Peter Moore's Parting Shot

Moore's last word as Xbox boss
When Next Gen met face-to-face with Peter Moore just a few days ago, it didn't realise he'd be going software-only. In one of his last interviews as a Microsoft exec, he talks defects, missing forecasts, the supposed PS3 non-price-cut and much more...

At E3, Xbox boss Moore was in it with Microsoft for the long haul. Today we know that he's going to head up EA Sports beginning in September.

Regardless, Moore has been the face of Microsoft's gaming business, and he has plenty to talk about. For instance, Microsoft had just announced that it earmarked around $1 billion for repairs of the dreaded three-red-light error on Xbox 360s. Scores of upset customers eventually led to Microsoft's decision to up the Xbox warranty and offer repairs for free.

"'A billion dollars' is not an easy thing to say," Moore says. Regardless of the linguistic difficulty, the number slipped right off his tongue, partly thanks to Microsoft's deep pockets. "I think [the new policy is] going to help us in the long run and put a lot more confidence behind the product."

What about those elusive failure rates? You'd think that once Microsoft got that difficult number out of its collective mouth (One. Billion.), any other figures would be expelled with relative ease. But no one has been able to get an official, printable figure on how many Xbox 360s have bit the dust due to the reported design issues.

Moore insists that the billion-dollar figure is "all that we should worry about."

"We're not going to say to the world what issues we have." He's quick to point out that Sony and Nintendo also change and upgrade the innards of their consoles, albeit much more under the radar. He refuses to comment on the issue, as expected.

No word on design changes to the Xbox 360 hardware, either. Moore finds no reason to go "full open kimono on this stuff." What we do know is that Microsoft found that failures were caused by a design issue, not a manufacturing issue, and the company had to "engineer around" the problem. Our curiosity continues, and according to Moore, is apparently unwarranted.

Microsoft recently announced that it had fallen slightly short of its fiscal 2007 Xbox 360 shipment goal-11.6 million vs. 12 million. Moore claims that people are "making a little bit more of a big deal than it really is," calling forecasting an "inexact science."

"In our lives we say we're going to be in a certain place a year from now in a lot of stuff- weight, fitness, quality of marriage-and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't."

Despite the inexact nature of forecasts, there is one prediction that he is sticking to, and that is that the Xbox business will sustain profitability throughout all of fiscal 2008. "We're going to do that this year," he says.

For those who have forgotten, Microsoft gaming also includes the PC platform. Although Vista as a gaming platform has improved a bit since its launch earlier this year, it is still trying to get off the ground as a full-on vehicle for Moore's proclaimed "PC gaming Renaissance."

That will come in time. The really exciting games that use Vista's exclusive DirectX 10 are looking exceedingly sharp from a graphics standpoint. Crysis, Gears of War and Age of Conan are a few DX10 games that we're looking forward to.

But it's going to take more than a few big games and one flat year of revenue to convince Moore that PC gaming is back to its full fighting strength.

"I am very worried about the health of the PC gaming business. If I take the MMOs out of it, we're still seeing a year-on-year decline for the last five years for packaged goods in the PC world.... Microsoft's going to stand up and say look, we're going to take care of this on our own dime."

Microsoft is continuing its push for PC gaming using the Games for Windows branding as PC gaming's "seal of approval."

They are seeing a decline in PC game sales because it costs so damned much these days to play at the high end of gaming (and lets face it who wants to play on medium/low settings?)...I badly want Crysis but at this point in time I cannot justify spending a grand on a new PC, and I don't see the point in playing it on low settings, so I'll stick with my 360 for now.

As a PC gamer primarily its been a tough decision to take.

I dunno man.. I love PC gaming atm.

Admittedly I did buy a new PC 6 months ago, and will upgrade to a DX 10 card in the next month, but game-wise, it probably the most exciting platform in my eyes.

I liked PC gamimg back in the day, but when graphics cards started costing as much as a new console, I shovelled the idea!

I prefer the PC as a gaming platform as it's always been a more versatile piece of hardware. It's a one stop shop where I cant do everything I want in one case.

If hardware prices were more affordable for new upgrades then maybe there wouldn't be so many PC to Console defections. However, if M$oft brought out an official mouse and keyboard for the Xbox, I probably would consider buying one as for me there's nothing worse that the current controllers.

I still play games on the PC as there are some games only work well on a PC, Football Manager for instance, I dont care what anyone says, it's a PC game and is useless on a Console. Same goes for the likes of Civ 4 (Roll on the expansion!!), its going to be total garbage on a console, that, once again is a PC game, I cant even imagine trying to play that game with a controller.

I'll still be playing PC games until the end of time......along with me 360 :D

PC gaming has been in decline for ALONG time now. In that time space console gaming has evolved and has gotten rid of the 'games are for kids or geeks' image and made gaming more mainstream. PC gaming is seen as a gaming zone for 'geeks' or how they prefer to be called, 'elitests'. I don't mean to offend anyone but thats the truth...
PC gaming only really consists of FPS, RTS and MMORPG. With PC you only really get 2-3 decent games a year. All this doesn't help justify the fact you constantly need to throw money at your PC in order to keep up.

nobody needs to spend a grand on a PC set up, total myth !!!! - you can get a perfectly capable set up for less.

add up a PS3 and HD screen and tell me PC gaming is too expensive.
Its not cheap, as a 360 I grant you, but, its generally the best platform for top performance.
I enjoy cutting edge gaming with my 160 quid graphics card (8800GTS 320MB oc). in fact, I upgraded to 2 gigs of mem, nice dual core with mainboard and this very card for just a smidgen over the price of a PS3.

I enjoyed my days of being an Xbox gamer, it was nice to buy a game and not worry if it would run I suppose.
But you cant really get off on console hardware like you can with the latest whizz-bang turbo nutter ******* PC kit can you.
Where is the fun in spouting off the spec of your beloved 360 console to your mate...who has exactly the same spec ( perhaps his actualy still works though ).

Lots of PC gamers just love the flexibility and possibility to tinker with your hardware.
When I can whip the case of a ps3 and give it a memory boost, or a bigger heatsink to allow me to ramp up the CPU voltage, or add a second graphics card to double my performance.. I might be intersted...until then, its about as as exciting as a refridgerator.

What the f*ck are you talking about? You are so wrong. There are definitely more decent games released on PC each year than on any console. So you are wrong there.

And saying that the PC game library is limited to three genres is absolutely ludicrous - the depth of game genre's on PC is a mile deep, lest you forget the PC as a gaming platform has been around for decades.

Also, there are literally thousands of decent games you can play on PC that do not require an expensive set up. Games like Crysis, which require a powerful system, are a tiny minority of the PC games library, unless you think along the lines of 'everything that is newest is better'

PC gaming is close to my heart so silly comments like that annoy the hell out of me.

Dude PC gaming is a dieing genre face facts cos they are all right it just costs too much to play games when u compare to console gaming! Cos say u buy a kick ass PC now! in 2-3 years u will be having to up-grade to play games with a similar (but still lower grade) level of detail compared to when u 1st bought it & continuely manually having to updating drivers then anti-viruse software in-order to play multiplayer! Now compare that to a once off purchase of a console that lasts 5-6 years & game detail just gets better not worse & all firmware updates are automatic!

Yes PC's have been round for ages but they only dominate in FPS, RTS, MMORPG & simulators. Also i cant even play old games from 3-4 years ago cos they dont get along with my cpu & g/card & its a real mission to get them working! PC gaming isn't a simple mans platform & requires a high level (higher than average gamer) of tech know how & all the stuff that we fiddle with to get our games working at top form! Consoles are just on the up & up compared to complex pc gameing!

Funny thing this what I hear from console gamers.

"you'll have to pay out every day/week/month/year to keep on top of PC gaming it'll cost a squillion quid".

If game development is being pushed that much then what makes you think your console (which is based on old tech) is going to be pushing these games to the max next year?

Yep !
I wont be lashing anymore cash on my PC for ages - and I wont need to. Its a wrong assumtion to say its essential every year or you cant play current games.
My rig will handle the crysis engine and the doom3 and new unreal engine. so that tells me its not going to be redundant for a good while yet.
when it need a boost I can shove some new gear in it - upgrades...love em. consoles cant do that.
