Nintendo is offering free Wii repairs to a number of users that have experienced problems with their consoles after trying to install the latest system update.
According to numerous reports on the Nintendo Of America support forums, users have seen their consoles freeze during the process of installing system update 4.2. A number of users have then been unable to reboot their consoles.
While some of the problems can be attributed to modified systems, a number of consumers are reporting issues with newly bought units.
"Some of you have reported problems with your Wii console after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2. The symptoms most people are describing usually occur when the Wii has been modified. However, some of you also mention your system has never been modified," wrote a Nintendo Of America tech support member.
"We'd like to help get your system working properly again. If you're experiencing problems with your Wii console after downloading Wii System Menu 4.2, and you believe your system has not been modified, please give us a call. If we find that you have a normal system and the update caused your system to not work, we'll repair it at no charge.
"Please call our Customer Service Department at your earliest convenience, 1-800-255-3700. We are open 6 AM to 7 PM, Pacific Time, 7 days a week."
These problems aren't only occurring in America, with Nintendo UK telling us that it is "aware of a very small number of reported problems with Wii consoles after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2".
The company said that it too will offer free repairs to unmodified systems damaged via the update process. It said that consoles should not be returned to its customer service department without contacting the division first for advice. Contact details follow:

this was supposed to hit the homebrewers but the community had the 4.2 update beat within 48 hours.
what it has done is screw with the boot 2 and by all accounts nintendos boot code is glitchy as hell, try the hackmii 0.5 installer and waninkoko 4.2 firmware instead it seems safer than nintendos own update.
it says something though when the community's boot code tops nintendos own.
i feel sorry for the innocent people who've updated and been bricked for nothing. the likes of myself and others will wait a few days before updating just in case there's any adverse effects on the HBC.
at least nintendo and microsoft admit to their system update failures unlike sony bricking my ps3 with the last update. my wii has homebrew and usb loader so i would never update anyway. the only game i cant play is the new wii sports. saying that i have about 60 games on the HDD and they are all crap apart from the old AAA's like resident evil, mario galaxy and metroid. never play the thing anymore.
The only good games on the Wii, Galaxy is the exception, are the ones on the Virtual Console.
That is clearly not true.
Zack and Wiki is excellent, Zelda, Metroid Prime: Corruption, RE4+, Okami,Madworld, Boom Blox, Umbrella Chronicles,The Conduit,Dead Space Extraction, Super Paper mario,Mario Kart, Excite Truck, Super smash bros, and punchout are also great games. There are probably a load more that I can't think of right now too.
Plus Wiiware has some fantastic games like world of goo, bit.trip.beat, drift racers, monkey island etc etc.
I won't be updating mine just yet then. Not that its modified or anything. I just don't trust any company's c**k ups these days. I'll wait (it'll be pointless anyway I bet)...
Granted Zack and Wiki and Corruption were good. So was Twilight Princess (for a cube game). But Okami was originally a PS2 game, so you can't include that. And don't even get me started on Excite Truck.
Perhaps I should have said there haven't been any good games for quite some time. It started off well.

Well it doesn't say much as they're both trying to achieve different goals. It's a lot easier to code for something that essentially lets everything pass through it rather than a code that has to block various things and be pretty much closed off, while still letting somethings happen. Bugs are bound to arise -look at the windows history- Also the 'community's code' would be reverse engineered so they do have it slighter easier. By the way I don't hate community homebrew things, i'm quite a fan (I use firefox and others).
Also it is a shame with the 'clean' consoles getting bricked, i wonder if they wipe the flash drive clean?

However, Grand Slam Tennis is possibly the best tennis game I have ever played and that is quite a recent one. Also Wii Sports resort is fantastic fun when played with a group. Wiiware is getting better week on week.

Well that depends on what other tennis games you've played! What if Super Tennis on the SNES was the last Tennis game you played!

Well that is still one of the best ones in my opinion. However I have played many of them since the days of pong to the latest batch of tennis games. Grand Slam Tennis is fantastic when used with motion plus.
