks like it could be a direct lift.

Saw the trailer a couple of weeks ago and thought of A Link To The Past myself - it just looked way too similar. Even the music itself is similar in tone and style to the classic as well. I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't tried to sue them.

What is this - LEGO Zelda?

Too bad it doesn't have cute cartoony cell shaded graphics like Windwaker or Phantom Hourglass.

If it did, I'd buy that at a high price!

Only thing that was missing was the infuriating music.
I liked that music!

Oh man this looks pap! Can't that be shoved onto the Wii plz or can it be given away free as a PC flash game.

Exactly. When you think about it the term RPG is a bit ambiguous and not particularly representative of the genre it's meant to represent.

How can anyone say Zelda isn't an RPG? Tards!!!

Well, when Zelda 1 came out it was coined as an action-adventure, and that's what it still is. Rpg's are called rpg's because of their similarities to table-top rpg's, meaning the level-up system, stats, hit/damage percentages etc. Even Castlevania: SOTN is more of an rpg than Zelda, although that's called an action-rpg.

You may have always viewed Zelda an as rpg, but it simply isn't. Except for Zelda 2.
Shin_Kojima on 2 Oct '09
There are some Zelda similarities there but why are we labelling that as a bad thing? Surely it's nice to have a few old school style games.

I'm quite excited by this actually, it's like a pretty nifty adventure game. I'll totally get it if it is released outside of Japan, for the right price of course.

Not all table top RPGs have level up systems, but it's the character progression that usually makes an rpg. That said, computer based rpgs and table top ones are quite a different beast, and while some very clearly fit the mould, others are quite ambiguous. For example, why is something like Dead Space not an rpg? You play as one character, who's power progresses throughout the game (in terms of gun power ups), getting picks up along the way too.

Likewise Zelda has similar power progression - acquire health upgrades (hearts), more magical abilities, etc etc.

I guess the real question is, just what IS a computer rpg?
