Unveiled at the company's fourth BlizzCon event, World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm will introduce new playable races, zones and quests, refresh existing areas of the title and raise the level cap to 85, among other new features.
"In addition to revitalising some of the most familiar and iconic areas of the game world, this third World Of Warcraft expansion will add new features and a large amount of new content for players to explore," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're excited to be offering a first glimpse of Cataclysm for attendees of BlizzCon, and we look forward to sharing more information with everyone as development progresses."

Having launched in November 2004, World Of Warcraft's subscriber base topped 11.5 million as of December 2008. The franchise is thought to have accounted for about half of publisher Activision Blizzard's earnings during fiscal 2009, having claimed a reported 58 per cent share of the western subscription-based MMO market.
In July it was revealed that a live action movie based on the World Of Warcraft universe is to be helmed by Spider-Man trilogy and The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, while last week it was announced that Future had partnered with Blizzard to publish World Of Warcraft: The Magazine, a new quarterly subscription-only title set to debut this fall.
More information about the Cataclysm expansion pack can be found on the World Of Warcraft website.
This expansion is more geared towards levels 1-60 in fairness, they are re-designing the levelling experience and old zones. There are very few new things for level 80's in this one, which is why the cap only raises to 85.

I don't know, a couple of new zones, a couple more heroic raids and flight in Azeroth. The re-design of Azeroth is no doubt also to keep the old players interested (though that may be trying to make them interested in levelling up again). I think this expansion is really geared to everyone. There has to be a lot of level 80's out there that will be willing to level more characters up again in a new Azeroth.
Probably the single most exciting thing they could have announced at Blizzcon.
It's an absolutely mammoth undertaking, but then if anyone has the resources to manage it, it's the company receiving one hundred million pounds a month in subs.
I think though the question here is why do we have to pay extra money just so we can start levelling more interestingly again? I played last year until level 23 and was bored out of my head as a human paladin. Everything was grinding and everywhere was empty. Will this reinvigorate the earlier places? Quite possibly but who knows. I think it will depend how they launch it. Will you actually need to buy the expansion to see everything change or what not?
Q: Will I need the expansion to be able to experience the Cataclysm changes?
A: When the Cataclysm occurs, it will occur for all players, whether they have purchased the expansion or not--you will no longer be able to play in the original version of Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms. However, certain features such as the new zones, new races, and new level cap will only be accessible to players who purchase the expansion.
