Full Xbox 360 Facebook/Twitter is Gold-only

Silver members get "free trial period", MS confirms
Full Xbox 360 Facebook and Twitter access is for Xbox Live Gold Members only, with non-paying Silver members receiving a "free trial period" for the functionality, Microsoft has confirmed.

"Facebook and Twitter on Xbox LIVE will be free to Gold members, with a free trial period also available for Silver members," it said in a statement given to CVG.

"Facebook and Twitter on Xbox Live will offer a truly one-of-a-kind social experience, completely optimized for the TV and seamlessly integrated onto your console.

Double edged sword I suppose. It's good they're giving more to gold subscribers, but they're probably alienating the people who refuse to pay for online services even more.

To be honest having facebook might be ok to browse, but I'm not typing with the on screen keyboard.

And I don't know a single person who uses twitter.
ricflair on 28 Aug '09
good old m$, always out to screw their loyal public out of as much money as possaible!!!!
collyboy187 on 28 Aug '09
Fair enough, people paying for gold memberships deserve to get privileges and its just another incentive for silver members to upgrade.

As for the service itself im not that impressed, I use facebook a lot and whilst its a nice feature to have on the xbox I cant think of a time where I would ever use it, my Mac is always close to me and even if it wasnt I cant see myself logging onto the 360 just to check facebook. Besides the layout is awful, i was expecting them to have it more laid out like a web browser, not little XMB boxes which are a nightmare to traverse.

You can use Facebook (Internet browser) on PS3 for free Very Happy

I had a funny feeling you might have said that, I must be getting psychic in my old age.
StonecoldMC on 28 Aug '09
The difference between facebook on the 360 and through the ps3 browser is that it'll be integrated into the 360 experience, like it'll update your facebook when you unlock achievements etc. Im gonna guess last.fm will be just for gold users too, and maybe only in america like netflix.
quain-chi on 28 Aug '09
There's a rumour going round that once they have enough of these features exclusive to gold subscribers, they're going to make playing online free.

Though, it is just a rumour.
ffcoppolla on 28 Aug '09
that looks really bad to be honest. I agree with DAEDALUS79, the boxes are going to be a nightmare to trawl through the crap that everyone writes on facebook. I will stick to using facebook on my mac thank you very much.
Typheous on 28 Aug '09
I can't see how else you could really navigate around the menus when you have to use a joypad. I think you'd have to use a root and branch type system.

But yeah, if I really have to check facebook, I'll do it on my phone in about five seconds.

If the rumour coppolla mentioned is true, they will have to give gold subs ALOT more than stuff you can get for free on pretty much any platform. Perhaps they would have faster and more localised servers for gold members and slower ones for standard? As much as I appreciate the non gaming features, there'd have to be a gaming reason behind it for me to pay!
ricflair on 28 Aug '09
facebook with displayed achievements, as if they are badges of honour of something. how sad is that. as if the non-gaming public want to see your "achievements".

other people have real achievements on theirs.
svd_grasshopper on 28 Aug '09
I don't see the big deal about paying for xbox live its not like it cost alot of money, and its a far better service than PSN as they say you get what you pay for, bar steam which is topnotch and is free.
obscured021 on 28 Aug '09
Microsoft just seem to be laughing at the people who bought a 360. Ha ha, you bought our system, but now have to pay if you want to use it for anything. Bought broadband? Now you have to pay us to use it! Hahaha! All competition gives internet access for free along with wifi etc? Not us, you have to pay! Hahaha!!!

Real achievements?

'OMG i got so wasted lastnight lolz' is not an achievement. Neither is 'its 5am and im up eating ice cream. work in 2 hours woo'. There are some proper sad acts on facebook who think they are cool for doing stuff that might have been cool when they were 13 but not anymore. Most people who play games and have facebook will no doubt have a lot of friends who use facebook and play games (otherwise they'd be a bit of an outsider), so being able to share your achievements and which games you're playing is a decent idea. Personally I won't touch the thing and I'd rather have more game related features, but oh well.
CrispyLog on 28 Aug '09
I reckon making this gold exclusive is good. We pay for it, we should get more luxuries and privelleges. I won't use Facebook and Twitter on my xbox, because my xbox and TV is next to my computer desk so I can easily use both. And typing with the on screen keyboard is a bloody nightmare. But LastFM and Sky Player will be awesome.
Joshinator2008 on 28 Aug '09
Fair enough! More value for my Gold membership. I already get the most accomplished online gaming set up, so you can't complain.

And if it gets even more people on Gold accounts and playing online then even better.
The_Johnson on 28 Aug '09
i wonder if we'll be able to use Last.fm as a custom soundtrack option.
also, the best solution to FB/Xbox woes is get a chatpad! they're awesome and totally under used!
mowglippml on 28 Aug '09
Is it my imagination, or are there a lot of w*nkers visit and post at this place? Maybe it's because I've not been abiut so much that's it's more obvious...
_Marty_ on 28 Aug '09
Why don't MS make an app using both facebook and twitter called twitface to show how much they think of their loyal followers.. Laughing

you can already view peoples achievements on xbl. why the f**k pin them up on facebook for the world of people who dont play games to see?! retarded idea.

Aye but SVD is a tosser who can't understand the concept of friends.

The some reason people on Facebook post their quiz results and games they've played perhaps?

Grow up and accept people have opinions that differ from yours.
ffcoppolla on 28 Aug '09
Maybe achievements will only show up on other 360 Facebook pages.
ricflair on 28 Aug '09
maybe! but its a bit of fun really isn't it. Like most of the stuff that clutters facebook. Turns out i'm 100% welsh and if i was a drink i'd be vodka.

I lived in Wales for a bit, but i can't stand Vodka. much rather have a good stout or Whiskey and water. If there's whiskey and water.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 28 Aug '09
for f**ks sake, are they trying to make me buy a ps3? they're just full of good news this week arent they?

Facebook, twitter and last.fm are all free on the net, so of course i'll pay for them with reduced functionality on my xbox. cos im an absolute nonce!
Obscure_Metaphor on 28 Aug '09
Can someone explain why you'd use this on the 360 rather than a PC/Mac. Yeah so its built into the 360 experience, will it make any difference to it.........no!

I still say WTF! Msoft sound like they are trying to justify charging for gold membership, ie 'look at all the stuff we bring you, isn't it great, thats why you have to pay'.
But its nothing to get excited about it when I can look at it for free on my lap top, or dare I say it a PS3
budobear on 28 Aug '09
It's because they are money grabbing t***s, and whoever mentioned sky player you obviously don't know that its a pay per view service, even if you have gold your still gonna fork out cash for it. PC ftw.
Shaunyboy12 on 28 Aug '09
I still do not understand the point of 'Twitter'.

What a load of crap for the mindless and idle sheep
sweatyBallacks? on 28 Aug '09
People keep saying they're free on PS3. I'm on my PS3 now with my Facebook open, you can't upload photos, you can't add friends, browsing for friends is almost impossible and most other services cannot be used or clicked in most cases. Same for twitter. I'm not sure what the X360 version will offer but just wanted to debug this myth that Facebook and Twitter work perfectly and free on the PS3. They don't.
Drusus on 28 Aug '09
f**k MS
ruley1979 on 28 Aug '09
I don't see the point of facebook on a console might aswell go on a laptop or whatever all it will do is sap more time away from playin games!
Rens11 on 28 Aug '09
If you already have sky subs then sky player should be free on the 360. if it isnt, then they're shooting themselves in the foot. But many people already have Gold accounts ne way, so these features are just added bonuses. I for one am looking forwadr to this.
KGB7777 on 28 Aug '09
Personally I think this is a really stupid idea and if I want to view my Facebook I will simply go to my P.C and have a look. I bought my 360 GAMES CONSOLE to actually(would you believe it?)play games. I hope there is a way to disable this daft feature.
sonic_uk on 28 Aug '09
I think its fine this service only being for gold members. MS are doing something fun with Facebook and twitter which should work well with the NXE.

They are putting the effort in to do something different with it, so good luck to them.
only_777 on 28 Aug '09
The only service i'd consider paying for to help me be friendly with people is Bar service! hic

Not interested... hurry up and get the football on!

That would be pretty cool. Like say in GTA IV you could be listening to real life radio instead of listening to the in-game radio Smile (not that the in-game radio is bad, but I'm sure everyone's heard the whole thing plenty of times over now).
dark_gamer on 29 Aug '09
Microsoft in 'milk the popular socialising website' to get more gold subscribers shocker.

Ah well. At least the £20 120gb hdd's don't cost £100 from Microsoft.
