Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has said that the games industry has the potential to "eclipse" the film and television industries.
Kotick believes that the feat could be realised within five years when the next generation of hardware enables developers to master the art of facial animation. This, he said, would bring characters to life and provide an emotional connection allowing for better storytelling and character development.

"I view the medium as having the potential to eclipse film and television," he told Barron's, before noting that all businesses will face economic challenges over the next few years.
"It's not a trivial investment for people," he said of console adoption, speaking shortly after Microsoft and Sony lowered the prices of the PS3 and Xbox 360 to $299 respectively. "Part of my concern over the next couple of years is when you look at an economy that's not growing and you look at all the economic challenges we face, not just for videogames but for all businesses."
Not when games are £55 a piece they can't. And not when you don't release original franchises they can't. Or are Activision going to create the equivalent of soaps than run for 30 years? Emmerdale = Guitar Hero and Coronation Street = Call of Duty. I rate Activision games about as highly as I rate soaps anyway. They could even double and create the replacements to Big Brother and The X Factor, possibly by ripping off Dead Rising and SingStar, respectively.
Yes, cheap sh*t for the uneducated masses, similar to what they do now.
I agree that gaming has the potential to eclipse tv and film for storytelling and general entertainment but first we need to get back to storytelling but instead at the moment all we have is FPS games and I'm getting sick of it.
For me its a case of I'll believe it when I see it but with Final Fantasy due and Heavy Rain maybe it's the start of the story period especially with Unchartered 2 on the way too.
Come on developers flex your brain muscles give us an eye opener.
irongut's right. Kotick's an idiot and so is soulman in the last part of his post. I reckon its gonna be a while before games remtotely get anywhere near movies and TV for storytelling. I don't feel any emotion from a game's storytelling. Especially when most game characters have that 'dead eye' look - blank eyes and no emtion at all in their faces either. This is particular in Western games. The Japanese give their characters some feel to them, whereas I tend to hate watching the zombies in games like Half Life 2 or Halo 3. The Gears characters look a bit more 'real' facially but still suffer from 'dead eye'.
The tech's not going to tbe there for a while. And I certainly wouldn't expect a developer like Activision to deliver anything remotely emotional since all they make is flash in the pan s**t
Err aren’t games like Heavy rain doing things like this already? Just as your games for the console are somewhat limited. There is no denying that CoD is a cut above the rest, but you can keep your plastic peripherals, Thanks!
Is there an award this year in the golden joystick awards for the most annoying CEO? Im sure it would have been won by EA CEO John Riccitiello for the last five years if that were the case however this year Bobby Kock-tick is pushing him to the finishing line. David Jaffe has said he will “shut the f@*k up for the next six months, maybe bobby can for the next six years?
By the way this guy earns $15M a year, give or take 50K. Modern Warfare 2 anyone?
