360 Sky Player 'date' is "nothing new" - MS

MS responds to supposed Sky Player October release date
Microsoft has responded to reports that the Xbox 360 version of Sky Player will launch next month.

According to reports, the latest issue of Sky Magazine pens the 360 Player for release on Xbox Live in October, but a Microsoft spokesperson told us: "This is nothing new and the article in Sky magazine states the same news that we announced at E3.

So you still need a sky subscription to use this????
peetay on 28 Sep '09
Looking forward to this. I don't want to pay Ł40 a month for more television, so the idea of just using pay per view for the Football is very appealing for me.

It would be good if I can use my 360 as a freeview box too, as I can't get a good reception from an aerial in my flat.

Yep, it says it will allow subscribers access to the various Sky channels, so no free Sky Sports for new adopters I'm afraid!
Tonyb on 28 Sep '09
i thought they were giving reduced rates for people that wanted to have sky just through thier 360.

Might not be free but reduced sky sports wouldn't be bad either.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 28 Sep '09
Does this mean that I can tie my 360 up to my parents' Sky subscription even though they're at a different address? That would be handy...
altitude2k on 28 Sep '09
Looking forward to this, using my 360 as an extra skybox without having to use multi-room will be excellent.

Having my Sky/Live friends avatars sitting down chatting & throwing popcorn at each other during a movie or football match should be a laugh too! Very Happy

Does anyone actually have any idea as to how this will work? CVG? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
StonecoldMC on 28 Sep '09
What the hell is the point of this only being available to Sky subscribers? It's on the 360, not an iphone or PSP. Don't most people's 360s live in their lounger with their TV and skybox?

If this is the case, it's a huge pile of s**t in my opinion. I was interested in watching the odd footy match, PPV probably.

I will never get a sky subscription (if I was a multi billionaire I'd buy the footy rights, just to watch Sky crash and burn). Looks like I'll be sticking with iraqgoals, atdhe etc.

Hehe, thats what I'm hoping for too

You will download an app which will launch within the dashboard. You will then have a limited choice of near-live (approx 30 secs out) channels and then the majority of the content available on Sky Player. There are a number of cool other features and the standard is pretty sweet. At the moment I believe you will be allowed one XBOX per subscription. I havent seen anything yet which restricts the location of your XBOX to the address of the Sky subscription although this is something that can easily be enforced.
Seen the demos and now on the trial and all I can say is that it is sweet!

I'm not conviced it would be "easy". Surely MS would have to gather information on your IP address and then check that against all the ISP's databases of addresses, which is something they are usually very unkeen on doing. And then there's the issue of floating IP's...

This should be very good. I access occassionally Sky Player via my PC and the film section is fanastic.

It will just affectively mean that sky subscribers with an Xbox can have their Sky TV service as TV on demand, which is great for me.

Also picture quality should be fine as the BBC iPlayer on the PS3 is not much different than watching one of the lower bandwidth channels such as UK Gold or Dave.

Fair point regarding the IP tracking. There needs to be a certain level of control as Sky have obligations regarding who can see the content they provide. The checks done to verify where someone is accessing content from is used on the majority of on-line content providers such as iPlayer, Sky Player etc.
If you meet the criteria, TV/Broadband subscription and XBOX live gold account I cant imagine either MS or Sky will be too bothered. This is very much a work-in-progress and will change and expand as people start using the service. There will more than likely be a PS3 version in the new year.

You can track IPs by location. I don't know how it works, but I once saw my location as 'Upper Holloway', not just London, which is pretty specific.

I just put my IP in on this website, and it came up with London. I don't know how specific it is for people living in smaller towns though. http://webtools.live2support.com/misc_locate_ip_address.php

Surely if it's one 360 per Sky account and you need information from the account holder then it's not really going to affect them too much. The Sky player is exactly the same as I have used my parent's account on my PC to watch the odd film.

microsoft needs to get there ass in gear they do not have enough time in the year to release 4 applications to xbox live if they are meant to being spreading them out. if i was them i would have done it this way Sky Player in September, Facebook in October,Twitter in November and Last Fm in December thats spreading it out enough not particulaly in that order but you get the idea because i can see microsoft putting them out 1 after another in the end when they said they wont do that.

General locations (even though they can be fairly specific) is one thing - I think that's down to the first X numbers in the address. But narrowing it down to an address is something entirely different - otherwise every fanboy's house would have been egged a long time ago!
altitude2k on 28 Sep '09
@altitude2k
You will need to login with a sky online account like you do at the moment veiw your bills and to watch sky player which is linked to your sky subscription so just use your parents username and password when you set it up.
pp82 on 28 Sep '09
It will probably be similar to the online Sky Player. You can register it on up to 5 Xbox’s.
It will be free for current multi room subscribers or about Ł10 for non multi room subscribers.
DaRockwilder1 on 28 Sep '09
doesnt some of the sky content come through your house phoneline anyway??? maybe thats how theyd do it, basically if the phonenumber of the house is tied into the sky account holder then youre good to go and get all the features for no extra charge, if you havent got a sky account tied to the house phone number already then you'll have to PPV??
headspin on 28 Sep '09
So basically, I may as well pay Ł10 a month for sky multiroom? Confused
Mark240473 on 28 Sep '09
this is pointless, you'll get the free channels that you get on a digibox which u can pick up for a fiver, but ul have to pay for sky sports, sky movies and channels like sky1, G.O.L.D, paramount etc etc, waste of time!
bunneyo on 28 Sep '09
unless you want said channels, or already have a sky subscription in which case it's great.

Extra features are always welcome as far as i'm concerned.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 28 Sep '09
I know the beta testers have to have a multi room subscription or sky broadband max to use it for sky sports
pp82 on 28 Sep '09
BBC iplayer would be a very useful new addition to the xbox
