Sony on PS3 online: "We were late"

But firmware continues to improve PSN and PS Store, says SCE boss
Sony Computer Entertainment's president of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida says he thinks the platform holder was "late" in offering "platform-level" online support for the PS3.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge magazine, which has a big cover feature on the new PS3 Slim, Yoshida said: "I think we were late to offer the platform-level support, to make the online functionality work at that level.

"We made the prior decision that you do not introduce the common centralised network names into every experience, so publishers made their own. That was fine at the start, but as more and more games have online functionality you need a unified approach.

"So Microsoft took that approach in the last generation, and maybe that's where people see the difference when they compare Xbox Live and PSN."

Commenting further on the state of Sony's online offerings, Yoshida said the company's making improvements with the new 3.0 firmware and further centralising the PlayStation Store into the PS3 experience.

On social networking, Yoshida said that SCE "should really continue to look at adding and improving" features on PSN, but didn't rule out looking at integrating existing sites like Facebook. "Something like 300 million people already have accounts on Facebook. Why should we ignore that?"

I think the Facebook Fad has run its course, I wouldn’t bother Sony. I kno lots of people who were really into it six months ago and now never use it.

Does it really matter if they put Facebook on there? You don't have to use it. Just like Home or Games on Demand!
Black Mantis on 3 Sep '09
So where's the cross game voice chat?

It's the biggest missing feature from online multiplayer, it is actively making me buy games on PC instead of PS3 and sitting on TeamSpeak with my mates.

I don't care about home, I don't care about avatars, I want to have fun playing some games with my mates, not sit on the phone trying to get into the same lobby.

Bad luck Sony, keep screwing me and I'll keep screwing you. Razz

It just seems like a waste of development time that could be better placed elsewhere.
I have a Facebook account but I don't even remember the last time I logged in, and I certainly have no interest in using it on a games console. Even Twitter, which I do use daily, I wouldn't want on my consoles.

As davidc said, I want to play games on them. I know Sony is pimping the "centralised entertainment device" thing, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Better late than never!

Keep up the good work Sony!
wombateer on 3 Sep '09
i think lots of people would disagree with you on these boards Shuhei Yoshida, apparently PSN is every bit as good as xbox live according to them.... what would he know tho Laughing

Good to see Sony copying the competition as always. I player would have been anice touch on the latest update though. If i could get the bloody thing to work.

I rate PSN over Live because of 2 important factors ... 1. It can hold a staggering amount of players online 2. Its got an online browser inclusive (BBC iPlayer, YouTube and other vid sites on my TV never looked better!) 3. Its Free!!!!!!!

Facebook is available on PS3 when you go to it and sign in lol, as is Bebo and Twitter. Its all good but I dont really use em anymore.

Live still isn't 30-40 pound a year better contrary to what some people think. But it seems CVG is hell bent on kicking up a stink today. bless em Rolling Eyes

4) online porn.... so I'm told. Confused

Vidzone is a brilliant application. I think Sony should be pushing it a lot more rather than Facebook et al.

They should include a microphone headset with ps3's to get more ppl chatting

I think if they had included one from the box like MS did then it would be a more vocal place rather than being able to hear a pin drop, but to be honest half the time you'd probably just want to speak to friends so i think the next update should concentrate on a decent party system and cross game chat & invites. If they can add these features then MS really will have to do something about the live subs.
ensabahnur on 3 Sep '09
wooo facebook on PS3.. that'd be awesome!
HyperH on 3 Sep '09
There's always one Smile

So it works like this.

In Game:
"Hang on guys, don't start the next round til I've updated my Facebook status."

On Facebook:
Guy is logging on to KZ2 servers - come play wit me!!

Guy is kicking ass in Killzone 2!

Guy is getting yelled at by team Sad

WTF!!1 they kicked me off the server!1 What did I do?
Dajmin on 3 Sep '09
If anyone wants a decent online experience then the PC is the only way to go.

Gears, etc are laggy as f**k on 360, plus the PS3 isn't any better.

The 360/PS3 are a couple of toys compared to the PC.

I genuinely don't get this demand for 'cross game chat'

If i'm playing KZ2, why do I want to talk to my mate whose playing COD? I don't get it....

Wow, you don't want to talk to your friends just because they are playing a different game than you?

facebook is wank. move on.
psn is just fine the way it is, free and classy, with amazing games like shatter.

PSN rocks as is, PS3 has the best first party online games currently. I love that they give their first party games dedicated servers. Resistance 2 60 players awesome! Killzone2 32 players awesome! Little Big Planet online coop and level sharing awesome! Warhawk, probably the best online game this entire generation.

ONLINE DOESNT SELL CONSOLES AND ONLINE DOESNT SELL GAMES

X360 FANS BANG ON ABOUT THIS ZHIT YET ONLY 3 GAMES OUT OF GOD KNOWS HOW MANY ACTUALLY HAVE REGULER ONLINE PLAYERS

HALO/COD ETC MOST X360 ONLINE PLAY IS DEAD NO ONE THERE ONLINE IS GOOD AND ALL I PLAY ONLINE MY SELF BUT ITS OVER RATED AND OVER HYPED IT DOES NOT SELL GAMES AND ISNT USED AS MUCH AS IDIOTS SAY IT IS
101CVGadin on 3 Sep '09
People want cross game Chat because its a pain in the ass to gather people into a lobby on certain games like cod4.

Cross game chat is the most important update for anyone with friends
Mmmmgrolsch on 3 Sep '09
reading the comments -i think Sony are admitting that Microsoft had the right idea by pushing the 'online all the time' aspect of this gen -the xbox 360 was built around Live - its integrated into everything from gamerscore, friendslists, ratings, leaderboards, menu screens the lot - being offlne with a 360 is to really miss out on the point of having one - Sony has in that respect been playing catch up.

So they aren't discussing how many people are playing games online - but how the PS3 is now doing 'an Xbox360' and fully integrating the online services of PSN into the console rather than it being a side option on a menu.

As a 360 owner who sold a PS3 last xmas im now regretting that decision as they FINALLY have a machine thats fully together and a rival on the online domain- took your time though SONY! tut tut
Bristolpeteuk on 3 Sep '09
To be honest, the fact that theres a browser to look for porn with wins me over!

But also, it's a reliable online system once you sign in. I'm on wireless, which is downstairs through a two layer wall, meaning i rarely get a reliable connection. But that's not Sony's fault, its mine

1.) ONLINE DOESNT SELL CONSOLES AND ONLINE DOESNT SELL GAMES

2.) MOST X360 ONLINE PLAY IS DEAD NO ONE THERE ONLINE IS GOOD AND ALL I PLAY ONLINE MY SELF BUT ITS OVER RATED AND OVER HYPED IT DOES NOT SELL GAMES AND ISNT USED AS MUCH AS IDIOTS SAY IT IS

1.) Online definitely helps sell games, can you imagine COD without online play, it's basically all that sells the game now. Co-op is also becoming increasingly important to a lot of players.

2.) most games on any platform have a limited life on or off-line and only the top games in any genre are exceptions.

Personally i prefer XBL at the moment but PSN could surpass it if Sony learn from their slow start. Having proper servers instead of dodgy P2P connections should help significantly.
sleazeboy on 3 Sep '09
@ Starsail.

For the umpteenth time. Facebook and Twitter do not work on PS3. I'm on my PS3 typing this now. You can sign in but not send messages to friends, upload photos, add or delete friends and almost 90% of their features. I like my PS3 but there's little point lying to make it sound better. It has enough good points to make it a worthwhile buy for any real gamer. Is it on par with the X360 in terms of online, no, in my opinion nowhere near.

I like console wars, its good for the consumer. I love my X360 and I really enjoy my PS3. I hope Microsoft and Sony continue to improve things for me.

Facebook works on my PS3 but I have Ubuntu on my PS3 and a 320gig HDD though!

Now your going to say what is Ubuntu, well its a great version of Linux that you can install on your PS3.

If you don't own a pc, like me then those sites hardly work properly with the ps3 internet browser. You can fill out comment boxes(albeit severly limited by the ps3 grey data entry box), but 8 times out of 10 you can action the enter comment icon in these sites. Playfire.com a site dedicated to making ps3 trophy cards, is even worse, which is bizarrely illogical. So if he wants to make ps3 compatible with Book My Face Space.com, instead of French Polishing up the XMB with what amounts to more advertising space for PSN store games, Sony should be extending the Ps3s internet functionality. They constantly fail to walk their talk. For instance Vidzone was guinea pigged here in New Zealand, & we were promised release with the first batch of countries. Well, we're still waiting. At least store cards are finally fingers xxd coming.
