Supercar Challenge Review

Too realistic for its own good
There are things we like about Supercar Challenge. In the face of razzle dazzle racers like Colin McRae: DIRT 2 and Need For Speed: SHIFT, dripping with over-the-top production values, it's refreshing to play an honest simulation racer.

Especially one that features a wealth of real-world circuits, a high-end line-up of motors like the Maserati MC12, Koenigsegg CCX, McLaren F1, and of course, enough Ferrari's to make the Sultan of Brunei jealous.

Learning curve
However, the actual driving - the meat of the game - left us disappointed. The simulation handling mode provides a real challenge - in fact, it goes a bit beyond. Turn off all the assists and you're opting for realism at the expense of gaming, but herein lies the game's biggest flaw.

In a real car, assessing braking distances, entry speeds to corners and whether your tyres are at the limits of their grip is a physical and aural experience that Supercar Challenge simply can't replicate.

Here, 70mph feels like 40mph, which makes all the difference between making a corner and sitting in a gravel trap. Yes, you can override judgement to overcompensate, but it just doesn't feel right.

This isn't the game's only problem either. Dense AI and a lacklustre damage model make matters worse. Supercar Challenge has a decent stab at attempting Gran Turismo-like racing, but it's still not front of the grid.

Not terrible, but not as good as racers like GT Prologue.

I played the beta for this, got to the first corner on the Nurbergring and went off, tried it again at crawl pace and still had trouble getting round the corner. think i managed about halfway around the track before i switched it off in disgust. Absolutle zero fun, and ultimatley isn't that what we play games for?

I was also in the beta (which I guess I can delete now) and I didn't have that much of a problem with control. But then I'm used to Live For Speed and Richard Burns Rally where you don't get assists.

The driving model is pretty solid, it has to be said. These are supercars, so they're going to be really twitchy. The more powerful the vehicle, the more smooth your driving has to be.

My problem was that the tracks felt a bit lifeless. The racing sim market is brutal, and with titles like Forza 3 and GT5 about to come out, you really need to do something amazingly special if you want to compete.

I go this game last week and I wanted to wait for the full game before making my mind up as to weatheror not the game is good and unfortunately its not.
The handling gets annoying after a few races and the manual gear change was just silly, having to press the button 5-7 times to get from 4th gear down to 1st was so annoying when you need to drop gears quickly for engine breaking.
The visuals I tried to not to let get to me but their awefull. It looks a couple of years old not like a new release. The sound, if you have ever been to a track and seen a race you would know how innacruate it is.
I tried to like it I really did but its been and gone for me now.

A six paragraph review? Wow, really comprehensive...

What I didn't like about the beta was the way that in 3rd person view, when you turned, the back end swung out, as though the car was steering from the back, sort of like a forklift truck. It looked silly in a game that said it was super realistic. Of course, most racing games do this, especially arcade games, but the only game I've seen that doesn't do this is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, I think.

ye had beta ,the handling was terrible.

This game = no.

I was in the beta (which still works but is called Lite Edition or something) and I do not work for System 3, but I just have to counter all this dissing. Wink

But first one issue I noticed in the beta (which I hope they have fixed); When a player got penalized for cutting corners, crashing into people etc. their car dropped speed immediately to 50kph or something, which is really annoying if you're doing 200+ kph in Au Rouge at Spa Francorchamps 20 meters behind the person cutting the corner.

@sfk1973 The handling was actually quite good. Maybe something's wrong your driving skills? The cars feel heavy, the handling is pretty much like SimBin's Race'07 on PC if you turn down the assists. It's refreshing to finally get more of a simulation.

@Fastcarrot You know you're not supposed to play racing games in 3rd person, right? Midnight Club and Burnout, excluded of course. Wink

@fresh191 So you're basically saying they have removed semi-auto gears, which are in the beta and do exactly what you want? The visuals are OK, I guess GT5 will look better, but it's for the racing thrills you're going to play this game, not to look at the track. If you're done with the game can I buy your copy?

@Dajmin The beta still works. Second most of your opinions, but one thing everyone seems to miss is the quality and code of conduct of the other human drivers in the online mode. Really great drivers (except for the occasional jerk crashing into people like what happens in GT5 Prologue all the time, but those idiots are weeded out pretty fast)

@ensabahnur Go back and play with Burnout, NFS or something. Obviously this game is not for you. SC is great fun if you're into simulation!

I had the Beta of this, and I didn't like it then.
only_777 on 16 Sep '09
I loved the beta I have to say and considered buying it but I'm happy tipping away on the two tracks in the demo every now and again. If you think the handling is crap it's because you suck. It's a sim, or near enough, and not everyone will see the fun in it but there are those who love it.
