Xbox Live prepares for Facebook/Twitter today

Mandatory system update lays down ground work
Microsoft mouthpiece Major Nelson sends word that a mandatory Xbox 360 update is set to land today, preparing consoles for the arrival of Facebook, Twitter and Last.FM features on Xbox Live.

"Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you'll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update," says the Major. "If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you'll be back online in a few moments.

"There are no new features or changes in this update. This update is preparation for additional system enhancements (Facebook/Twitter/Last.FM) that will arrive later this year."

As you can see the Xbox 360 social network functionality doesn't have a solid release date yet, though Microsoft's said that it will probably "spread out" the launches later this year.

Sometimes I'm amazed at how Microsoft gained their monopoly in the computer industry. I'm willing to bet that 99% of Xbox customers would rather have proper internet access than this utterly pointless and pathetic update. I'm rapidly growing into a customer waiting for an excuse to get Microsoft out of my life. Fortunately I don't use a PC or need one but I'm starting to resent them making money out of my gaming habit. If only the alternative weren't Sony, I'm all to ready to stop handing my money to these monkeys. Seriously who gives a flying f**k about Facebook that hasn't already got it on their computer!?!?!

It's a nice addition for those that would use it. Clearly you aren't one of those people, but are you so arrogant as to think that everyone else thinks the same as you? And then you even go on to say that them adding extra stuff for no additional cost is something that is making you hate Microsoft. I just cannot understand that mentality.

Seriously, if you don't like it then just don't use it.

Well, it will be interesting to see how Facebook integrates into the games on live. Also, there is some kind of seperate section for xbox lives friends. Also, if it is free, why knock it? I am quite happy for all this to be on Live. Also, I think the reason why it doesn't have full internet access is so it is harder for people to download games illegally, and harder to mod the software.

Bear in mind that not everyone has a PC, too.

ha ha, I need to learn other words other than 'also'!

ha ha, I need to learn other words other than 'also'!

Try 'additionally'. It is also seen as acceptable to use 'And,' after a full stop.

You can pay me with M&M's.

Why make it mandatory damn it. Evil or Very Mad
YCshinobi on 23 Sep '09
Yeah, seriously Jensonjet, chill the f**k out mate...

I actually got an app installed on my Android phone now which allows you to get status updates on your Live mates when they log in, what they're playing... Basically a nicely presented version of what you can get on xbox.com.

Integration with Twitter along these lines will be welcome - you can pick up when people are playing a game wherever you are, even if you don't have your 360 on.

Also last.fm is very good. I have that on both my PC and my phone, and it will allow me to play music I don't own that's tailored to my tastes through my 360 and my decent sound system (beats me tinny laptop speakers!)

As Monty said - it's free! What's the problem?!

I could have also used 'further more' which is one of my favorites.

Do you prefer peanut, or orginal m&ms? Ha ha
monty_79 on 23 Sep '09
But starting a sentence with a conjunction is bad grammar.

Oops.

I can't imagine someone would have their xbox online and not have a computer though, maybe in a house share I suppose. Best thing I can think of will be you'll be able to see what friends are playing online when you look at facebook, then you could fire up the 360 and play away.

I'm assuming links don't work, embedded videos etc won't work. If only MS knew somebody who made an internet browser of some sort.

I'll have peanut please. Laughing

These forumns are so negative....any bit of news that CVG give us is an excuse for people to moan. Microsoft don't have to give us Twitter or Facebook, but they are at no cost. If you don't want it, don't use it.

Anyone out there with some positive thoughts???

You should try using (in this context) 'example', rather than 'thing'. That's a nasty use of the English language. Wink

Too true! Especially when followed shortly by the word 'think'. Damn my clumsy grammar!

I think CVG should bring in a 'bad grammar' filter in addition to the swearing one.

svd_grasshopper what is your problem? every time i read an article about something to do with xbox, u come on here to spew ur biast rants in the name of all thats sony. it seems rather pathetic that you feel compulsed to come on here to slate the no.1 console simply because you did not choose to buy it and went for the more expensive underdog. maybe owning the most expensive console gives u a great sense of prestige. but do u really think anyone on a 360 article gives a s**t about your petty little arguments on here? and why do you even waste your time reading these articles since you obviously hate the 360, which is fair enough. everyone who's read your comments knows your a complete a*se already there's no need to prove the point any further. so why don't u just run along and rub your c**k on your ps3 all day you little gobs**te.

Adding proper internet access via a browser would allow people to choose to have Facebook, MySpace or whatever else they want from the net, for free. I'm not entirely sure why this concept is beyond you. Thank for insulting me because you disagree with my opinions. Troll away all you like but some of us actually have opinions and thoughts that differ from being grateful for anything and everything Microsoft so dearly honour us with. Oh, and as you would say, if you don't like what I write, don't read it. You insult me again because you disagree and I'll pick holes in everything you write, assuming you have any opinions.
