Wii Sports Resort smashes one million

Over one million copies sold in one month
It's not a pack-in game like its predecessor, but it matters not - Wii Sports Resort has blistered past the one million sales point in Europe.

Released on 24 July and sitting comfy in the number one spot on the UK charts, Resort was designed to show off the motion-sensing magic of Nintendo's newfangled Wii MotionPlus peripheral.

Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of Marketing & PR for Nintendo of Europe, said: "The early sales figures represent a strong start for Wii Sports Resort, which is on its way to becoming another Nintendo title that sells steadily over an extended period of time as opposed to a single flash on its launch day.

"Combined with strong figures for Wii MotionPlus, the data suggests that more families and friends are playing together than ever before - which, for Nintendo, is a major objective."

I nice little achievement for Nintendo that was bound to happen. Wii owners needed to buy the next novel add-on so they could dust off their console and get another 2 weeks of enjoyment out of it. Which was exactly my experience when I went to a friend's house.

The Motionplus only makes a small margin of difference and the bigger variety of games get boring after 5 mins. It didn't take long for the novelty to wear off and for us to get bored before going back to spending the rest of the eveving playing Pro Evo and Fight Night.

It sold a million pretty damn fast but quantity doesn't always mean quality. It is the video game equivalent of High School Musical. It might have made a killing at the box office, but it's absolutely rubbish and only is loved by 6 year olds, your girlfriend and your mother.

Well, when lil Jimmy and Uncle Max finally get borred of there Wiis, I believe Nintendo are in trouble becasue i'm pretty sure all their hardcore fans must have left them by now, like I did about a year ago.
wiikii007 on 25 Aug '09
@ Squall5005

Even if what you said is true about there not being much difference, I'm sure that'll change when future titles come out which will hopefully utilize it better such as Red Steel 2, No More Heroes 2, possibly Zelda and maybe even a Star Wars game to say a few.

OK, I'll bite. You are bang wrong. Try playing it for more than a few minutes and one more than one game. Granted, some of the WSR games don't seem to take advantage of it.

And Nintendo aren't and will not be in trouble. They've made more money as a publisher than Sony and MS put together this gen. Have they made some bad decisions, without doubt but they only left the 'hardcore' fans behind for what, nine months?

WSR is a great game. It's not there to give you a deep single player experience.

I agree fully.

The Wii/Nintendo fanboys will be up in arms about this comment but it's true. The novelty factor wears so thin so quickly for this machine and because of all the hype surrounding it (In which I admit I was dragged into myself) I feel this console has disapointed me the most. Even more so than the Gamecube before it (Because I wasn't expecting as much from it, I wasn't as let down as much).

Most the games I have on the Wii, roughly about 16, haven't played more that 6hrs on and that's including Zelda, Smash Bros, Punchout, Madworld and Metroid. The only exceptions are Mario Kart, Galaxy and Wii sports (Which I still play occasionally). That's why I have stopped buying for the Wii...Not even bought Wii resort!
ei8hty5ive on 25 Aug '09
I admit it's early days for the motionplus and I hope developers do take advantage and use it to it's fullest and come out with some good new ideas for it. Wii Sports Resort didn't impress me and I didn't think the 1:1 tracking made the game any more enjoyable than the original Wii Sports. It seemed rushed and they didn't put alot of thought into the variety of games available. But the Wii rarely impresses me and I don't think I'll be forking out for one any time in the near future.
Unless Nintendo provide me with some full meaty games I can really sink my teeth into, rather than the light frothy casual games that line the shelves everywhere, I won't be investing any time soon.
I'm not going to start a rant about casual gaming but I do usually look for a 'deep single player experience' (as ricflair has put it) when I'm handing over £35 for a game. The Wii mainly seems to provide us with novel games that involve the same old remote waggling and I'm pretty bored of it. I attend regular gatherings at a friend's house and his Wii is rarely used by us. We recently tried the motionplus with Resort and the novelty wore off quite quickly, just like the regular Wii remote did. I'm sorry that it offends some of you Wii fans but it's just not something that keeps me entertained.

It just feels more like a boardgame than a console. It's fun to play at Christmas with your family and your tipsy Nan, then you put it in a cupboard until the next special occasion.

I might've exaggerated with the '5 minute' comment but I didn't feel that many of the games were very special or even deserved to have 1:1 tracking. The island flyover was ok and the sword fighting was probably the most fun, but like I've already said, it seemed rushed and little thought has been put into the game's ideas. And the cycling game on there is just ridiculous.

There's going to be tonnes of below average games coming out next year for the Wii with 'USES MOTIONPLUS!!!' stamped all over them and you already know people are going to buying them before even looking at what the game is actually about.
Zelda will be great with or without motionplus and Red Steel 2 might be interesting, but you already know how they're going to use the Wii remote for these titles. Swordfighting and Archery. Sound familiar??

*Takes out fishing rod and waits*

You may have cast your line out, but there aren't many fish biting are there? Well, apart from a couple of your fellow recognized Wii-haters.

Perhaps we're all too busy enjoying one of the most fun and socially inclusive multiplayers in years?

If I were you, I'd quit fishing and go back to your little darkened room to shoot things whilst swearing into a headset.
carterlink on 26 Aug '09
Why would anyone take the word of someone who's moniker is Squall seriously. You've named yourself after the most socially retarded and whiny game character ever invented. Pretty much sums your posts up too.

Looking forward to seeing you gush when Sony's motion controller comes out, telling us how awesome it is.

I've been consistantly playing Wii sports resort since it came out. Its great for short gaming sessions, and the sword fighting and Ping pong rock.

The level of control is above and beyond what it was on just the normal controller. Waggle is finally dead.

really looking forward to seeing Red Steel 2 and what miyamoto does with it for the new zelda.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 26 Aug '09
Good call on the Squall character. Man, he was the suckiest sucker that ever sucked. Not the guy who put wrote the post... the game character... yeah.

As for WSR, well done Nintendo... I guess, not interested in this kind of stuff personally, but as long as there are folk enjoying it, then what's the problem?

(I fully expect a U-turn from the Sony boys when 'the Dildo' is released- lol)
MrPirtniw on 26 Aug '09
Just recently got it for my birthday and I was really surprised by the difference the 1:1 tracking actually makes. I honestly was not expecting this big a difference.

In some of the finer control games (sky diving, and flying), you can really see how even the slightest movement is translated perfectly to the game. Kudos to Nintendo for finally making good on their promises. Better late than never, afterall. Wink

Yes, Resort is basically a glorified tech demo, showcasing some of the things you can do with the new controls, but after sword fighting for more hours then I care to imagine. I now can't wait to try this baby out when the likes of Red Steel 2 and Zelda finally come out.

Ganandorf will never know what hit him! Cool
SuperCinos on 26 Aug '09
Impressive figures. Also noted that it is a standalone game that does not come with the console. It's bloody fun though! Smile
kimoak on 26 Aug '09
read on kotaku. Its also broke a million in Japan and the US as well. Not bad going for only being out for a month.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 26 Aug '09
Seriously, the difference in the level of control between a Wii remote without motionplus and one with motionplus is staggering.

I can only surmise that someone who doesn't see that difference hasn't actually bothered to try both and is doing a bit of amateur trolling.

Little hint chaps, trolling is only effective when it's based on truth, so basing it on a fallacy just looks pathetic...
milky_joe on 26 Aug '09
It just get's on my nerves when people state opinion as fact. Just because it doesn't give YOU what YOU want, it must be useless? It's just a lame attitude to have in general.

If someone doesn't like the premise of the wii remote, m+ isn't going to change that.

It's not for everyone. Nintendo set out to approach things differently this gen, and they haven't really made any secret about that.

I'd take the hours and hours of multiplayer fun in WSR over a single player campaign that lasts ten hours anyday! Although I would argue there aren't enough simultaneous 4 player games on it.
ricflair on 26 Aug '09
i think it was a good route to make the simlutaneous games 2 player rather than 4 was a good idea. The likelyhood of someone having 2 remotes with M+ is more likely (currently at least) than 4. In time this'll obviously change as more games come out with it packed in.

there was only one game in the original that required you to have 4 remotes for fullmultiplayer on the original and that was tennis.

Ooh...I caught me some nice juicy ones.

It makes me laugh that I'm being critised for my name, rather than my actual views on the Motionplus and the Wii. Definitely ruffled the feathers of a few prepubescent Wii owners I see.

I stand by what I said, Nintendo certainly know how to make money fast and provide a gaming experience for all the family, and that's good for them. 1:1 tracking should've been included when the Wii first came out and it makes me laugh that you suckers are happily forking out extra cash for something I'm sure alot of you people expected out of the Wii in the firts place.

I've expressed my option on the matter, having experienced motionplus and Wii Sports Resort and I'm only sharing my opinion, and if you Nintendo fanboys don't like it, I couldn't care less. It's impossible to make everyone agree with what I'm saying and I couldn't care less if I've annoyed anybody. Taking the pi$$ out of my name just makes me laugh at how pathetic some people can be. You can't have a bit of a laugh, and express your views on these forums without being classed as a fanboy or a hater and having all the 9 year olds that retorting with lame insults. That's why I cast my fishing line and that's why I got exactly the reposse I expected.

And for the record I couldn't care less about Project Natal or Sony's motion tech either. They obviously just want a peice of Nintendo's pie and I don't blame them. Easy money. But I do expect them to put the technology to better use than Nintendo, with having more powerful consoles. But we'll just have to wait and see. waht they do with it. Sony and Microsoft's tech demo's just did not impress me.

Lastly I'd like to thank carterlink for posting an utterly retarded reply. You tell me to stop fishing because no one has taken the bait but you go and take a bite anyway. Haha.

And I never said I hated the Wii you moron. If it wasn't every 6 months I had to wait for a decent game to come out for it I would've probably invested already. For no I'm quite happy to have a little go of a friend's because it's not something that could keep me enetertained for a whole evening. It's not worth the money for a handful of good games and an overabundance of less than average ones. I'm always up for trying new Wii games whenever my mate gets one, but I quickly lose interest, they always feel like a Wii game I've already played. The motionplus didnt feel special enough and the only fun I had was playing the swordfighting. I'm not a Wii-hater, that's just the way it is. I can't force myself to like something. The games don't impress me and unless Nintendo have some good ideas for the motionplus I'm sure some people are gonna get bored with their Wii's. And isn't the Wii the most underused console anyway? I'm sure it's been mentioned on CVG and here's some evidence to back that statement up anyway.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/08/neilsen-report-ranks-gaming-usage-for-wii-ps3-and-xbox-360-con/

I don't know what gave you the idea that I swear down a headset in a darkend room, but I would expect a stereotypically comment like that from someone that gets easily offended when someone says anything negative against the Wii. If you must know, I prefer to do my multiplayer gaming with actual friends with a couple of beers. Something you'll be able to buy in about 5 years.

So yeah..I'm not impressed with the novetly of jumping around or waving a phallical device. That goes for Sony and Microsoft too. None of you annoyed Wii lovers are going to change my mind by making fun of my username or the consoles I do enjoy playing and I couldn't care less what you think. Wink

considering the length of squalls post i'd say his feathers were ruffled way more than the people that actaully bothered to have some quality time using motion+

If you buy it with Sports resort or Tiger Woods than it costs nothing extra.

Considering how you rant on about the PS3 its hilarious that you bash the wiis motion tech. considering how pitiful tilt control can be. there are a few noteworthy exceptions. Folklore and heavenly sword spring to mind. but on the whole it was a half bottomd attempt.

And the having to wait 6 months for a decent game argument is bulls**t. I have more games for my wii than my PS3 and 360 combined.

You have more Wii games then your PS3 and your 360 combined because the Wii games get borring a lot quiker, therefore you need to keep buying more Rolling Eyes.

Frickin' 'ell, I touched a raw nerve with you didn't I?!! - Calm down dear. Your feathers truly are ruffled.

For what it's worth, I happen to be thirty six and well above the legal age for drinking. - How you've got the bloody cheek to call others immature when you continue with your stupid fishing analogy is beyond me.

My stereotypical comment was no more wrong or worse than your lot proclaiming that all Wii owners are either little girls or sixty-five year old grandmothers.

If you take great enjoyment out of fishing for fanboys, then I would suggest that it's you who needs to grow up.
