PS3 outsells 360 by three to one

11 fold jump in UK sales following Slim's launch
Sony's console records an 11 fold jump in UK sales following the launch of the new PS3 Slim.

Sony's PS3 recorded a massive week-on-week jump in sales during the week ended September 5, GfK Chart-Track has told Edge.

The increase follows the launch of the new PS3 Slim on Tuesday, September 1. According to a GfK Chart-Track spokesperson, the console outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 by three units to one during the week in question. PS3 sales outpaced those of Nintendo's Wii and DS Lite by the same amount.

Sales of the Xbox 360, which has also seen a recent price cut, increased by 29 percent week-on-week.

PS3 outsells Wii and DSi by 3:1 too.

Slow day again Mr CVG?

So a successful launch then. Well done sony.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 7 Sep '09
Hardly a surprise really. It is better value for money all round than the 360 if comparing the two. Let's see if it can keep up the momentum.

This Xmas is going to be a real fight!
JuiKuen on 7 Sep '09
In Japan it is 150k!

Shocked

Holy muck!
wildhook2 on 7 Sep '09
The ps3 is bar far the cheapest option now even if you ignore the blue-ray player. Ms has dropped the ball a little, they're still charging £60 for the wireless connector!
adgr19 on 7 Sep '09
Price lowered, people buy more PS3s and now PS3 outsells 360.

Simple logical deduction.
BenJy! on 7 Sep '09
Look for a similar inversion when the 360 slim is released.
altitude2k on 7 Sep '09
Not a surprise really, it'll be like this for at least a couple of months until the initial enthusiasm dies down.

It'll certainly do even better overseas(USA) considering they get if for about £190+.

I own the fat ps3 and a 360, but i wouldn't recommend anyone buys a 360 until early next year when i think we'll see microsoft roll out a very aggressive price cut on all models.
This price cut by sony will help them catch up and microsoft will certainly have to respond(and they will).
blagger on 7 Sep '09

except theres no slim 360 planned.

put it in an even smaller box. that'll improve reliability.
svd_grasshopper on 7 Sep '09
So that means the previous weeks, the 360 was doing about 4-1 over the PS3. And Sony have the audacity to claim the previous prices weren't killing the PS3?

Totally expected, either this will die down after the initial buzz or people will simply think that £50 extra is well worth it for a Blu-Ray player and free online gaming.
Being a 360 owner I think MS should reduce the Elite to £179 or possibly keep it at £199 but add in the wireless connector to keep themselves competitive.
Otherwise I think they'll struggle.
However we've yet to factor in Halo ODST which could boost hardware sales.
Totally off topic, whilst I like the new PS3 Slim look (I HATED that Spiderman 3 font on the old one) does anyone else think it looks too black? They should have the PS3 logo in electric blue or something. It just needs a dab of colour.

dannybuoy on 7 Sep '09
Well done to Sony, then. Like I said before, it benefits everyone if they are successful. More PS3s=more third party support, more people online etc. It might even force MS and Nintendo to drop prices and get the same effect. The only people this can benefit are us as gamers.
lordirongut on 7 Sep '09
Been tempted to pick one up... resisted.

I think i'll put the money towards upgrading my PC first, then we'll see. Personally I'd rather a PS3 over a 360 at the moment.

the next halo will sell well. but mostly to existing customers. any true halo fan would have a 360 already. dont think it will push hardware as much as you think. the pro was £160 a while ago.

you can buy HDD's seperates, and a black paint job isnt going to push sales.

sony are still making losses.... BAD for business if u ask me. ms should have looked at reliablity issues sooner. both companies are after your cash and tryin to exploit it DONT F**KIN say one is evil n the other isnt, they are as bad as each other you bunch of fanboys on both sides!!!!!
i'd rather have the origional PS3 as it looks better quality than the terrible looking slim. again i will say i have both machines so am not a fanboy... still prefer usin my 360 on the whole tho

it wont be long until the more popular opinion is that the slim is the better looker. i have changed my opinion a lot on it. the original ps3 is starting to look a bit bloated and unsophisticated next to the slim, which is very sleek and stylish.
svd_grasshopper on 7 Sep '09
Wow, a system is refined and cut in price and it sells more! Imagine that, I love the PS3 but find it hard to swallow how the PS3 fanboys are all in rapture after all this time of false dawns just because the system has been made to look prettier, remember it is about the games people, although recent statements from Sony appear to suggest they want to promote it as an enteratinment hub, for me as a gamer that is worrying. I want my games machine to be about games primarily, luckily I have a 360 too which still (contrary to certain idiots) does by far the best job on that score.

Handbags at the ready.....

Yes but it'll be cheaper to get an leite than buy an arcade and a separeate 360 gig HDD. It does look better in Black IMO.

I totally agree with you about ODST. speaking from personal experience i got my 360 as soon as Halo3 came out. Not sure i'm going to bother getting ODST and i am a huge Halo fan.

It's fun to see people yelling from the rafters of MS/Nintendos demise, but theres always a spike in sales after a new SKU is released. It'll eventaully die down a bit but i have afeeling that alot of the people that will buy a slim will already own either a 360 or a wii or both.

there's a marked rise against the competiton becasue they're jitting a sort of equlibirum with sales and the PS3 is playing catch up.

altitude2k on 7 Sep '09
VGChart:

In what is probably the most successful console re-launch in history, around half a million PS3 "slims" were sold last week worldwide according to our preliminary data - this represents over a 400% increase week on week (and a number of retailers in the US had already started selling the new model PS3 last week).

In Europe, some regions saw as much as a tenfold increase in PS3 sales (admittedly, sales had been low the previous week as consumers anticipated the new model launch) - over 200,000 units were sold in "other regions" (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia etc) according to our preliminary data. In Japan, reports have already been independently confirmed from Famitsu magazine of over 150,000 units sold - twice as much as the previous best week for PS3. Sales in Americas also saw a large increase, over 125,000 units according to preliminary data (although this could be higher as more info comes in).

PS3 software also saw significant increases - many PS3 versions of multi-platform titles comfortably outselling their 360 counterparts this week. The big question will be how long can this bump be sustained for.

Stay tuned for more data as it comes in... and please note that this data is still preliminary at this stage. We can say with a fair amount of certainty that between 450,000 and 550,000 units were sold but will not know the exact figure until all of the finalised data is in.

The tide of battle has changed decisively

Also after speaking with a game shop owner, he told me most of the sales he was getting were going to people who already owned a ps3.

Hardware sales mean f**k all. Look at software sales and you will see that sony is failing miserably. Biggest selling sony title to date is still war hawk.

If M$ can corner the online gaming market, i.e. MAKE IT BLOODY FREE then they'll shift a lot of consoles.

Percentages mean nothing, what actually matters is the actual numbers involved.
Sony announced the Slim and price drop a couple of weeks before it came out, so PS3 sales dropped while people waited for the Slim.
MS on the otherhand dropped the Elite price more or less right after the announcement, so there was no need for people to put of buying while they waited.

It's good to see some life in the PS3 sales though.

I've seen a few people say they have, or were considering it. I'm sure that's a very small percentage though. Some people mentioned trading their 60GB launch models, which does seem a little bit crazy.

I did see someone state they were going to replace their PSP with a Go, their PS3 with a slim and buy the new phone that controls the PS3!

If they bought out a 360 that totally eradicated the RRoD, I think you'd see a hell of a lot of existing 360 owners 'upgrading'.

I think that this could be the first generation since the SNES and Megadrive where we have an equal share come the end of the lifecycle. I certainly don't see MS running away with it now the cheaper slims out and i don't see Sony overtaking them by such a significant margin.

Hopefully this will give Microsoft the incentive to Drop the 360 (elites as well) to a more formidable price. A second thing i would suggest is that they think about axing the prices down on Xbox Live if not get rid of paying for it all together.

The main advantage here that Sony have over Microsoft is a FREE online service for the owners to use, for me personally it's a big deal and could be a deciding factor if i get my 360 shipped off to be fixed or buy a PS3 instead.

haha you t**t. I live in Dublin where the price at xmas was €450 for the little big planet package and 2 games of your choice.
I have fortnightly visits across the border where the same package was £300. The exchange rate was 97p at that time so i got it for roughly €309.

So no im glad I got it then to enjoy Ratchet and Clank, Tekken 5 online, Little Big Planet and all the third party games. Only fps i like on it is bioshock because its not a blatant copy of call of duty or halo and I would even say that about Killzone 2

Nintendo may be kicking bottom as you say but its tucked away in a corner not been used the PS3 Dominates in my house!

And in my house console use goes 360>PS3>Wii but that doesnt prove anything. Rolling Eyes

Fact is Nintendo have made a profit on Wii from day one and are outselling all the rest.

Well done Sony but like I wrote in a previous post upon a price drop it is inevitable that more units will sell but the reality is it doesn't really mean anything unless they can sustain the sale over a long period of time...Still a great Slim launch though and will hopefully give MS something to think about and the Wii a big kick up the backside to produce better quality games (that'll last longer than a weeks play!)!

Meh. I'll buy one when SVD's beloved Agent comes out. IF it's as good as it should be. Might pick up Uncharted 1&2 and some BRs as well, but that's really about all I feel I'm missing. I'll keep my 360 for multiplayer, GTA, Halo, Mass Effect and pretty much everything else.

So your not interested in future blockbusters like God of War 3 , Gran Turismo 5, The Guardian and Shenmue 3 (Soon to be confirmed as a Ps3 Exclusive!!)

You don't say! I could never have guessed, as your comments leave no clue to your platform leanings at all! Smile

I'm waiting for The Last Guardian personally, it's got the potential to be the PS3's standout title next year. I can't comment on The Agent, as we've only seen a logo, although I won't doubt Rockstar North's ability to deliver a great title.

Thing is, people wern't buying PS3's because of the hefty price. But with slimer, sleeker PS3 and price drop, it's exaclty what people want.

Firmware 3.0 was the start of huge inmprovement on PS3's online combatabilites.

Games, like Agent and The Last Guardian, are also part of the reason of an surge of new PS3 customers.

Xbox 360, even with a slim one, if it's the same DVD drive, then well...we know stories about that.

And red-ring of death, well,

We might see a surge in Blu-Ray sales as with the machines lowered price point you would imagine many people are buying it as a movie player first and a games machine second. Of course that might change when they start introducing motion based games Wink

I got both machines, but I got a PHAT PS3 a few months ago as at E3 sony did not indicate they were dropping price of PS3 or slimming it, only PS2 price drop. Anyways, I keep the phat PS3 as I swapped Hard drives to a 320GB...but still there is distinct lack of games on the PS3 and new games being released in the furture compared to 360, my preorders are primarliy 360 based as UNCHARTed is the only game for PS3 that interests me...now sony...GAMES for the PS3..can you manage that in ful 1080p instead of the half baked 720p that you keep putting out games out in?

All u fanbois forget that the PS3, a powerful machine still only has mainly 720p games and not many compared to the 360...great marketing with the slim...but people get bored with no games to play on it, new ones especially..so some 1080p games are needed now...LEFT 4 DAED 2 ????oh I ordrrd that for 360 as its not got a PS3 release..and..enuff...just get some games out please?

I'll be looking into getting a PS3 in the next few months, but the only games that interest me are LBP and uncharted at the mo- Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain and Last Guardian are the future contenders.

Oh and Wipeout. Surprised
