BioShock 2 delayed

"The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one," says Take-Two CEO
Take-Two has only gone and delayed the bound-to-be-awesome BioShock 2 from the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2009 into fiscal 2010. Here's the official release.

Update: Reuters is reporting that while the firm didn't specify a new release date, spokesman Alan Lewis said it would be released in the first half of calendar 2010. Update out

Launch of BioShock 2 Now Planned for Fiscal 2010

Conference Call Set for 4:45 pm ET Today
New York, NY - July 13, 2009 - Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today announced revised revenue and earnings guidance for fiscal 2009.

Take-Two is reducing its fiscal 2009 guidance to reflect several factors, most significant of which is the movement of the launch of BioShock 2 from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2010, in order to provide additional development time for the title.

Additionally, Take-Two is updating third uarter and fourth quarter fiscal 2009 guidance to reflect reduced sales of catalog products and lower than anticipated initial retailer orders of new releases, due to a retail environment that is proving even more challenging than the Company's previous expectations.

Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two, stated, "We recognize that our revised outlook for the balance of fiscal year 2009, due to both internal and external factors, is a disappointment. That said, we concluded that moving the release of BioShock 2 into fiscal year 2010 was the right decision for the product.

"We believe the result will be a more compelling consumer experience and a better performing product in the marketplace. At the same time, near term retail conditions have proven to be more challenging for our business than the assumptions built into our prior outlook. We remain confident in the long term potential for Take-Two's business, and our ability to capitalize on that potential through our exceptional creative talent and solid balance sheet."

Ben Feder, Chief Executive Officer of Take-Two, added, "The decision to shift a release date is never an easy one, especially with a product as highly anticipated as BioShock 2. We felt that it was essential to invest the additional time to ensure that this title will deliver what its fans expect and deserve. As a result, we will now be launching sequels to several of our strongest franchises - including BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption - during the next fiscal year. These titles will anchor our lineup for fiscal 2010, and along with other products planned for next year, provide a platform for enhanced financial performance in what we hope will be an improved retail environment."

It's worth pointing out that the release only says fiscal 2010, which starts in November. It could only be delayed a few weeks then. But would you really go out and do the whole 'massive game delayed' thing if it was just a few weeks late? Probably not...

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Damn!

Well, I suppose it didn't want to go up against Modern Warfare 2 and L4D2. Still, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Very disappointing news, although if I'm honest, it's not completely surprising - I felt that the time from announcement to release seemed pretty quick this time, especially given how long we'd known about the first Bioshock before it got released. The recent news of enlisting a 4th developer would also suggest they still had a lot to do on it.

Anyway, hopefully this time will be spent wisely - I'd certainly hate to have the game rushed and come out unfinished just to meet an earlier release date rather than be enjoyable and properly polished. Hopefully the delay won't be too long - just wish they'd given another speculative date (more specific than fiscal 2010), but I'm sure the wait will be worth it. :D

Gutted! Even booked a week off work just to play this game. Delay Modern Warfare 2 instead but not this....No!

Yeah thats pretty much what I was going to say, sure it's annoying but I applaud 2K for delaying it so that they can get the game up to the standards they had originally set for it instead of just rushing it out in time for christmas. Lets just hope they don't apply Gran Turismo levels of polish to it, otherwise we'll be lucky to have it by this time next year :o.

Goddamn it. Was due for release on my birthday aswell :(

If they'd attempted to release this at the same time as L4D2 and MW2, the multiplayer side would've completely failed... I already can't see it competing as it is. With a new version or whatever it is of the kids favourite, Halo, multiplayer Bioshock games will be dead within a couple of weeks from release. They should've worked on co-op instead. As it happens it's just a rent and play once kind of game I think. Buying the original was a waste of money.

MW2 had better be the best ****ing game ever released. It already has other companies terrified of going up against it. It's a shame if people may have been planning on buying more than 1 game over christmas, or even for those not interested in modern warefare at all.

...it looks like the first few months of 2010 will be flooded with AAA titles.......MW2 has scared everyone away.....no GT5, god of war3, alan wake, bioshock2, heavy rain etc...the run into xmas sounds a bit flat now...

I suppose it's better to delay than put something out that's not up to par but as someone already said most titles people really want are all being crammed into the first half of next year by the sounds of it. I think all that's going on this crimbo is Assasins, Uncharted,Halo and MW2? Not bad but not great either. Crist last year I was moaning about too many games at crimbo now not enough, I'm never happy lol!

Bloody gutted. Would you kindly reconsider, Take-2? Surely a savvy reaction to a fiscally disappointing year would be to fall back onto your cushy cash cow in the fourth quarter?

My inner cynic almost wants MW2's release to be delayed now, so that after all this schedule rejigging from other developers, their games have to go up against it anyway. (Obviously said out of pettiness; I certainly don't want to see Bioshock 2 underperform.)

Still, can't be too downhearted, I'm just going to trust that this time is going to be spent to make the game even more SUPER MEGA-AWESOME than its existing form is. It has to be, I don't think my faith in humanity could cope with this game being a disappointment!

Good move 2k at last publishers are starting to see sense.

Its better to delay the launch and put out the game everyone wants than to rush release a disappointing title. Agree it is frustrating, but it's not like there aren't any other good games coming out between now and the then!

Wow, well that really sucks. :(
Posted by AJB123644
Sucks but good as I would rather have a good and polished game late than a crap and buggy game on time. Good stuff 2k!
Posted by Black Mantis
True. To me, the game didn't seem to be coming together well, with the news that they have four development teams working on it. More than enough games for me this year regardless of this delay too!

HA HA HA.
i told yous max payne 3 wouldent be out this year.
but this is getting extremely annoying.
year after year after year we allways get less games than what were promised.
owell as long as assassins creed 2 comes out this year im happy.
if they delay that the world will end.
Posted by BeauBeau
Balls.

We'll probably end up getting Alan Wake first...
Posted by Sinthetic
worst news all year. but i guess it will be more than worth the wait.
uncharted 2, ratchet and clank, bayonetta and assassin's creed 2 will soften the blow.
Posted by milky_joe
The overuse of the term 'fiscal' in that statement merely suggests that this is for purely financial reasons, and nothing at all to do with extra dev time.
Posted by snips10
Delay it as long as you like, just make it right!

With the inevitible pre-christmas roll-out of games in October/November, it'll be nice to pad it out into the new year.
Posted by HotRabbit
I still think it'll be out in time for the festive season. When they said autumn release, I automatically took that for meaning 'holiday period'. Almost everyone cashes in on the pre-holiday crazy rush. Why shove it into the New Year when most people's already stretched resources will be a lot thinner? All part of the hype machine, I bet it's out on December 18th!
Posted by blind_fools
if they say fiscal year 2010.
that means any time after april first 2010.
i hope they hurry up and release mafia 2 though, thats my most anticipated game from 2K.
the first was the best mob game ive ever played and DAM that games old.
Posted by Marlonjb
As long as Batman isn't now delayed I can live.
Posted by HotRabbit
The first release date was 'October/Autumn' and now it's been pushed back. A fiscal year doesn't necessarily have to tie in with the tax year, right? It depends on the individual business. The article suggests theirs ends November, so still hope!
Posted by BeauBeau
You're right, a fiscal year can be whenever you want: I work in a university, and we run from August 1st to end July as our year.

That said, with a major company that uses the term in this sense (ie, in industry-based publicity), I'd be highly surprised if they didn't mean after April 1st. Sorry.

Goddamn the cell processor!

:P

Developers trying to avoid Modern Warfare 2 then!? Trying to be clever with the old profits eh 2k? Good luck with that. One small problem...MASS EFFECT 2!
Posted by JuiKuen
Nothing worth buying on the 360 this years then. And no one say CoD 6!

Well, maybe Tekken 6 if it turns out any good
Posted by smegpot
This news is a bit of a bummer, this is the game i was most looking forward to this year.Oh well have to make do with odst and modern warfare 2.
Posted by HotRabbit
I'd tend to agree, actually. Just being optimistic!
