MS explains Arcade price hike

Price increase to "offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market conditions"
Microsoft has told CVG that the rise in the price of the basic Xbox 360 Arcade unit from £129.99 to £159.99 is to "offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market conditions".

"We have not made upward adjustments to the trade price of consoles before. A modest increase on the trade price of Xbox 360 Arcade consoles in EMEA allows us to offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market conditions while still offering the most affordable console on the market," MS told us.

"Xbox 360 remains the most affordable console in the market and offers a great value entry point into a fantastic range of entertainment experiences available on Xbox 360 now and in the future like Zune Video Marketplace, Facebook, Twitter, Avatar Marketplace and of course Project Natal which will be compatible with all Xbox 360 consoles."

MS this morning confirmed details of a price drop for the Elite console, which will sit at £199.99 down from £229.99.

BS, Microsoft. It's to cover the price drop on the Elite and you know it.
lordirongut on 27 Aug '09
Oh, FFS....like 8 threads currently running about this weren't enough.

Let's have a contest. Let's see how many times the words "blu-ray", "wireless", Free online", "no games", "Xbox live", "Exclusives", "ROFL", "Halo 3", "HDMI", "expensive", "batteries", "pay" and "Xbot" crop up in this thread.
nottsville on 27 Aug '09
but surely since a £30 price increase AND decrease is happening, that is an irrelevant factor. The real change that is being missed is the removal of the hdmi cable, and the arcade games. that where the money is being saved, and the price re-adjustments are just an excuse for a press release in the face of the PS3 becoming good value for the first time since release.
Obscure_Metaphor on 27 Aug '09
Translation: We want to continue to make as much money as possible. Don't sugar coat the truth of the matter with the convient excuse of the economy.
Anyone with half a brain can see what's going on.
NazAareth on 27 Aug '09
as i just posted on major nelsons site(he has just posted about the price drops)....the arcade version that's going up by 30 quid is being brought out without cables and arcade games also, isn't it?

EDIT:sorry, just read your other 360 price news, says it in there
metallicorphan on 27 Aug '09
Maybe the elite was always overpriced, and maybe they have been making a loss on the arcade?
Hobophobik on 27 Aug '09
Something I haven't seen in any of the arcade/elite 'news' items is whether or not they are bundling the HDD with the new arcade? Just asking.
minignaz on 27 Aug '09
The ps3 has always been better value. Having bought 2 different 360 models and replaced each one twice I will be turning my back on the 360 for good once my current elite claps out. I dont get how people love MS this gen when all they do is take the p**s out of you ,I don't think I want to know but not even a Gears of War 3 can tempt me back at this point my 360 hasn't been used since bf1943 came out. But the ps3 gets fired up at least once a day.
gogo65uk on 27 Aug '09
i still think Microsoft made a big mistake in not releasing every Xbox with a harddrive. Would give them so much more flexibility.
blynk on 27 Aug '09
It can be seen as a smart move as they are trying to get people online for DLC and other features. £40 extra for the 120HD will mean alot of people will buy the Elite due to it offering better value for just a little more. (thats not in comparison to other consoles but to the Arcade so back off willy swingers)

I think the arcade is there now just to fill the marketing gap for 'cheapest' console.
DrRickDagless MD on 27 Aug '09
Well well, after all the complaining about a possible Wii price increase Ms has gone and done it! While you could possibly believe Nintendo about the exchange rate (they only have one model to price reference) MS story just sounds utter BS. If there they needed to increase the price due to exchange rates etc. why only the arcade? Plus removing the free xbla games it came with is really kicking the consumer when they are down. Personally i can't understand why they didn't phase out the arcade and put the pro model at £159.99 then it would of made sense (especially with all the new features that ideally need a Hard drive.) Something in all this doesn't add up?
Osiris25 on 27 Aug '09

I think the arcade is there now just to fill the marketing gap for 'cheapest' console.

You're probably on to something there.

I don't think MS have actually thought all this one through. Smells a bit like a "knee" jerk reaction to me.
nottsville on 27 Aug '09
If there they needed to increase the price due to exchange rates etc. why only the arcade?

Exactly.
nottsville on 27 Aug '09
boll*cks. smoke and mirrors illusions. what MS are best at.

they have cut the price too much already and need to backtrack to make profit. but want look like they offer better value than the ps3 slim. which they dont.
svd_grasshopper on 27 Aug '09
This article and all the inevitable fanboy b******s is completely irrelevant as only a complete simpleton would buy a console without a HDD drive anyway, and thus deserve to be charged more for services to muppetry.
blueblade on 27 Aug '09
I can't see the Arcade being around much longer either, they're obviously rising the price of it to sway people towards the more expensive Elite. Who in their right mind would buy an Arcade now?.
flash501 on 27 Aug '09
do they sell the arcade in sterling and the elite in monopoly money rate flucuations cant change costs in opposite directions obviously the elite was selling at more of a premium cos they rip off customers by including extra's eg 120gb HD which probably only costs them a tenner to make!
Rens11 on 27 Aug '09
To all the fanboys, please use proper grammer!
For the sake of the forum, I beg you, please you proper grammer.

"I can't see the Arcade being around much longer either, they're obviously rising the price of it to sway people towards the more expensive Elite. Who in their right mind would buy an Arcade now?."

I have to agree with this the Arcade no represents poor value it should really be priced at £99.95p that way it'd be in the 'impulse purchase' realms.

Raising the price in the current climate will really annoy/anger consumers and that'll do no good for MS.

Better now to by a Pro before it becomes history or get an elite for £40 more.

Management speak at work. Its a good way to read a paragraph and not understand what was written.
Speciala on 27 Aug '09
They could have thrown in an extra controller for the arcade version, marketing something towards the family and then only having 1 controller is a bitch.
Mr S0L0 D0L0 on 27 Aug '09
Now that the Elite is less than 200 quid they should just drop the arcade altogether.
ted1138 on 27 Aug '09

Would it not be more productive to ask them to use proper grammar? Razz
zodyack on 27 Aug '09
As much as the idiots and fanboys would like to be outraged by this.

The Uk is the only territory thats getting an increase in the price of the Arcade. everywhere else is just getting a price cut to the elite (which we are getting too), don't see how the consumers of our fair isle are going to offset the decrease of the rest of the world.

Nintendo earlier this year also upped the trade price of the wii for the exact same reason. If you want someone to be mad at i'd suggest the banks for buying do much bad debt off america and the papers for convincing you feeble minded cattle that you should stop spending cash thus slowing the accomy further.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 27 Aug '09
I say b*****ks! So if that is the case regarding fluctuations and the weak pound blah blah blah why haven't they 'adjusted' the price of the Elite and increased it's price to 260 quid then? Pull the other on MS!
ei8hty5ive on 27 Aug '09

I think the arcade is there now just to fill the marketing gap for 'cheapest' console.

That's probably one reason. Unfortunatley another reason is probably to offer a basic set up for those whose existing 360's have red ringed and are now outside the 3 year warranty. Mad
shadowsblaze on 27 Aug '09
Did he REALLY say the 360 is the most affordable console?
liquidsoap89 on 27 Aug '09
What a bunch of C**KS MS are. Put the price of a faulty machine great idea. Lucky mine was free unless I would not bother with MS. Laughing

About typing:

Everybody makes a typo once in a while.
I guess that most of the time it's not on purpose nor is it because that person is stupid beyond comprehension.
Now, I know that most of you (the sane ones) agree with me on this, even if you won't admit it.

So who's the moron:
The person making a typo (but at least are trying to get a message out)
or
the person that HAS to go "haha you made a typo then you must be stupid and hence I must be smart because I discovered the typo and commented on it"

SO PATHETIC!
You really have to boost your own selfesteem by pointing out other peoples mistakes.
Well, then your selfesteem must be very low.

When I read a typo, (unless it's totally jiberish) I assume it wasn't made deliberately to p**s me off nor because that person is stupid as f*ck.
I just read the damn post. How hard is that.

Also please bear in mind, that the internet (and therefore this site as well) is WORLD WIDE.

You DO know what that means , right?

I'm from Denmark for example.
Not everybody has english as their native language.
You (yes, you the idiots, you know who you are)know that as well, so what's wrong with you?

In Denmark we say 'don't throw stones if you live in a green house.

That, my dear idiots, is excactly what you're doing.
So grow up please.

"For the sake of this forum....", please grow up.

Phew, glad you added that last bit, I thought you were venting your spleen at me then Wink

I agree with most of what you've said. There are loads of grammar mistakes on here each and every day (a common one being Xbox's instead of Xboxes) but like you say - does it really matter in the overall scheme of things?

But hoping and praying for people to improve their "grammer" was just too much and had to warrant a comment Wink

Also - a good point about the worldwide thing.

On topic though, this story even reached Radio 1's "Newsbeat" section on my drive home tonight. Although I had to smile because the reporter was talking about "Xbox's price drop" compared to "Sony's Playstation 3", as though Xbox was the manufacturer and Microsoft didn't come in to it.

They even began the story with something along the lines of "Xbox have today announced a price reduction for their console".

Amazes me how games-related news coverage still has some kind of childish theme associated with it, as though the reports are based on some alien thing of which they have no real understanding...

The UK might be the only region getting an Arcade price rise but it's also getting the smallest Elite price drop. $100 doesn't equal £30. To claim the Arcade is going up in price because of the strenght of a £ while dropping the price of another product priced in the same £ is nothing short of a lie. Will the Arcade price come down again as the £ gains strength? I seriously doubt it. Nothing to do with the accomy Confused
